[Predominantly ipsilateral smooth pursuit impairment associated with a lesion in the basal pons].

In contrast to the well-defined brainstem centers for saccades and eye reflexes, the brainstem centers mediating smooth pursuit eye movements are poorly understood. In monkeys, unilateral damage to the basal pons impairs horizontal smooth pursuit in the direction of the side of the lesion. The major source of afferents to the basal pons is the middle temporal area (MT). The dorsolateral pontine nucleus (DLPN) in the basal pons is considered to be the major gateway for smooth pursuit related signals to the contralateral flocculus. In humans, only one patient was found to have a unilateral lesio

[Angiographic occult vascular abnormalities in the area of the pons. Two case reports].

On the basis of two case reports of occult vascular malformation of the pons that had been followed since the first clinical manifestation, clinical picture, diagnosis using modern imaging methods (especially magnetic resonance imaging--MRI) and therapy of this disease are discussed. In addition to a precise localization diagnosis based on typical scans of varying signal intensity, particularly after bleeding, MRI also allows a preoperative qualitative identification of the lesion and provides important information about the dynamics of the process. Further experience with this uncommon clinic

[Isolated sensory deficit of 1 side of the body as a result of a hematoma of the pons].

In a patient with a history of sudden onset of an isolated sensory syndrome of the right side of the body the sensory deficit was exclusively related to lemniscal sensitivity. NMR imaging showed a small hemorrhage in the left paramedian portion of the pontine tegmentum, corresponding precisely to the location of the median lemniscus.

Histological and histoenzymological studies on the medulla oblongata and pons of hedgehog (Paraechinus micropus).

A comparative study of the acid and alkaline phosphatases within the medulla oblongata and pons of the hedgehog revealed the following facts: 1. All the cellular elements are positive for acid phosphatase, irrespective of their sensory or motor nature, and the large neurons of all the nuclei are more strongly positive than the small cells. Furthermore, the nuclei which contain a dense population of neurons, appear to be more strongly positive than areas containing scattered neurons. 2. Alkaline phosphatase preparations show a strong activity in the walls of blood capillaries of all the nuclei

Security-enhanced layered coding multiple access for heterogeneous QoS requirements in IMDD-PONs.

A secure layered coding multiple access (LCMA) scheme based on power division multiplexing (PDM) is proposed for low-cost intensity modulation direct detection (IMDD) passive optical networks (PONs). The proposed PDM-LCMA scheme achieves layered modulation by deconstructing heterogeneous user data into a shared layer and a dedicated layer, enabling flexible adjustment of the signal structure based on differentiated quality of service (QoS) requirements. Experimental results demonstrate that the LCMA-PON signal exhibits high robustness over a 25 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) transmission

Prognostic evaluation of branch atheromatous disease in the pons using carotid artery ultrasonography.

BACKGROUND: Branch atheromatous disease is an ischemic stroke, involving occlusion or severe stenosis of the perforating artery, causing neurologic symptoms and serious sequelae. We aimed to investigate initial morphometric and hemodynamic characteristics of the vertebral artery immediately post-onset to predict lesion expanding. METHODS: This case-control study collected demographic, historical, and physical examination data from 44 patients with branch atheromatous disease in the pons at admission. The maximum ischemic pons area and stenosis rate in the basilar artery were calculated using

Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction and Associated Pons Volume in Patients with Wolfram Syndrome.

PURPOSE: Wolfram syndrome is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by childhood onset diabetes mellitus, optic nerve atrophy, diabetes insipidus, hearing impairment, and commonly bladder and bowel dysfunction. We hypothesized that there is an association between a smaller pons, which contains the pontine micturition center, and abnormal lower urinary tract function. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with genetically confirmed Wolfram syndrome attended an annual multidisciplinary research clinic. Subjects underwent noninvasive urodynamic testing and brain magnetic resonance imaging, and com

Characterization of REM-sleep associated ponto-geniculo-occipital waves in the human pons.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Ponto-geniculo-occipital (PGO) waves are phasic pontine, lateral geniculate, and cortical field potentials occurring during and before REM sleep that are proposed to mediate a wide variety of sleep related neural processes. We sought to identify and characterize human PGO waves. DESIGN: We recorded simultaneously from intrapontine depth electrodes and scalp electrodes in a human subject across sleep states. SETTING: Tertiary care neurological and neurosurgical referral center. PATIENTS OR PARTICIPANTS: We studied a patient involved in a study of the clinical effects of uni

A spatially-resolved transcriptional atlas of the murine dorsal pons at single-cell resolution.

The "dorsal pons", or "dorsal pontine tegmentum" (dPnTg), is part of the brainstem. It is a complex, densely packed region whose nuclei are involved in regulating many vital functions. Notable among them are the parabrachial nucleus, the Kölliker Fuse, the Barrington nucleus, the locus coeruleus, and the dorsal, laterodorsal, and ventral tegmental nuclei. In this study, we applied single-nucleus RNA-seq (snRNA-seq) to resolve neuronal subtypes based on their unique transcriptional profiles and then used multiplexed error robust fluorescence in situ hybridization (MERFISH) to map them spatially

Trigeminal Neuropathy Ascribed to a Probable Intrinsic Brainstem Schwannoma of the Pons: A Case Report.

Brainstem schwannomas are very rare, only 11 cases have been reported in the literature so far. We report a small intraparenchymal brainstem schwannoma of the pons, in a 37-year-old female patient who presented with a four-day history of numbness at the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve on the left side of her face. Trigeminal neuralgia was diagnosed, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a small intraparenchymal lesion at the level of the nuclei of the left trigeminal nerve present at the junction between the pons and left brachium pontis. A biopsy wasn't feasible in this smal

Paraoxonase (PON)-1: a brief overview on genetics, structure, polymorphisms and clinical relevance.

Paraoxonase-1 (PON1) is a high-density lipoprotein-associated esterase and is speculated to play a role in several human diseases including diabetes mellitus and atherosclerosis. Low PON1 activity has been associated with increased risk of major cardiovascular events, therefore a variety of studies have been conducted to establish the cardioprotective properties and clinical relevance of PON1. The major aim of this review was to highlight the important studies and to subsequently assess if PON1 has clinical relevance. A review of the literature showed that there is currently insufficient data

Pons ratio as a potential diagnostic biomarker for the detection of growth hormone deficiency in children.

INTRODUCTION: Pituitary insufficiency (PI) needs further research to optimize treatment. Growth hormone deficiency (GHD) is a subtype of PI. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the possible relationship between GHD and the anatomical position of the pons as revealed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the pediatric age group. In the current study, we developed a novel and simple index using MRI that could provide an alternative to other indexes in the classical literature. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Brain MRI and clinical data of 48 children with suspected PI (22 females, 26 male

The midbrain to pons ratio: a simple and specific MRI sign of progressive supranuclear palsy.

OBJECTIVES: MRI-based measurements used to diagnose progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) typically lack pathologic verification and are not easy to use routinely. We aimed to develop in histologically proven disease a simple measure of the midbrain and pons on sagittal MRI to identify PSP. METHODS: Measurements of the midbrain and pontine base on midsagittal T1-weighted MRI were performed in confirmed PSP (n = 12), Parkinson disease (n = 2), and multiple system atrophy (MSA) (n = 7), and in controls (n = 8). Using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, cutoff values were applied to

Damage to the reticulotegmental nucleus of the pons in spinocerebellar ataxia type 1, 2, and 3.

BACKGROUND: The reticulotegmental nucleus of the pons (RTTG) is among the precerebellar nuclei of the human brainstem. Although it represents an important component of the oculomotor circuits crucial for the accuracy of horizontal saccades and the generation of horizontal smooth pursuits, the RTTG has never been considered in CAG repeat or polyglutamine diseases. METHODS: Thick serial sections through the RTTG of 10 patients with spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs) assigned to the CAG repeat or polyglutamine diseases (2 SCA-1 patients, 4 SCA-2 patients, and 4 SCA-3 patients) were stained for neuro

[Resection of neoplasm in fourth ventricle and at the back of pons through cerebellomedullary fissure approach].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the advantage of cerebellomedullary fissure approach to resect the space occupying lesion in the fourth ventricle region and at the back of pons and to discuss the microsurgical skills. METHODS: The craniotomy is through the posterior fossa. To maximize the width of exposure, a long skin incision is made from the occipital protuberance down to the C4-5 level, and a free occipital bone flap is turned. The tonsils of cerebellum are reached by opening the tonsillovermian fissure and then moved upward so as to expose the operating field. Neoplasm in the fourth ventricle

Imaging the trigeminal nerve and pons before and after surgical intervention for trigeminal neuralgia.

OBJECTIVE: To study the various imaging changes occurring in the trigeminal nerve and brainstem in patients before or after trigeminal neuralgia surgery. METHODS: During a 7-year period, 275 patients with trigeminal neuralgia underwent high-resolution, contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the pons during gamma knife radiosurgery. Ninety-seven patients had no previous surgical intervention for trigeminal neuralgia, and 178 patients had undergone one or more previous procedures. Two independent observers, one of whom was blinded to patients' clinical details, reviewed MRI scans

Course of the fiber pathways to pons from parasensory association areas in the rhesus monkey.

The course of the fiber pathways to pons from parasensory association areas in the rhesus monkey was investigated by injection of tritiated amino acids and the technique of autoradiography. Results confirm the projection to pons from parasensory association areas in the temporal, parietal, and occipital lobes and extend these observations to include the posterior parahippocampal gyrus. The findings reveal that the white matter of the posterior limb of the internal capsule above the midpoint of the lateral geniculate nucleus, and at the medial aspect of the lateral geniculate nucleus, comprise
