In Poland 70 cases of animal rabies were reported in 2007. Since 1993, when mass oral vaccination of wild animals against rabies was introduced in our country, a positive impact of fox immunisation has been visible on the epizootic situation of rabies in Poland. In 2007 we observed more than forty-fold decrease in number of animal rabies cases in comparison with the year 2001. Sources of wild and domestic animal rabies are still present, mainly in the east part of the country (75% of rabies cases). In Poland out of 6,608 people vaccinated against rabies, 91 (1.4%) were bitten by or had contact

There were 31 sporadic cases (60%), 6 outbreaks of two persons and 2 outbreaks involving three persons. Tinned meat (especially home made) was the main vehicle of botulin toxin. In the year 2006 in Poland a total of 130 cases of human trichinellosis were registered, 5 of which were individual cases. The remaining cases occurred in seven outbreaks. Two outbreaks were large and involved 257 exposed people of which 104 became ill. The source of the infection in most of the outbreaks was wild boar meat. In 2 outbreaks the infected products were prepared from pork and wild boar meat and in one of the outbreaks only from pork. The presence of Trichinella endemic areas in Poland determines the necessity of careful meat inspection for Trichinella spp.

In 2006, 15,115 cases of mumps were reported in Poland. The incidence (39.6 per 100,000) was considerably lower compared to 2005 (188.5) and to the median incidence in 2000-2004 (104.6). The decrease of mumps incidence in 2006 is related to high coverage of routine two-dose immunisation against measles, mumps and rubella, maintained since its implementation in 2003. Children 5-9 year old were the most affected age group (incidence 328.7 per 100,000). Since the immunisation schedule during 2003-2006 involved administration of MMR doses at the ages of 2 and 10 years, a stable decrease of mumps i

In Poland, 20,668 cases of rubella were registered in 2006 (incidence 54.2 per 100,000 population), of which 103 (0.5%) cases were laboratory confirmed, and 173 (0.8%) were confirmed based on the epidemiological link with laboratory confirmed cases. The remaining 98.7% were reported based on clinician's diagnosis. No cases of congenital rubella syndrome were reported. In 2006 a 1.6-fold increase in incidence was noted, compared to 2005. As in 2005 rubella incidence among residents of urban areas was lower, compared to residents of rural areas (43.6 and 71.0 respectively). The incidence in men

The total number of 163 cases of human trichinellosis was reported in Poland in 2004. Out of 163 cases 155 were notified from 6 outbreaks. In two outbreaks more than 50 persons were ill. Boar meat was the source of infections in 5 of the outbreaks. The presence of Trichinella endemic areas in the north, central and east parts of the country still determines the necessity of careful meat surveillance on Trichinella spp.

In 2004, 15958 salmonellosis cases were reported (16617 in previous year), the incidence rate was 41,8 per 100 000 population. Seventy-one percent of patients were hospitalized, however the hospitalization ratio was higher for extraintestinal manifestations - 89%. As in previous years the seasonal peak was observed between June and August. The most frequently isolated type remained Salmonella Enteritidis--above 87% of cases. Only four other serotypes (Typhimurium, Hadar, Virchow and Infantis) were detected in all regions (voivodeship) of Poland. The age, gender, and urban/rural distributions o

In 2003 year decrease of tuberculosis notification rates in Poland has continued. In this year 10 125 tuberculosis cases (TB) were notified in Poland--incidence rate--26.5 per 100 000 population, with the large differences in notification rates between voivodeships (from 16.9 to 39.8/100 000). Between 1994-2003 notification rates decreased by 3.9% yearly overall. 87.8% of the TB cases notified were new cases. Pulmonary cases represented 90.9% of TB cases. Male to female sex ratio--2.1. Age specific rates were much lower in children--1.5/100 000 (100 cases)--1% of all TB cases and highest in pe

In Poland in 2002, one case of human rabies was reported. There is no information about bitemark of the person with rabies and the person has not vaccinated. Mass oral vaccination of wild animals against rabies, which was introduced in 1993, seems to show a positive impact on the epizootic situation of rabies in Poland. In 2002 year we observed more than two-fold decrease in number of animal rabies cases. The outbreak of animal rabies, which started in 2001 year in Wielkopolskie voivodeship was still present. A 52% decrease in incidence was noted with respect to the epidemic year 2001. Across the voivodeships the incidence ranged from 227.7 per 100,000 in wielkopolskie to 21.4 per 100,000 in warminsko-mazurskie. As in 2001 urban areas registered slightly lower incidence than the rural areas (104.2 and 108.9 respectively). Total number of salmonellosis cases has been gradually falling down since the year 1988. In 2001, 19,881 cases were reported to the sanitary epidemiological stations, incidence rate = 51.5 per 100,000 population (22,799 in the previous year). Over 52% of patients were hospitalized, but percentage of cases with extraintestinal manifestations was higher--over 88%. The seasonal peak was noted in July and August, which was two months later than in 2000. The decreasing trend in confirmation of clinical diagnosis can be observed since 1995 when Salmonella strains were isolated in 91% of patients, bu

In 2001, 16,724 cases of mumps were reported in Poland. Incidence of 43.3 per 100,000 was slightly lower than in previous year. Approximately 4.5% of mumps cases were hospitalised (751). Children in the 5 to 9 age group were mostly affected (incidence ranged from 272.2 to 483.6). Children in this age group constituted 54.1% of total number of cases. The MMR vaccine is not included into the national programme of immunisation, the vaccination is recommended on voluntary basis for 2-year and 7-year old children.

In the year 2000 thirty six cases of trichinellosis were reported and registered in Poland. Most of them (26 cases) were noted in western region of the country (wielkopolskie voivodeship). Consumption of meat from four pigs and six boars caused 32 infections. In four sporadic cases--sources of the infection were not discovered. A total of 19 men and 17 women were infected (including three children up to 14 years of age). Twenty-six persons were hospitalized. No deaths from trichinellosis were reported in the year 2000.

In 2000, as compared with 1999, a 49% increase in the number of rubella cases was noted. It corresponded to the development a new compensatory epidemic (the peak of the last epidemic was observed in 1997). A total of 49,181 cases were registered, including 1 case of congenital rubella. Incidence on the country level was 119.5 per 100,000 population. In particular voivodeships it ranged from 24.0 to 314.8. Incidence in urban areas was 35% higher than in rural areas. Incidence among women (109.0) was 16% lower than among men (130.6). One of the probable reasons of this difference was intensive i

A total of 17,548 mumps cases were reported in Poland in 2000. A 5-fold decrease in incidence of the disease (from 233.4 to 45.4 per 100,000 population) was noted, when compared with 1999. Approximately 4.8% of mumps cases were hospitalized (849 cases). The majority of the reported cases were children aged 5-9 (51.4% of all cases). In all voivodships the incidence was lower than in previous years. The probable cause of the decline of mumps cases was a marked amelioration of MMR vaccination coverage among 3-year old children. The MMR vaccine is not included into the national program of immuniza
