Potentially Inappropriate Medication Use Following Hospital Discharge Among Medicare Beneficiaries.

OBJECTIVES: Medicare beneficiaries 65 years and older are susceptible to receiving potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs), for which the risks outweigh the benefits. Unlike stand-alone Part D prescription drug plans serving traditional Medicare (TM) beneficiaries, Medicare Advantage (MA) plans have a financial incentive to improve transitional care following hospitalization and reduce PIM use in order to avoid costly adverse drug events. This study examined how changes in PIM use following hospitalization differed between TM and MA. STUDY DESIGN: This observational study analyzed nation

Factors associated with potentially inappropriate medication use, medication underuse and overuse in older adults in the German National Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Effectively identifying individuals exposed to drug underuse, overuse and potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) in older adults is essential for minimizing preventable drug-related harms. METHODS: We analysed data from 54,296 individuals aged 60-74 years from the German National Cohort (NAKO). We assessed the frequency of PIM, untreated conditions (medication and vaccination underuse) and medications without indication (overuse) utilizing the Fit fOR The Aged (FORTA) list. Factors associated with PIM, medication overuse and underuse were identified by multivariable logistic r

Geographic Variation in Top-10 Prescribed Medicines and Potentially Inappropriate Medication in Portugal: An Ecological Study of 2.2 Million Older Adults.

Multiple medication intake by older adults is considered a serious public health concern since it is associated with increased risk of adverse drug reactions and potentially inappropriate medication (PIM). This study described the top-10 prescribed active substances considering geographical distribution and PIM prescription in older adults. A cross-sectional ecological study using data on the active substances prescribed to people aged 65 years or older during 2020 was conducted. Information on active substances and the respective defined daily doses (DDD) stratified by age group, sex and regi

Anticholinergic Drug Use in Elderly Patients: Compliance with STOPP-START and BEERS Criteria in Spain-A Descriptive Study.

INTRODUCTION: Dementia is the most prevalent neurodegenerative disorder. Several studies have demonstrated an association between anticholinergic drug use and an increased risk of cognitive and physical impairment. However, anticholinergic drugs are commonly prescribed for various clinical conditions, and their cumulative effects, referred to as anticholinergic burden, can contribute to cognitive decline and dementia. Although the causal relationship remains inconclusive, a higher anticholinergic burden is linked to a greater risk of cognitive deterioration. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to asse
