Effectiveness of rotavirus vaccines in an Australian population: A case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: Two rotavirus vaccines (RV1 and RV5) were included in the publicly funded National Immunisation Program in Australia from July 2007. The programme in Western Australia initially provided RV1 (at ages 2 and 4 months) and then switched to RV5 (at ages 2, 4 and 6 months) from July 2009. This retrospective case-control study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of rotavirus vaccine against laboratory confirmed and notified cases of rotavirus infection among children aged <5 years. METHODS: Case-subjects were identified as vaccine-eligible children (born from 1 May 2007) who were n

Herpes zoster risk after 21 specific cancers: population-based case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Some malignancies are known to be associated with increased risk of herpes zoster, but little is known about how associations between cancer and subsequent zoster risk vary by cancer site, by time since cancer diagnosis, and by age. METHODS: An age-, sex-, calendar time-, and practice-matched case-control study, nested in the broadly UK representative Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) primary care database, was analysed using conditional logistic regression to estimate the association between 21 of the most common specific malignancies and subsequent zoster risk. Quality control of the blood pressure phenotype in the Gaoyou population study.

The Korotkoff approach is the only blood pressure (BP) measurement technique that allows contemporary data to be compared with decades of research. We randomly recruited 4483 people (53.3% women; mean age 52.1 years) from Gaoyou County, Jiangsu Province, China. Nine observers recorded the participants™ BP three times consecutively following Chinese Society of Hypertension guidelines. We assessed the BP phenotype based on five criteria: completeness of readings, percentage of identical BP readings, odd BP readings, end-digit preference and trends in BP from the first to the third reading. The p

Determinants of awareness, treatment and control of hypertension in a Portuguese population.

INTRODUCTION: Hypertension is quantitatively the largest risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and it is highly prevalent in Portugal. It is important to understand which factors explain awareness, treatment and control of hypertension in Portugal, in order to identify barriers to prevention. METHODS: This study consisted of a cross-sectional evaluation of 2310 adults (61.5% women) randomly selected from the population of Porto, Portugal, in 1999-2003. Hypertension was defined as blood pressure > or = 140/90 mmHg and/or being medicated with antihypertensive drugs. RESULTS: The prevalence o

Phytoestrogen treatment induces testis alterations in dogs. Potential use in population control.

Dog overpopulation is considered a human health risk; they are the terrestrial vector of rabies and reservoirs for other human diseases. Surgical neutering and intratesticular injections have been used in male dogs. Physiological and morphological alterations in reproductive organs can be induced by phytoestrogens. Our goal was to evaluate the effect of oral coumestrol on dog ejaculates and testis histology. Two groups of 5 healthy adult dogs were used. One coumestrolcontaining biscuit was given once a week for a 4 week period to the experimental group. Ejaculates were obtained and evaluated.
