Ultraviolet shielding and antibacterial dialdehyde cellulose-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite packaging film for strawberry preservation.

With the aim of improving capacity of food packaging films, active composite films are fabricated by cross-linking of dialdehyde cellulose (DAC) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with polyethyleneimine (PEI). Comparing with pure PVA film, the composite film containing 15 % DAC shows excellent properties. The multi network formed between PVA, DAC and PEI improve elongation of film from 88.7 % to 117.0 %, and UV shielding from 13 % to 94 %. The aldehyde groups of DAC enable film the ability of 54.4 % 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 92 % 2,2'-zino-bis-3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABT

Bioinspired Polyvinyl Alcohol-Based Foam Fabricated via Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Foaming for Atmospheric Water Harvesting.

The intensifying freshwater crisis underscores the critical need for all-weather, low-energy atmospheric water harvesting technologies. Inspired by the scale-like protrusions and interconnected channels of Tillandsia leaves that enable efficient water capture and release, a polyvinyl alcohol-based foam featuring a three-dimensional porous structure is fabricated using the supercritical carbon dioxide foaming technology. Compared to the traditional freeze-drying method, this approach significantly reduces preparation energy consumption and shortens the production cycle. Lithium chloride integra

Self-healing and adhesive MXene-polypyrrole/silk fibroin/polyvinyl alcohol conductive hydrogels as wearable sensor.

Conductive hydrogels become increasing attractive for flexible electronic devices and biosensors. However, challenges still remain in fabrication of flexible hydrogels with high electrical conductivity, self-healing capability and adhesion property. Herein, a conductive hydrogel (PSDM) was prepared by solution-gel method using MXene and dopamine modified polypyrrole as conductive enhanced materials, polyvinyl alcohol and silk fibroin as gel networks, and borax as cross-linking agent. Notably, the PSDM hydrogels not only showed high permeability (13.82 mg∙cm-2∙h-1), excellent stretch ability (1

Collagen/polyvinyl alcohol scaffolds combined with platelet-rich plasma to enhance anterior cruciate ligament repair.

In anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair methods, the continuous enzymatic erosion of synovial fluid can impede healing and potentially lead to repair failure, as well as exacerbate articular cartilage wear, resulting in joint degeneration. Inspired by the blood clot during medial collateral ligament healing, we developed a composite scaffold comprising collagen (1 %, w/v) and polyvinyl alcohol (5 %, w/v) combined with platelet-rich plasma (PRP). The composite scaffold provides a protective barrier against synovial erosion for the ruptured ACL, while simultaneously facilitating tissue repair

Polyvinyl alcohol/cellulose nanocrystals/alkyl ketene dimer nanocomposite as a novel biodegradable food packing material.

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is used in many applications because of its excellent physicochemical properties, non-toxicity, and biodegradability. However, its relatively low water resistance, poor water vapor/ultraviolet (UV) barrier properties, and poor mechanical properties compared with conventional polymers limit its applications in food packaging. In this study, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) were used to overcome these issues. The mechanical properties, water resistance, and barrier properties of the developed PVA/CNC/AKD films were significantly improved relative

Polyvinyl alcohol-immobilized Phanerochaete chrysosporium and its application in the bioremediation of composite-polluted wastewater.

A novel biosorbent, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-immobilized Phanerochaete chrysosporium, was applied to the bioremediation of composite-polluted wastewater, containing both cadmium and 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP). The optimum removal efficiency achieved was 78% for Cd(II) and 95.4% for 2,4-DCP at initial concentrations of 20 mg/L Cd(II) and 40 mg/L 2,4-DCP. PPBs had significantly enhanced the resistance of P. chrysosporium to 2,4-DCP, leading to the degradation rates of 2,4-DCP beyond 90% with varying initial 2,4-DCP concentrations. This research demonstrated that 2,4-DCP and secreted proteins mi

Effects of new anti-adhesion polyvinyl alcohol gel on healing of colon anastomoses in rats.

BACKGROUND: Adhesions follow abdominal surgery with an incidence as high as 95%, resulting in invalidating complications such as bowel obstruction, female infertility, and chronic pain. Searches have been performed for a safe and effective adhesion barrier; however, such barriers have impaired anastomotic site healing. The primary aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a new adhesion barrier, polyvinyl alcohol gel, on healing of colonic anastomoses using a rat model. METHODS: Thirty-two Wistar rats were divided in two groups. In all animals, an anastomosis was constructed in the a

Histopathological follow-up study of 66 cerebral arteriovenous malformations after therapeutic embolization with polyvinyl alcohol.

Embolization with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is an accepted method of rendering complex arteriovenous malformations (AVM's) more amenable to surgery, but its effects on human vascular tissues have not been adequately documented. The authors reviewed the histopathology of 66 intracranial AVM's resected 1 to 76 days after embolization with PVA. The mean age of the patients was 36 years, and their AVM's were located in the cerebral hemispheres (92%), the cerebellum (6%), or the corpus callosum (2%). In 79% of cases, at least one vessel contained PVA particles; in most cases, the vessel was filled wi

Sodium hyaluronate and polyvinyl alcohol artificial tear preparations. A comparison in patients with keratoconjunctivitis sicca.

An unpreserved artificial tear substitute containing 0.1% sodium hyaluronate was compared with a preparation containing 1.4% polyvinyl alcohol and 0.5% chlorobutanol in a controlled, double-masked, randomized study in patients with moderately severe keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Patients were evaluated initially, at 1, 4, and 8 weeks. The dry-eye status was evaluated by means of tear-film osmolality, tear breakup time, rose bengal staining, Schirmer's test (without anesthesia), and ocular surface-impression cytology. In general, neither preparation was found to be superior to the other. In both

Polyvinyl Alcohol-Coated Polycaprolactone Microneedles as Polymeric Microdevices for Transdermal Antigen Delivery and Immune Activation.

Conventional needle-and-syringe vaccination is associated with pain, needle-related anxiety, the need for trained personnel, and logistical challenges related to vaccine distribution and storage. Microneedle (MN) technology has emerged as a minimally invasive strategy for transdermal delivery and as a platform for functional polymeric microdevices. In this study, polycaprolactone (PCL) microneedles coated with hydrophilic polymers were evaluated as a model platform for antigen delivery. Ex vivo assays using porcine ear skin were explored as a preliminary approach to assess antigen transport fr

Preparation and Characterization of Bacterial Cellulose-Polyvinyl Alcohol Composite Hydrogels Using ZnCl2 Hydrates as Solvent.

Bacterial cellulose (BC) is highly valued for biomedical and industrial applications due to its exceptional biocompatibility, strength, and biodegradability. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) exhibits favorable characteristics, making it an ideal candidate for hydrogel formulation. In this study, BC-PVA composite hydrogels were synthesized by dissolving 1% w/w BC in ZnCl2 3H2O and 10% w/w PVA in ZnCl2nH2O, n = 6, 9, 12, and 15. These solutions were combined at BC:PVA weight ratios of 3:1, 1:1, and 1:3, then crosslinking using a glutaraldehyde-acetone solution before immersion in deionized water. The res

Multifunctional films of cellulose nanocrystal reinforced polyvinyl alcohol through citric acid crosslinking for efficient freshness.

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a promising biodegradable packaging material, but its widespread application is severely limited by several drawbacks, including insufficient strength, poor water resistance, weak UV shielding properties, and poor preservation ability. In this study, PVA/cellulose nanocrystals/citric acid (PVA/CNC/CA) composites were fabricated using a solution blending combined with thermal crosslinking process. The effects of CNC content and CA amount on the structure and properties of the composites were systematically investigated. The crosslinked PVA composites exhibited an enha

Pre-Wetting Reduces Blood Component Deposition on Polyvinyl Alcohol-Coated Poly-ε-Caprolactone Nanofiber Grafts.

Hydrophilic surface modification is widely investigated as a strategy to improve the hemocompatibility of small-diameter vascular grafts. We previously developed a polyvinyl alcohol-coated poly-ε-caprolactone nanofiber graft (PVA-PCL graft) and showed that the PVA coating improved graft hydrophilicity and mechanical properties. However, whether this coating provides an in vivo advantage over uncoated PCL grafts remains unclear. In addition, the influence of pre-implantation surface hydration on the function of hydrophilic grafts has not been fully examined. In this study, we first compared PVA

Electrospun Hyaluronic Acid/Polyvinyl Alcohol Nanofibers Encapsulating Defactinib as Bioactive Dressings for Burn Wound Therapy.

Chronic burn wounds remain a significant clinical challenge due to prolonged inflammation, delayed tissue regeneration, and limited effectiveness of current topical therapies. In this study, electrospun hyaluronic acid/poly(vinyl alcohol) (HA/PVA) nanofiber scaffolds loaded with Defactinib, a focal adhesion kinase inhibitor, were developed to promote burn wound healing through localized drug delivery. Optimized electrospinning conditions produced uniform, bead-free nanofibers with stable amorphous drug dispersion, as confirmed by SEM, TEM, XRD, and DSC analyses. The Defactinib-loaded nanofiber

Vacuum compression-molded polyvinyl alcohol microneedles for sustained three-day transdermal delivery of palonosetron hydrochloride.

This study introduces vacuum compression molding (VCM) as a novel, solvent-free method for fabricating palonosetron hydrochloride (PAL HCl)-loaded polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) microneedles (MNs), addressing limitations of conventional micromolding such as extended drying times, batch variability, and solvent residues. PAL HCl-a hydrophilic 5-HT3 receptor antagonist (MW: 332.85 g/mol) with a low therapeutic dose-was selected for its clinical relevance in managing chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV). The microneedle platform offers advantages over PAL HCl's existing oral and injectable do
