BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is widely distributed in Morocco where its geographical range and incidence are related to environmental factors. This study aimed to examine the impact of several factors on the distribution of CL in Boulemane Province, which is characterized by several microclimates, and to identify the Leishmania species circulating in these areas.
METHODS: Ordinary least squares regression (OLSR) analysis was performed to study the impact of poverty, vulnerability, population density, urbanization and bioclimatic factors on the distribution of CL in this province.

BACKGROUND: Poverty has been implicated as a challenge in the control of the current Ebola outbreak in West Africa. Although disparities between affected countries have been appreciated, disparities within West African countries have not been investigated as drivers of Ebola transmission. To quantify the role that poverty plays in the transmission of Ebola, we analyzed heterogeneity of Ebola incidence and transmission factors among over 300 communities, categorized by socioeconomic status (SES), within Montserrado County, Liberia.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We evaluated 4,437 Ebola cases

PURPOSE: Breast cancer characteristics and outcomes vary by tumor subtype, poverty, race, and geography. Persistent poverty (> 20% residents in poverty for 30+ years) has been associated with breast cancer risk, but whether associations differ by subtype is unknown. We examined subtype-specific breast cancer incidence by persistent poverty, stratified by rurality and race.
METHODS: Using county-level Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results data from 2017 to 2021 (excluding 2020), we calculated Luminal A, Luminal B, HER2-enriched, and triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) incidence rates. W

BACKGROUND: To determine if outdoor advertising density for non-alcoholic drinks, food, tobacco products, and alcohol, is associated with neighborhood poverty or other Census-level characteristics in New York City (NYC).
METHODS: From June - July of 2015, photographs were taken of all street-level, stationary outdoor advertising (posters, stickers, decals, etc.) for consumable products in a sample of 953 NYC retail-dense street segments. Density of product images was analyzed by neighborhood poverty level and other characteristics using multivariate negative-binomial regression.
RESULTS: A t

Rapid urbanization in the developing world has exacerbated the crisis of poor sanitation within sprawling informal settlements. Container-Based Sanitation (CBS) has emerged as a promising, alternative solution designed to fill these critical infrastructural deficits where conventional sewage systems are absent. Despite its apparent potential, there is a recognized gap in the contextual understanding of CBS implementation, particularly concerning the influence of local social and political dynamics, which ultimately hinders effective scale and sustainable programming. This qualitative study aim

BACKGROUND: Stigma continues to be a major barrier to tuberculosis (TB) control particularly in urban populations. Stigma can influence health seeking behaviour and affect adherence to TB treatment, yet few studies have examined TB related stigma and associated factors in Uganda. This study was therefore conducted to determine the level of stigma and associated factors among TB patients in an urban setting in Kampala, Uganda.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Makindye division, Kampala among 204 patients with TB aged 18 years and above. Data were collected on socio-demographic

Vitamin A deficiency is widely prevalent amongst children in India. The present work was designed to be an intervention study with nutrient fortified biscuits to ameliorate the micronutrient status of adolescent girls coming from a low socio-economic background. Baseline data on serum total proteins and vitamin A levels of 111 adolescent girls (10-15 years) studying in a government school in Jaipur city, India, were collected. The mean serum total proteins of the subjects of the present study was 6.80 +/- 0.726 g%. A very high percentage of the adolescent girls (90.1%) had serum total proteins

AIM: To determine the possibility of leptospirosis among patients from urban slums presenting with febrile illness during monsoon and post-monsoon season.
METHODS: Evidence of leptospirosis in 180 patients with febrile illness was determined by looking for presence of immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies by leptospiral IgM enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The test was carried out on 160 Widal test negative and 20 Widal test positive sera received from febrile patients during June to September 2001.
RESULTS: Twenty-seven out of 180 (15%) sera were positive for leptospiral IgM antibodie

Over half of urban populations in Sub-Saharan Africa live in deprived urban neighbourhoods, where individuals have a high risk of TB and often unfavourable outcomes. We summarise key insights from recent workshops held in Freetown (Sierra Leone) and Maputo (Mozambique), emphasising an urgent need for more coherent TB control. Encouragingly, ad-hoc solutions are being piloted in these settings, focussing on targeted TB screening with portable and accessible tests. Amid a decline in aid funding, we argue that a more focused approach to targeting TB hotspots, leveraging affordable mobile technolo

BACKGROUND: Typhoid fever, or enteric fever, is a highly fatal infectious disease that affects over 9 million people worldwide each year, resulting in more than 110,000 deaths. Reduction in the burden of typhoid in low-income countries is crucial for public health and requires the implementation of feasible water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) interventions, especially in densely populated urban slums.
OBJECTIVE: In this study, conducted in Mirpur, Bangladesh, we aimed to assess the association between household WASH status and typhoid risk in a training subpopulation of a large prospective

INTRODUCTION: Mental health problems rank among the leading causes of disability among young people globally. Young people growing up in urban slums are exposed to adverse childhood experiences, violence, and other adversities. There is limited research on how exposure to violence and adverse life events influence adolescents' mental health in urban poor settings. This study examines the associations between exposure to violence, adverse life events and self-reported depression in the slums of Nairobi.
METHODS: This study draws on data collected from 2106 adolescent girls aged 12-19 years who

PURPOSE: During World War II, scientific studies were conducted in the Jewish ghetto of Warsaw (Poland). This research, focusing on hunger-induced disease, was embedded in circumstances of omnipresent hunger and starvation. Ophthalmologist Szymon Fajgenblat (1900-1944) was one of the involved physicians and wrote a manuscript about ophthalmological changes during starvation. The background and the findings of his research are discussed in this article.
METHODS: Literature and archival research.
RESULTS: The Warsaw ghetto existed from 1941 to 1943 until it was destroyed, just like most of its

BACKGROUND: Human movement is likely an important risk factor for environmentally-transmitted pathogens. While epidemiologic studies have traditionally focused on household risk factors, individual movement data could provide critical additional information about risk of exposure to such pathogens. We conducted global positioning system (GPS) tracking of urban slum residents to quantify their fine-scale movement patterns and evaluate their exposures to environmental sources of leptospirosis transmission.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We recruited participants from an ongoing cohort study in

The aims of this project were to map the location and density of gambling machines in Britain; to explore whether geographic areas with higher densities of machines exist and to examine the socio-economic characteristics of these areas relative to others. Using geospatial analysis of premises records, we identified 8861 Machine Zones which were areas with a 400 meter radius around gambling machine venue and 384 High Density Machine Zones (HDMZ) with 1 or more gambling machine per hectare. There was a significant correlation between machine density and socio-economic deprivation. HDMZs had grea

Rabies causes 59,000 human deaths annually in over 150 countries. Mass dog vaccination (MDV) is key to controlling dog rabies, requiring 70% coverage in the susceptible dog population to eliminate rabies deaths. MDV campaigns must achieve geographical homogeneity of coverage. Although rabies elimination is feasible, operation challenges exist, especially in hard-to-reach areas. We conducted geospatial modelling to identify geographical factors affecting MDV success in terms of campaign completeness and vaccination coverage across 25 districts in south-eastern Tanzania. From October 2016 to Jan
