This study aimed to investigate the interactive effect of dietary threonine (i.e., 100, 110, and 120%) and low and high dietary potassium (i.e., 0.85 and 0.94% of diet) on the performance, immune response, blood metabolites, carcass traits, and jejunum morphology of broiler chickens in Iran. In a completely randomized design, 300 1-day-old broiler chicks (Ross 308) were assigned to one of six dietary treatments with a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement. Broiler chicken growth performance, blood metabolite concentration, jejunum morphology, and antibody titter against Newcastle disease and influenza v

The aim of this mini review is to provide an overview regarding the role of inwardly rectifying potassium channel 4.1 (Kir4.1)/Kir5.1 in regulating renal K+ excretion. Deletion of Kir4.1 in the kidney inhibited thiazide-sensitive NaCl cotransporter (NCC) activity in the distal convoluted tubule (DCT) and slightly suppressed Na-K-2Cl cotransporter (NKCC2) function in the thick ascending limb (TAL). Moreover, increased dietary K+ intake inhibited, whereas decreased dietary K+ intake stimulated, the basolateral potassium channel (a Kir4.1/Kir5.1 heterotetramer) in the DCT. The alteration of basol

1. Dietary magnesium deficiency is commonly associated with significant potassium depletion although the mechanisms responsible are unknown. Because the kidney has an important role in both magnesium and potassium homeostasis, clearance and micropuncture experiments were performed on thyroparathyroidectomized magnesium-deficient, normal and hypermagnesaemic rats to study the effect of body magnesium status on renal potassium handling. 2. Dietary magnesium restriction that reduced total-body magnesium by 30% did not alter renal potassium excretion despite a 10% reduction in total-body potassium

Patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD) face severe dietary potassium restrictions, reducing their quality of life (QOL) and potentially worsening their prognosis. Sodium zirconium cyclosilicate (SZC) is a novel selective potassium binder that lowers potassium levels, with minimal effects on other electrolytes. The Y-QOL study will evaluate whether SZC can improve QOL by easing the burden of dietary restrictions. This 8-week, multicenter, randomized, parallel-group, open-label trial will enroll 200 outpatients with hyperkalemia (potassium level 5.5-6.4 mEq/L after a 2-day inter-dialytic interval

Kir4.1 in the distal convoluted tubule plays a key role in sensing plasma potassium and in modulating the thiazide-sensitive sodium-chloride cotransporter (NCC). Here we tested whether dietary potassium intake modulates Kir4.1 and whether this is essential for mediating the effect of potassium diet on NCC. High potassium intake inhibited the basolateral 40 pS potassium channel (a Kir4.1/5.1 heterotetramer) in the distal convoluted tubule, decreased basolateral potassium conductance, and depolarized the distal convoluted tubule membrane in Kcnj10flox/flox mice, herein referred to as control mic

BACKGROUND: Abnormal plasma potassium levels are not uncommon in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. Here, we implemented a continuous quality improvement (CQI) approach that mainly focused on dietary management to improve potassium control in PD patients.
METHODS: All clinically stable patients who visited the PD clinic monthly were included in this study. A CQI team that included nephrologists, primary nurses, dietician, patients, and their family members was organized, and it monitored patients for 6 months. Patients were asked to provide their dialysis records and 3-day dietary records at

Hypertension is the leading contributor to premature death and disability in the world. Genetic susceptibility and high dietary salt (NaCl) consumption have long been considered to be the primary culprits but growing evidence indicates that low dietary potassium consumption has an equally important role. Although the underlying mechanisms are complex and multifactorial, the potassium switch signalling mechanism in the kidney distal convoluted tubule represents a crucial pathway with implications for preventing and treating hypertension. Comprising a Kir4.1 and Kir5.1 channel potassium-sensing

Traditional dietary guidelines for patients with kidney disease recommend restriction of plant foods due to concerns about hyperkalemia and associated adverse events. Studies conducted over several decades have shown that the basis for these guidelines does not match the evidence. Serum potassium levels can be elevated in patients with reduced kidney function after consumption of foods with potassium-based additives or with highly concentrated potassium content such as juices, dried fruit, or purees. However, plant foods may have certain qualities that may blunt potassium retention including t

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are at increased cardiovascular risk. Rather than either sodium or potassium intake alone, the ratio of urinary sodium-to-potassium excretion has been introduced as a simple and useful indicator of diet quality and a more reliable index of cardiovascular risk assessment. We assessed the clinical impact of sodium-to-potassium ratio as a marker of cardiovascular health in patients with RA.
METHOD: Sodium and potassium intake were assessed from 24-h urine samples, and urinary sodium-to-potassium ratio was calculated in patients wit

Adherence to fluid restrictions and dietary and medication guidelines is important for adequate management of hemodialysis (HD) patients. This study aimed at assessing the factors suggestive of adherence in uremic patients on HD. Two hundred HD patients were recruited by census method. Data on blood urea nitrogen (BUN), serum potassium and phosphate levels, and interdialytic weight gain (IWG) were collected from medical records and analyzed. Most of the patients (56%) did not adhere to fluid restrictions. Nonadherence to phosphate, potassium, and BUN levels was 25.5%, 5.5%, and 4.5%, respectiv

Restricting dietary sodium promotes sodium appetite in rats. Prolonged sodium restriction increases plasma potassium (pK), and elevated pK is largely responsible for a concurrent increase in aldosterone, which helps promote sodium appetite. In addition to increasing aldosterone, we hypothesized that elevated potassium directly influences the brain to promote sodium appetite. To test this, we restricted dietary potassium in sodium-deprived rats. Potassium restriction reduced pK and blunted the increase in aldosterone caused by sodium deprivation, but did not prevent sodium appetite or the activ

BACKGROUND: Dietary management of hyperkalaemia in chronic kidney disease has traditionally focused on potassium restriction. However, contemporary renal nutrition practice increasingly requires dietitians to balance biochemical safety with nutritional adequacy, dietary quality, treatment burden, and patient wellbeing. Limited empirical evidence has examined how renal dietitians reason through these competing priorities in routine practice.
OBJECTIVE: To explore how renal dietitians approach dietary hyperkalaemia management in chronic kidney disease and to examine the professional reasoning u

Gitelman's (GS) and Bartter's (BS) syndromes are rare, inherited autosomal recessive tubulopathies characterized by hypokalemia, metabolic alkalosis, renal sodium, chloride, and potassium and magnesium-wasting. While the treatment based on potassium, sodium, chloride, and magnesium supplementation in addition to other pharmacologic options are widely established, recommendations about the dietary approach to GS and BS still remain generic. In this review we focus on the dietary strategies to increase sodium, potassium, and magnesium intake in GS and BS patients. Potassium and magnesium-rich fo

The regulation of blood pressure (BP) is subject to the influence of various exogenous factors, such as a nutritional origin. It is now well established that excess sodium has a deleterious hypertensive effect. On the other hand, the beneficial impact of dietary potassium remains relatively under-reported, despite the fact that this cation has been shown to have a significant antihypertensive effect and to help reduce the risk of major cardiovascular (CV) events. This article provides an up-to-date summary of the scientific data on the effects of dietary potassium on BP and CV morbidity and mo

Epidemiological and clinical studies suggest that low dietary potassium intake may have an important role in determining the development of diseases such as hypertension, and perhaps even stomach cancer, and that increased potassium intake may have beneficial effects in several other conditions. Dietary adjustment or active potassium supplementation has been suggested as a natural, less costly and safe method of increasing potassium levels, although active supplementation with tablets or solutions is not recommended in healthy people with normal serum potassium levels. However, increasing diet

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: Maintaining adequate ratios of sodium-to-potassium requires heart failure patients to be adherent to recommended dietary guidelines. A potential deterrent to adherence is poor cognitive functioning. The aims of this study were to (1) estimate dietary sodium and potassium intake and sodium-to-potassium ratios and (2) examine the associations between cognitive functioning and sodium-to-potassium ratios.
BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment may impact levels of adherence and subsequently sodium-to-potassium ratios; however, little is known about the relationship of cognitive fun

Hypokalemia is a prominent feature of Gitelman syndrome and a common side effect of thiazide use in the treatment of hypertension. It is widely recognized that genetic or pharmacological inhibition of the renal thiazide-sensitive sodium-chloride cotransporter (NCC) initiates the potentially severe renal potassium loss observed in these settings. Surprisingly, hypokalemia has not been detected in NCC (-/-) mice maintained on normal rodent diets (Schultheis PJ, Lorenz JN, Meneton P, Nieman ML, Riddle TM, Flagella M, Duffy JJ, Doetschman T, Miller ML, and Shull GE. This study aimed to explore the relationship between dietary electrolyte intake and the prevalence of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) subtypes. Our analysis included 19 914 pregnant women from the Tohoku Medical Megabank Project Birth and Three-Generation Cohort Study. A food frequency questionnaire was used to estimate dietary calcium, potassium, sodium, and magnesium intakes. HDP was determined based on the medical records during regular antenatal care. Logistic regression analysis assessed the relationship between dietary electrolytes intake quintiles, and HDP subtypes with adjust

Hyperkalemia is a potentially life-threatening condition, particularly in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Potassium-enriched salt substitutes are increasingly promoted as a dietary intervention for hypertension, but may pose risks in patients with impaired renal function. We report the case of an 88-year-old male with CKD who developed asymptomatic but marked hyperkalemia (7.5 mEq/L) during hospitalization for osteomyelitis. The patient had unknowingly consumed a potassium-enriched salt substitute brought in by his family to improve the taste of hospital meals. His renal function h
