The Reparative Ability of the Aligned Decellularized Annulus Fibrosus Matrix/Poly(Ether Carbonate Urethane)Urea Blended Fibrous Scaffolds on Annulus Fibrosus Defects.

Currently, there is a lack of effective methods to repair annulus fibrosus (AF) defects in clinical practice. Therefore, exploring strategies to promote AF regeneration is of significant importance for delaying intervertebral disc degeneration. In recent years, tissue engineering technology has become a hotspot in the field of AF repair, offering promising treatments for intervertebral disc degenerative diseases. Studies have shown that surface structural characteristics, such as the fiber orientation of scaffold materials, play a crucial role in regulating the differentiation of cells adherin

First In Vitro Characterization of Salinomycinic Acid-Containing Two-Line Ferrihydrite Composites with Pronounced Antitumor Activity as MRI Contrast Agents.

Iron(III) (Fe(III)) complexes have recently emerged as safer alternatives to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents (CAs), reigniting interest in biomedical research. Although gadolinium Gd(III)-based contrast agents (CAs) have been widely used in MRI over the past four decades, their use in the current clinical routine is severely constrained due to concerns about high toxicity and environmental impact. Research is now focusing on synthesizing safer contrast agents with alternative paramagnetic ions like Fe(III) or Mn(II). MRI CAs with integrated potent therapeutic moieties may offe

Selective extraction of gambierone and related metabolites in Gambierdiscus silvae using m-aminophenylboronic acid-agarose gel and liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometric detection.

Gambierdiscus spp. are epi-benthic dinoflagellates that have been associated with ciguatera poisoning. These microalgae can have complex secondary metabolite profiles including ciguatoxins, maitotoxins, and gambierones, with varying compositions and toxicities across species and strains. Given this chemical diversity there is a need to develop selective and sensitive methods for secondary metabolite profiling. In this study, we used a cultured Caribbean strain of Gambierdiscus silvae to develop sample preparation and analysis strategies for characterizing vic-diol containing secondary metaboli

Osteoinductive sandwich-structured HA/PEEK implant for rapid critical-size skull repair.

Critical-size bone defects afflict millions annually, driving a cascade of inflammation and incomplete tissue regeneration. Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) remains the material of choice for load-bearing implants because its modulus mirrors that of cortical bone; yet its notorious bioinertness curtails both anti-inflammatory signaling and osseointegration, stalling the healing process. To break this stalemate, we designed a sandwich-structured, osteoinductive hydroxyapatite (HA)/PEEK implant tailored for skull repair. A porous PEEK core was engineered via the salting out technique and its surface

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK)-based open tubular ion chromatography for perchlorate detection.

Open tubular ion chromatography (OTIC) offers a lightweight, low-pressure and efficient platform for on-site ion analysis. Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is an attractive column substrate because of its mechanical strength, chemical resistance and thermal stability, yet conventional sulfuric-acid sulfonation limits ion-exchange capacity and requires long preparation times. Here, a mixed methanesulfonic and sulfuric acid reagent followed by acetone rinsing was used to streamline the sulfonation process, producing a roughened inner surface with higher functional group density. The optimized 25 μm i

Effects of environmental variables on phycotoxin degradation and preliminary identification of transformation products.

Phycotoxins are released from phytoplankton into the water column during rapid cell division or during bloom termination. These processes introduce pulses of dissolved phycotoxins into coastal systems that can deleteriously impact animal, environmental, and human health. Despite evidence that they can persist months beyond their extracellular release, environmental factors controlling phycotoxin fate and persistence within aquatic environments have not been thoroughly studied. As such, we investigated the stability of four phycotoxins (pectenotoxin-2, yessotoxin, azaspiracid-2, and okadaic aci

Strain rate sensitivity of PEEK high performance biopolymer in ΜΕΧ 3D printing: Compressive thermomechanical fracture mechanisms.

In structural and biomedical applications, where high-speed loading is a major concern for mechanical reliability, high-performance polymers (HPP) are increasingly required. Still, their thermomechanical response produced by additive manufacturing methods has not been fully characterized. In this study, the strain-rate-dependent compressive behavior of specimens, 3D printed by the material extrusion (MEX) method with the polyether ether ketone (PEEK) biopolymer, has been investigated. Simultaneously, the evolution of specimen temperature has been monitored using an infrared camera. Compression

A perspective on the toxicology of marine toxins.

Although there has been much progress with regard to marine toxins from dinoflagellates, much remains to be done. Because these compounds are a seafood consumer risk, the demands cover from legislative to scientific aspects. Legislation is required for all new toxins that appear in the coasts. On the other hand, it is important to understand the toxicity of the different analogues, in terms of both the relative toxicity to reference compounds and the mechanism of toxicity itself, both acute and long-term. For this, a uniform approach to do toxic studies is necessary, especially acute toxicity.

Studies on the mode of action of ciguateric toxins.

The effects of ciguatoxin, scaritoxin and maitotoxin, the main toxins involved in ciguatera fish poisoning, has been studied in pentobarbital anaesthetized cats. Intravenous injections of increasing doses of these toxins (5 to 160 microgram/kg of partially purified samples) evoked respiratory and cardiovascular disturbances: hyperventilation at low doses and respiratory depression leading to respiratory arrest at high doses; bradycardia and troubles of the atrioventricular conduction at low doses, arrhythmias and ventricular tachycardia with transient hypertension at sublethal doses, and falli

Investigating challenges in handling, stability and recovery of prymnesins.

Prymnesium parvum is a globally distributed haptophyte that produces an array of ichthyotoxic compounds known as prymnesins. Prymnesins are large polyethers ranging in size from 1600 to 2300 Da. Initial investigations towards the development of prymnesin reference materials identified significant problems with recovery and stability. A systematic series of studies was conducted to determine the effects of solvent composition, pH, evaporation to dryness and solid-phase extraction (SPE) resin on the stability and recovery of prymnesins. Experiments investigated A- and B-type prymnesins to verify

Intravenous Polyethylene Glycol Alleviates Intestinal Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury in a Rodent Model.

Intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is a common clinical entity, and its outcome is unpredictable due to the triad of inflammation, increased permeability and bacterial translocation. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a polyether compound that is extensively used in pharmacology as an excipient in various products. More recently, this class of products have shown to have potent anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, immunosuppressive and cell-membrane-stabilizing properties. However, its effects on the outcome after intestinal IRI have not yet been investigated. We hypothesized that PEG admini

Effect of the contamination and cleaning methods on the tensile bond strength of the polyetheretherketone restorative material cemented with dual-cure resin cement.

BACKGROUND: These days, computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) resinbased materials are being used daily in clinical practice for restorations in prosthetic dentistry. In comparison with ceramic materials, they are characterized by better stress distribution and decreased abrasion of the enamel of the opposing teeth. Consequently, they have been applied as alternative materials to ceramics in various dental restorations. OBJECTIVES: The contamination of the indirect restorative material, which occurs at the clinical and dental laboratory stages, might deteriorate the bon

Compact mid-infrared fiber probe for in vivo multi-compound monitoring demonstrated using ex vivo human skin.

Simultaneous monitoring of multiple biomarkers in tissues is critical for biomedical applications. However, few existing platforms enable concurrent in vivo detection. This study presents a compact mid-infrared transflection optical fiber probe for label-free, simultaneous monitoring of three physiologically relevant biomarkers - ethanol, glucose, and lactate. The probe comprises two silver halide fibers - one with an angled tip and one gold-coated as mirror - housed in polyetheretherketone tubing and surrounded by a semi-permeable membrane. With an outer diameter of only 1.1 mm, this is the s

Interfacial Engineering of Fatty Alcohol Polyoxyethylene Ether Enables Lesion-Targeted Deposition on Pathogen-Infected Apple Leaves.

Pathogen infection creates heterogeneous, rough leaf interfaces that hinder pesticide deposition at disease lesions. Here, we report an interfacial engineering strategy using fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether surfactants (AEO-4 to AEO-7) to achieve selective deposition on apple Alternaria blotch lesions. Through interfacial characterization (surface free energy, roughness, contact angle), high-speed droplet impact analysis, and energy dissipation modeling, we systematically evaluated the structure-activity relationship of AEO surfactants. Field validation was conducted under natural disease
