OBJECTIVE: Lipoid pneumonia results from accumulation of lipids in the alveoli and can be either exogenous or endogenous in cause based on the source of the lipid. Exogenous lipoid pneumonia is caused by inhalation or aspiration of animal fat or vegetable or mineral oil. Endogenous lipoid pneumonia is usually associated with bronchial obstruction. The purpose of this article is to review the pathogenesis and clinical and radiologic manifestations of exogenous and endogenous lipoid pneumonia.
CONCLUSION: The ability to recognize the radiologic manifestations of lipoid pneumonia is important be

Exogenous lipoid pneumonia results from the aspiration or inhalation of fatty substances, such as mineral oil found in laxatives or nasal medications containing liquid paraffin. We present standard and lipid-sensitive (Chemical-shift) MR findings in a patient with histologically confirmed lipoid pneumonia. The loss of signal intensity in an area of airspace disease on opposed-phase imaging was considered specific for the presence of lipid.

Lipid-laden macrophages (LLM) in tracheal aspirates are reported to be pathognomonic findings in exo- and endogenous lipoid pneumonia in adults. A pilot study was carried out to evaluate the effect of lipid infusion on the LLM index of the tracheal aspirates from ventilated neonates. All intubated infants were eligible for the study. Infants receiving parenteral nutrition had intravenous (IV) lipid introduced by 4-7 days of age; most samples after 7 days were from infants receiving IV lipid. Four infants received minimal gastric feeding; none had evidence of aspiration pneumonia. Tracheal aspi

OBJECTIVE: Chlamydia pneumoniae has been linked to atherosclerosis, strictly associated with hyperlipidemia. The liver plays a central role in the regulation of lipid metabolism. Since in animal models C. pneumoniae can be found at hepatic level, this study aims to elucidate whether C. pneumoniae infection accelerates atherosclerosis by affecting lipid metabolism.
METHODS: Thirty Balb/c mice were challenged intra-peritoneally with C. pneumoniae elementary bodies and thirty with Chlamydia trachomatis, serovar D. Thirty mice were injected with sucrose-phosphate-glutamate buffer, as negative con

Lipoid pneumonia is a chronic infiltrative pulmonary process secondary to continued aspiration of exogenous lipids (laxatives and nasal drops). On occasions, an acute form of lipoid pneumonia which may lead to respiratory failure may be observed coinciding with accidental massive aspirations of lipidic material. Two cases of acute lipoid pneumonia secondary to paraffin aspiration in << fire eaters >> are presented.

Membrane and soluble fractions of Mycoplasma pneumoniae, M. pulmonis, and M. laidlawii B were prepared by hypotonic lysis of whole cells. The membranes of M. pneumoniae and M. laidlawii B contained, as percentage of dry weight: 34 to 37% protein, 59 to 61% lipid, 3 to 4% carbohydrate as hexose, and 0.2% ribonucleic acid as ribose. NADH(2) and NADPH(2) oxidase activities were localized in the soluble fractions of M. pneumoniae and in the membrane fraction of M. laidlawii B. NADH(2) oxidase activity was localized in the soluble fraction of M. pulmonis. The lipids of M. pneumoniae were labeled wh

OBJECTIVE: Human adenovirus (HAdV) infection is common and can develop to serious conditions with high mortality, yet the mechanism of HAdV infection remains unclear. In the present study, the serum metabolite profiles of HAdV-7-infected patients with pneumonia or upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) were explored.
METHODS: In total, 35 patients were enrolled in the study following an outbreak of HAdV-7 in the army, of whom 14 had pneumonia and 21 had URTI. Blood samples were collected at the acute stage and at the recovery stage and were analyzed by untargeted metabolomics.
RESULTS: Ove

BACKGROUND: Organising pneumonia (OP) is one of the most common and lethal diseases in the category of interstitial pneumonia, along with lung cancer. Reprogramming of lipid metabolism is a newly recognized hallmark of many diseases including cancer, cardiovascular disorders, as well as liver fibrosis and sclerosis. Increased levels of ceramides composed of sphingosine and fatty acid, are implicated in the development of both acute and chronic lung diseases. However, their pathophysiological significance in OP is unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of lipid metabolism re

INTRODUCTION: Lipoid pneumonia is a rare disease affecting adults' which frequency increases with age. Exogenous lipoid pneumonia results from the penetration, usually by inhalation, of oily substances into the pulmonary parenchyma.
AIM: To study the clinical and radiological features of exogenous lipoid pneumonia and to define therapeutic strategies.
METHODS: We performed a monocentric, retrospective study of patients followed in the Pneumology Department of the Hedi Chaker Hospital in Sfax between 2004 and 2023. The diagnosis of exogenous lipoid pneumonia was confirmed by bronchoalveolar l

We report a case of lipoid pneumonia with pulmonary bilateral cavitated lesions. The diagnosis was based on the finding of abundant lipid-laden alveolar macrophages in bronchoalveolar lavage and the presence of histologic changes indicative of lipoid pneumonia in transbronchial lung biopsy.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) represents a predominant multidrug-resistant pathogen that may cause severe bacterial pneumonia. Alveolar macrophages (AMs) serve as the first defensive line against respiratory infections to maintain tissue homeostasis. Licochalcone D (Lico D), a bioactive flavonoid from Glycyrrhiza uralensis, demonstrates protective efficacy against various pulmonary disorders. However, the potential of Lico D to modulate innate immune responses of AMs against bacterial pneumonia and the underlying mechanisms remain unexplored. We herein demonstrate that Lic

Exogenous lipoid pneumonia is an uncommon inflammatory lung disease caused by the aspiration or inhalation of lipid-containing substances. Clinical presentation is highly variable, ranging from asymptomatic disease to progressive respiratory failure, and the condition is often underrecognized in clinical practice. Diagnosis can be challenging because of nonspecific symptoms and imaging findings. We report a case of a 38-year-old woman with suspected exogenous lipoid pneumonia associated with exposure to a commercially available bug spray containing plant-based oils. Bronchoscopy with bronchoal

The most common sources for lipids producing radiographic or clinical evidence of disease in the lungs are endogenous lipids and inhaled (exogenous) mineral oil. Endogenous lipoid pneumonia arises when lung tissue breaks down distal to an obstructed airway leading to the release of cholesterol and other lipids, producing airspace disease. Exogenous lipoid pneumonia occurs most frequently in the elderly following habitual mineral oil use. Many patients have no specific predisposing cause for aspiration of the ingested mineral oils. Symptoms, found in only half of the patients reviewed, include

The exogenous lipoid pneumonia, uncommon in adults, is the result of the inhalation and/or aspiration of lipid material into the tracheobronchial tree. This is often confused with bacterial pneumonia and pulmonary tuberculosis due to a nonspecific clinical and radiologic picture. It presents acutely or chronically and may result in pulmonary fibrosis. We describe here a case of lipoid pneumonia in a gas station attendant who siphoned gasoline to fill motorcycles; he was hospitalized due to presenting with a respiratory infection that was hard to resolve. The patient underwent bronchoscopy with

A 1-year old female spayed German Shepherd dog was evaluated for acute onset of dyspnea. Pyogranulomatous inflammation and green globoid structures were present on aspirates of the affected lung. Impression smears and histopathology confirmed pyogranulomatous pneumonia, with large amounts of lipid corresponding to the green structures noted cytologically, and identified poorly staining bacterial rods within lipid vacuoles. Special stains confirmed the presence of acid-fast bacterial rods, and polymerase chain reaction and DNA sequencing identified the organism as Mycobacterium fortuitum. M. fo

Lipoid pneumonia, although uncommon, should be considered when patients had a chronic pneumonia. We report a case of a 40-year-old female who presented with a chronic pneumonia. The CT-scan analysis, then the bronchoalveolar lavage, revealed a lipoid pneumonia. This lipoid pneumonia was caused by chronic inhalation of niaoulis vapors. This etiology has not been described in the literature. Alveolar condensation disappeared one month after bronchoalveolar lavage. This suggests that bronchoalveolar lavage may contribute to opacity regression besides exogenous lipid eviction.
