From intent to implementation: Factors affecting public involvement in life science research.

Public involvement is key to closing the gap between research production and research use, and the only way to achieving ultimate transparency in science. The majority of life science research is not public-facing, but is funded by the public and impacts communities. We undertook an exploratory survey of researchers within the life sciences to better understand their views and perceived challenges to involving the public in their research. As survey response rate could not be determined, interpretation of the results must be cautious. We had a valid response cohort of n = 110 researchers, of w

Closed venereology wards in the GDR.

BACKGROUND: At least 10 closed venereology wards existed in the GDR. To this date, the history of these wards has not yet been investigated thoroughly. OBJECTIVE: The history of the closed venereology wards in the GDR will be reconstructed by taking those in Halle (Saale) and Leipzig-Thonberg as examples. At the centre of the examination are the daily routines, the medical treatment and the education of the women. METHODS: Extensive archival research was conducted and the historical sources were critically evaluated. Moreover, interviews were held with women who had been admitted against the

Multiple Clinical Indications of Mifepristone: A Systematic Review.

Mifepristone and misoprostol are globally used medications that have become disparaged through the stigmatization of reproductive healthcare. Patients are hindered from receiving prompt treatment in clinical scenarios where misoprostol and mifepristone are the drugs of choice. It is no exaggeration to emphasize that in cases where reproductive healthcare is concerned. The aim of this paper is to discuss the different indications of mifepristone and to delineate where the discrepancy in accessibility arises. For this systematic review, we included publications citing clinical trials involving t

Social complexity of a fentanyl vaccine to prevent opioid overdose conference proceedings: Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study conference proceedings.

Despite significant public health attention and investment, hundreds of thousands of individuals have suffered fatal opioid overdose since the onset of the opioid crisis. Risk of opioid overdose has been exacerbated by the influx of fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid, into the drug supply. The National Institutes of Health Helping End Addiction Long-term (HEAL) Initiative is supporting the development of vaccines targeting fentanyl to protect against overdose. If successful, a vaccine would induce anti-fentanyl antibodies to sequester fentanyl (but not other opioids) in the blood, preventin

Code Red: The Essential Yet Neglected Role of Emergency Care in Health Law Reform.

The United States' health care system is mired in uncertainty. Public opinion on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act ("ACA") is undeniably mixed and politicized. The individual mandate, tax subsidies, and Medicaid expansion dominate the discussion. This Article argues that the ACA and reform discourse have given short shrift to a more static problem: the law of emergency care. The Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act of 1986 ("EMTALA") requires most hospitals to screen patients for emergency medical conditions and provide stabilizing treatment regardless of patients' ins

Political context and COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in the European Union: populism, government trustworthiness, and policy.

Vaccine hesitancy is a significant 21st Century public health challenge, with vaccines being increasingly politicized in public and government discourse and policymaking, particularly since the introduction of COVID-19 vaccines. We evaluate the potential roles of national political and policy context for individuals' COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy across 27 European Union countries at two timepoints of the pandemic-assessing the extent to which national-level populism and government trustworthiness are associated with individuals' COVID-19 vaccination attitudes and receipt (actual or intended)-dir

A historical overview of the anti-vaccine movement and its public health implications.

Vaccination is one of the most effective public health interventions in history, yet resistance to vaccines has persisted across centuries. This narrative historical review examines the evolution of vaccine hesitancy and anti-vaccine sentiment from the smallpox era to the COVID-19 pandemic. Sources were identified through PubMed and major public health organizations, including the World Health Organization and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, spanning the early 18th century through 2025. Across distinct historical periods, including early smallpox vaccination, mid-20th-cent

Miracle cures, wonder drugs, and unproven treatments for COVID-19: A global database.

BACKGROUND: Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, various substances were promoted and used as preventive measures, cures, and treatments for COVID-19, from repurposed drugs to traditional medicines and herbal remedies. Scholars have described the politicized promotion of these substances as 'pharmaceutical messianism'. In this article we show the broad range of these substances, drawing from a wide range of data sources including the use of emergent and generative AI. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review of major academic databases and public health websites to create a global database of unpr

Understanding Interventions to Address Infodemics Through Epidemiological, Socioecological, and Environmental Health Models: Framework Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic was accompanied by a barrage of false, misleading, and manipulated information that inhibited effective pandemic response and led to thousands of preventable deaths. Recognition of the urgent public health threat posed by this infodemic led to the development of numerous infodemic management interventions by a wide range of actors. The need to respond rapidly and with limited information sometimes came at the expense of strategy and conceptual rigor. Given limited funding for public health communication and growing politicization of countermisinformation effor

Local perspectives on Ebola during its tenth outbreak in DR Congo: A nationwide qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: The Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) struggled to end the tenth outbreak of Ebola virus disease (Ebola), which appeared in North Kivu in 2018. It was reported that rumors were hampering the response effort. We sought to identify any rumors that could have influenced outbreak containment and affected prevention in unaffected areas of DR Congo. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study in DR Congo over a period of 2 months (from August 1 to September 30, 2019) using in-depth interviews (IDIs) and focus group discussions (FGDs). The participants were recruited from five region

Community health care workers in pursuit of TB: Discourses and dilemmas.

Community-led tuberculosis (TB) active case finding is widely promoted, heavily funded, but many efforts fail to meet expectations. The underlying reasons why TB symptom screening programs underperform are poorly understood. This study examines Nigerian stakeholders' insights to characterize the mechanisms, enabling structures and influences that lead programs to succeed or fail. Eight focus group discussions were held with Community Health Workers (CWs) from four models of community-based TB screening and referral. In-depth interviews were conducted with 2 State TB program managers, 8 Communi

Compounding for the Treatment of COVID-19 and Long COVID, Part 2: Manifestations of Infection, Nomenclature, Transmission, and Treatment.

Described by some authors as a "black swan event . . . likened to the economic scene of World War Two," the effects of coronavirus-disease-2019 (COVID-19) and attempted techniques for its prevention and treatment have presented medical, economic, social, and (often) politicized challenges on a global scale. Caused by the highly transmissible severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), COVID-19 is, in many patients, associated with severe morbidity and mortality during the first few weeks after infection. At the time of this writing, estimates indicate that up to 70% of surviv

The Social Lives of Infectious Diseases: Why Culture Matters to COVID-19.

Over the course of the year 2020, the global scientific community dedicated considerable effort to understanding COVID-19. In this review, we discuss some of the findings accumulated between the onset of the pandemic and the end of 2020, and argue that although COVID-19 is clearly a biological disease tied to a specific virus, the culture-mind relation at the heart of cultural psychology is nonetheless essential to understanding the pandemic. Striking differences have been observed in terms of relative mortality, transmission rates, behavioral responses, official policies, compliance with auth

The pervasive association between political ideology and COVID-19 vaccine uptake in Brazil: an ecologic study.

BACKGROUND: Despite the unequivocal benefits of vaccination, vaccine coverage has been falling in several countries in the past few years. Studies suggest that vaccine hesitancy is an increasingly significant phenomenon affecting adherence to vaccines. More recently, during the COVID-19 pandemic, political views have emerged as an additional influencing factor for vaccine hesitancy. METHODS: In this ecologic study, we used information from publicly available databases to investigate the association between political ideology, depicted by the percentage of votes for the right-wing candidate Ja

Transportation control and epidemic containment: empirical evidence from China's Wuhan lockdown.

BACKGROUND: The rapid development of modern transportation networks, coupled with increasing urbanization and population mobility, presents a dual challenge for global public health systems: while enhancing connectivity and economic integration, these networks also accelerate the spatial dissemination of infectious diseases. The COVID-19 pandemic, which emerged in Wuhan, China, in late 2019, starkly illustrated this paradox. As a major national transportation hub with dense high-speed rail (HSR) connectivity, Wuhan exemplifies how modern transport infrastructure can facilitate the rapid interc

Contextualizing Changes in e-Cigarette Use During the Early COVID-19 Pandemic and Accompanying Infodemic ("So Much Contradictory Evidence"): Qualitative Document Analysis of Reddit Forums.

BACKGROUND: Understanding how social media platforms facilitate information exchange and influence behavior during health crises can enhance public health responses during times of uncertainty. While some risk factors for COVID-19 susceptibility and severity (eg, old age) were clear, whether e-cigarette use increased risk was not clear. People who used e-cigarettes had to navigate both the COVID-19 infodemic and a conflicting, politicized, and changing information environment about the interaction between COVID-19 and e-cigarette use. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to characterize and contextuali

Historical perspectives on music as a cause of disease.

The relationship between music and medicine is generally understood in the benign context of music therapy, but, as this chapter shows, there is a long parallel history of medical theories that suggest that music can cause real physical and mental illness. During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the idea of music as an expression of universal harmony was challenged by a more mechanistic model of nervous stimulation. By the 1790s, there was a substantial discourse on the dangers of musical overstimulation to health in medicine, literature, and etiquette books. During the nineteenth cen

Second-Class Care: How Immigration Law Transforms Clinical Practice in the Safety Net.

This article examines how U.S. immigration law extends into the health care safety net, enacting medical legal violence that diminishes noncitizens' health chances and transforms clinical practices. Drawing on interviews with health care workers in three U.S. states from 2015 to 2020, I ask how federal citizenship-based exclusions within an already stratified health care system shape the clinical trajectories of noncitizens in safety-net institutions. Focusing specifically on cancer care, I find that increasingly anti-immigrant federal policies often reshape clinical practices toward noncitize

Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Approvals of Biological Drugs in 2023.

An increase in total drug (small molecules and biologics) approvals by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was seen in 2023 compared with the previous year. Cancer remained the disease most targeted by monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), followed by autoimmune conditions. Our data reveal the prevalence of approvals for biologics even during years when the total number of authorizations was low, such as in 2022. Over half the drugs that received the green light in 2023 benefited from expedited programs, as the incidence of many diseases increased. In addition, over half of the biologics approved r
