The Canadian poultry industry generates large quantities of poultry litter rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and mineral constituents, creating both environmental challenges and opportunities for resource recovery. Pyrolysis has emerged as a promising pathway to valorize poultry litter into biochar, enabling waste stabilization, nutrient management, and carbon sequestration. This review critically synthesizes around 160 studies to evaluate how feedstock properties and pyrolysis conditions govern the physicochemical characteristics and functional performance of poultry litter-derived biocha

AIM: The aim of this study was to characterize virulent Escherichia coli isolated from different poultry species and poultry farm workers using enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus-polymerase chain reaction (ERIC-PCR) genotyping.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fecal swabs from different poultry species (n=150) and poultry farm workers (n=15) were analyzed for E. coli and screened for virulence genes (stx1, stx2, eaeA, and hlyA) by multiplex PCR. Virulent E. coli was serotyped based on their "O" antigen and then genotyped using ERIC-PCR.
RESULTS: A total of 134 E. coli isolates (122/150 fr

Five H3N2 avian influenza viruses (AIVs) were isolated from live poultry markets (LPMs) and poultry slaughterhouses in Shanghai, China in 2013. All viruses were characterized by whole-genome sequencing with subsequent genetic comparison and phylogenetic analysis. The hemagglutinin cleavage site of all viruses indicated that the five strains were low-pathogenic AIVs. Phylogenetic analysis of all eight viral genes showed that the five H3N2 viruses clustered in the Eurasian lineage of influenza viruses. The eight genes showed evidence of reassortment events between these H3 subtype viruses and ot

Unregulated use of antibiotics has led to selection pressure in many pathogens, leading to the development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), one of the leading causes of death worldwide. The effect of AMR in humans as well as all the species of animals has been observed. Escherichia coli (E. coli), a gram-negative bacterium, colonizes in the gastrointestinal tract and maintains a mutually beneficial relationship with the host. Most of the E. coli strains are harmless and inhabit the intestinal tract, but there are certain pathogenic strains, which cause infections both in humans and animals,

Nanotechnology has emerged as a transformative tool in animal production, offering novel strategies to enhance productivity, health, and product quality. Among trace elements, selenium (Se) plays an essential role in antioxidant defence, immune regulation, and redox balance through its incorporation into selenoproteins. Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs), synthesized via chemical, physical, or biological methods, have shown superior bioavailability, stability, and lower toxicity compared to traditional organic and inorganic selenium forms. This review explores the synthesis, physicochemical proper

Salmonella can cause significant infections in poultry, including fowl typhoid and pullorum disease, while Non-Typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) causes mild to severe diarrheal diseases and is potentially zoonotic. NTS, a significant cause of gastroenteritis in humans, is often underestimated in developing countries, where contaminated chicken or poultry products are the main drivers of its spread. Various whole-cell killed, live-attenuated, or subunit vaccines are available for poultry salmonellosis. Poultry producers prefer killed vaccines owing to their safety and minimal public health risks. Howe

Since the early 2000s, skeletal effects, specifically enterococcal spondylitis, related to pathogenic Enterococcus cecorum (EC), have been observed in older broiler chicken flocks. This skeletal involvement has typically been associated with persistent EC infections in the free thoracic vertebrae leading to paralysis. However, the emergence of virulent EC in young broiler chicken flocks causing clinical septicemia requires further investigation. The purpose of this review is to provide an update on EC-related research and pending industry needs.

Cochlosoma anatis is a flagellated protozoan parasite classified in the Trichomonadidae family and is the causative agent of cochlosomiasis, an enteric disease of turkeys, waterfowl, and other wild birds. Cochlosomiasis symptoms largely consist of watery diarrhea, lethargic birds, depressed weight gain, and widespread flock morbidity causing flock nonuniformity. The known distribution of C. anatis is centered around areas of turkey production farms in the southeast United States, e.g., North Carolina, Missouri and Arkansas, but has been reported in other states and some other countries. Diagno

Salmonella infection is an acute and systemic disease of poultry, primarily affecting young birds. The mortality rate of chicken within one week of age can reach up to 40 %. Surviving individuals may become carriers of the bacteria, leading to latent infections that can result in bacterial residues in meat and egg products, posing serious threats to human food safety and health. Antibiotic therapy is one of the most conventional treatments for Salmonella infections in birds. However, the current abuse of antibiotics has accelerated the mutation of pathogenic bacteria to generate antibiotic-res

Gallibacterium anatis (G. anatis), a member of the Pasteurellaceae family, normally inhabits the upper respiratory and lower genital tracts of poultry. However, under certain circumstances of immunosuppression, co-infection (especially with Escherichia coli or Mycoplasma), or various stressors, G. anatis caused respiratory, reproductive, and systemic diseases. Infection with G. anatis has emerged in different countries worldwide. The bacterium affects mainly chickens; however, other species of domestic and wild birds may get infected. Horizontal, vertical, and venereal routes of G. anatis infe

The poultry sector is facing infections from Salmonella, Campylobacter, Listeria and Staphylococcus spp., and Escherichia coli, that have developed multidrug resistance aptitude. Antibiotics cause disturbances in the balance of normal microbiota leading to dysbiosis, immunosuppression, and the development of secondary infections. Bacteriophages have been reported to lower the colonization of Salmonella and Campylobacter in poultry. The specificity of bacteriophages is greater than that of antibiotics and can be used as a cocktail for enhanced antibacterial activity. Specie-specific phages have

BACKGROUND: Allergy to poultry meat is only rarely covered in science. The few reports are usually related to patients allergic to eggs or bird feathers.
OBJECTIVE: Two patients with a clear history of monovalent, ingestive allergy to chicken and turkey meat, without other food allergies, were analysed. The relevant allergens were to be identified by immunoblotting.
METHODS: Both patients were evaluated with skin tests and specific IgE determination (CAP). Allergens were identified by SDS-PAGE and immunoblotting. Cross-reactivity of chicken and turkey meat was examined by IgE inhibition expe

Botulism was diagnosed clinically in grazing cattle on three closely sited dairy farms. The evidence suggests that the source of the toxin was poultry carcases containing types C and D Clostridium botulinum. These organism were also found in the alimentary tract of affected animals. Silage is suspected as having acted as a vehicle for the organisms and, or, toxins in cases which occurred later in housed cattle on one of the farms.

The review was written in attempt to summarize some aspects of current poultry viral vaccine production. Problems associated with the production of safe and effective viral vaccines were described. Embryonated eggs or CEF are used in veterinary medical research and in the production of viral vaccines owing to their advantages as a suitable substrate for a wide range of viruses.

During an epidemiological study of salmonellosis in free-range village poultry, "Salmonella hirschfeldii" (invalid) was isolated from four birds in a village on the outskirts of the city of Ibadan, Nigeria. This is the first report of an isolation of "S. hirschfeldii" in poultry in Nigeria. The same organism was found in an adult male in the village. The simultaneous isolation of this serotype from poultry and man is significant because of the complex epidemiological pattern of salmonella infections in the tropical environment. It was not possible to determine whether the infection was transmi

Eight different serotypes of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae were isolated from 39 outbreaks of erysipelas in poultry, serotypes 1, 5, 6 and 9 being most prevalent. More than one serotype was demonstrated in five outbreaks. Only White Leghorns were affected as far as erysipelas in chickens is concerned, and 94% of the flocks were kept on sloping wire floors of the Pennsylvania system. No relationship between serotype, host predilection and virulence was observed, nor was there a seasonal distribution. The epidemiological and preventive aspects of the present findings are discussed.
