Trends in notifiable infectious diseases in China: implications for surveillance and population health policy.

This study aimed to analyse trends in notifiable infectious diseases in China, in their historical context. Both English and Chinese literature was searched and diseases were categorised according to the type of disease or transmission route. Temporal trends of morbidity and mortality rates were calculated for eight major infectious diseases types. Strong government commitment to public health responses and improvements in quality of life has led to the eradication or containment of a wide range of infectious diseases in China. The overall infectious diseases burden experienced a dramatic drop

A Key Comprehensive System for Biobehavioral Surveillance of Populations Disproportionately Affected by HIV (National HIV Behavioral Surveillance): Cross-sectional Survey Study.

BACKGROUND: The National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) is a comprehensive system for biobehavioral surveillance conducted since 2003 in 3 populations disproportionately affected by HIV: gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM); people who inject drugs; and heterosexually active persons at increased risk for HIV infection (HET). This ongoing and systematic collection and analysis of data is needed to identify baseline prevalence of behavioral risk factors and prevention service use, as well as to measure progress toward meeting HIV prevention goals among key populations dis

Evaluation of the implementation of the EWARS Mobile epidemiological surveillance tool in Sudanese refugee camps in Eastern Chad: a retrospective and population-based surveillance study.

BACKGROUND: The escalation of the conflict in Sudan has created a major humanitarian challenge for neighboring countries, especially in the Eastern regions of Chad. This humanitarian setting's health needs are unique in that they are more vulnerable to both outbreak-prone disease and a lack of essential services. To address these challenges, the World Health Organization has supported implementing the Early Warning Alert and Response System (EWARS) Mobile. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the application of the EWARS Mobile epidemiological surveillance tool in Sudanese children's refu

Population estimation in injury surveillance using a quasi-bootstrapping approach with convenience sample data.

BACKGROUND: The National Collegiate Athletic Association Injury Surveillance Program (NCAA ISP) is among the longest-standing sport injury surveillance systems in the world. The NCAA ISP relies on a convenience sample of reporting institutions to estimate population-level injury metrics by scaling reported counts by an inverse school-reporting fraction and a fixed under-reporting correction. We propose a new method for improving population estimates of injury incidence obtained in the NCAA ISP, through a quasi-bootstrapping algorithm that capitalises on the historically archived NCAA ISP data.

Hypospadias prevalence by severity and associated risk factors: A population-based active surveillance analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Hypospadias is one of the most common congenital anomalies. Trends of hypospadias prevalence by severity are not well reported. Most prevalence studies consist of pooled data from different countries or states suffer from low data quality due to inconsistent methodologies, limited variables, and lack of categorization of hypospadias severity. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to examine the prevalence of hypospadias by degrees of severity and associated risk factors using combined data sources from a stable and well-defined population. STUDY DESIGN: The study population

Exploring monitoring strategies for population surveillance of HPV vaccine impact using primary HPV screening.

Australia's cervical screening program transitioned from cytology to HPV-testing with genotyping for HPV16/18 in Dec'2017. We investigated whether program data could be used to monitor HPV vaccination program impact (commenced in 2007) on HPV16/18 prevalence and compared estimates with pre-vaccination benchmark prevalence. Pre-vaccination samples (2005-2008) (n = 1933; WHINURS), from 25 to 64-year-old women had been previously analysed with Linear Array (LA). Post-vaccination samples (2013-2014) (n = 2989; Compass pilot), from 25 to 64-year-old women, were analysed by cobas 4800 (cobas), and b

Surveillance of Listeria monocytogenes: Early Detection, Population Dynamics, and Quasimetagenomic Sequencing during Selective Enrichment.

In this study, we addressed different aspects regarding the implementation of quasimetagenomic sequencing as a hybrid surveillance method in combination with enrichment for early detection of Listeria monocytogenes in the food industry. Different experimental enrichment cultures were used, comprising seven L. monocytogenes strains of different sequence types (STs), with and without a background microbiota community. To assess whether the proportions of the different STs changed over time during enrichment, the growth and population dynamics were assessed using dapE colony sequencing and dapE a

Invasive pneumococcal disease among children in rural Bangladesh: results from a population-based surveillance.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus pneumoniae infection is recognized as a global priority public health problem, and conjugate vaccines have been shown to prevent vaccine-type invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in children. However, better estimates of the disease burden and reliable population-based data on serotype composition are needed for vaccine development and implementation in developing countries. METHODS: We initiated a population-based surveillance in the rural Bangladesh community of Mirzapur, covering a population of approximately 144,000. Village health care workers made weekly visits

Surveillance of premalignant gastric cardia lesions: A population-based prospective cohort study in China.

In our study, we aimed to assess the long-term risk of gastric cardia adenocarcinoma (GCA) for patients with different histological cardia lesions to inform future guidelines for GCA screening in China. We conducted a population-based prospective study among 9740 subjects who underwent upper endoscopy screening during 2005 to 2009 and followed until December 2017. Cumulative incidence and mortality rates of GCA were calculated by the baseline histological diagnoses, and the hazard ratios (HRs), overall and by age and sex, were analyzed by Cox proportional hazards models. During a median follow

Venous Duplex Ultrasound Surveillance in the Neurosurgical Population: A Single-Center Quality Improvement Initiative.

BACKGROUND: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) represents a significant source of morbidity and mortality in the inpatient population and is considered a leading preventable cause of death among inpatients. Neurosurgical inpatients are of particular interest because of the greater rates of immobility, steroid use, and potential consequences of postoperative hemorrhage. A consensus protocol for VTE screening in this population has not yet been developed, and institutional protocols vary widely. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of lower extremity venous duplex ultrasonography (VDUS) usage

Initial findings from a novel population-based child mortality surveillance approach: a descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: Sub-Saharan Africa and south Asia contributed 81% of 5·9 million under-5 deaths and 77% of 2·6 million stillbirths worldwide in 2015. Vital registration and verbal autopsy data are mainstays for the estimation of leading causes of death, but both are non-specific and focus on a single underlying cause. We aimed to provide granular data on the contributory causes of death in stillborn fetuses and in deceased neonates and children younger than 5 years, to inform child mortality prevention efforts. METHODS: The Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) Network was e
