A differential pulse polarographic procedure was developed for the assay of dimercaptosuccinic acid and tin(II), components of a commercially available pharmaceutical kit for kidney scintigraphy. The method is quantitative and qualitative for both the chelated and unchelated forms of dimercaptosuccinic acid and tin(II) in a mixture of the two.

Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) was used to study the binding of Cd(2+) and Zn(2+) by glutathione (GSH) and phytochelatins (PC(n)), the metal sequestering compounds in plants and algae. The hydroalcoholic extract of Poria cocos and two lanostane derivatives isolated from it, pachymic acid (1) and dehydrotumulosic acid (2), were active as inhibitors of phospholipase A2 from snake venom when a polarographic method was used. Dehydrotumulosic acid exhibited an IC50 of 0.845 mM. These two compounds are structurally related to certain triterpenoids from Ganoderma and Schinus that have previously been described as competitive inhibitors of phospholipase A2. These comprise a new group of natural potential antiinflammatory agents due to their interaction with that enzyme.

A comparison was firstly done of the oxygen flux through the Bausch and Lomb Plano T lens, the Bausch & Lomb U3 lens, and the Duragel 75 lens with a sensor on the normal eye. The results showed that the Bausch and Lomb Plano T lens was the best for use with the sensor probe. The sensor was then used to obtain a comparison with the normal oxygen flux through a therapeutic lens on keratoplastic eyes and eyes with bullous keratopathy. The results showed that both conditions had a lower oxygen consumption than normal and that eyes with bullous keratopathy predictably had the lowest value.

The conformation of atropine was studied by nmr and dipole moment measurements. It was shown that there is a cis conformation between the C = O bond in the ester group and the tropanyl group. The nmr measurements indicated that the Ph--CH(CH2OH)--CO-- grouping assumes conformations I and II in equilibrium, while the conformational isomer III can be excluded. Consequently, the distance between the nitrogen atom and the carbonyl group is 4.5--5.0 A, and this determines the binding to the cholinergic receptor. This distance is substantially less than the 7 A presumed by other authors earlier.

We have confirmed earlier observations that this can be prevented by the immediate application of ascorbic acid (AA) with the aim of reducing Cr(VI) to Cr(III). "Oxygraph" apparatus was used to measure quantitatively the kinetics of oxidation of synthetic covellite (CuS) in the presence and absence of Thiobacillus species. The expected stoichiometric relationship between oxygen consumed and cupric sulphate produced was verified by atomic absorption assays of cupric ion and sulphate ion. Thiobacillus cultures markedly increased the oxidation rate. The dependence of each oxygen-uptake rate on oxygen concentration was also measured.
