Pressure ulcer development in patients treated for acute ischaemic stroke.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of pressure ulcers (PUs) in patients treated for acute ischaemic stroke (AIS) and to evaluate comorbid/confounding factors. METHOD: The study included patients treated for AIS who were divided into three treatment groups: those receiving intravenous tissue plasminogen activator therapy (tPA); patients receiving mechanical thrombectomy (MT); and those receiving both tPA and MT. PUs were classified according to the international classification system and factors that may influence their development were investigated. RESULTS: A to

Pressure ulcer healing promoted by adequate protein intake in rats.

The effect of protein intake on rat pressure ulcer healing was evaluated. One hundred rats were numbered according to body weight and then they were randomly divided into 4 groups (n=25) using the random number table. After rat models of stage II pressure ulcer were established, they were fed with feed containing different protein levels (10, 15, 20 and 25%). Healing time, pressure ulcer area, body weight, albumin (ALB) and hemoglobin (Hb) levels among groups were compared. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining was also performed to observe pressure ulcer tissue structure. In the healing proces

The use of sensory electrical stimulation for pressure ulcer prevention.

Pressure ulcer prevention is critically important for many people with reduced mobility. The authors investigated whether sensory (sub-motor-threshold) electrical stimulation (ES) may provide a convenient preventive intervention. A double-blinded, repeated measures study design was used to test the hypothesis that repeated use of sensory surface ES improves tissue health status in individuals with motor paralysis. Six adult males with complete spinal cord injury (SCI) were randomly assigned to treatment or control groups. The treatment group received the ES intervention, whereas the control gr

Pressure ulcer prevention and treatment practices in inpatient rehabilitation facilities.

Although many strategies have been developed to prevent pressure ulcers, they remain a significant healthcare problem, particularly for chronically ill patients in rehabilitation facilities. This study describes self-reported pressure ulcer prevention and treatment practices in rehabilitation facilities. Surveys were sent to all 52 licensed inpatient rehabilitation facilities in Missouri; the response rate was 76.9%. Less than 30% of the facilities used inexpensive nursing interventions such as keeping the head of a patient's bed at or below a level of 30 degrees. Informally established protoc

Use of Pressurease and Airform mattresses in pressure ulcer care.

Large cell dynamic air mattresses are effective in the prevention of pressure ulcers but they still have inherent problems, e.g. the ability of the mattresses to move patients along the mattress through the inflation and deflation of the cells. Also, there have been reports that the inflation and deflation of cells can cause motion sickness. This article reviews two mattresses from Sareo Healthcare Ltd: a static system, Pressurease; and a unique dynamic system, Airform. These two systems offer a cost-effective and clinically effective method of pressure ulcer prevention and therapy.

Comparison of quantitative methodologies to define chronic pressure ulcer measurements.

The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare various methodologies of measuring the characteristics of pressure ulcers. This prospective, four-week, follow-up study consisted of 20 patients, of whom 17 completed the study. Each patient had at least one full-thickness pressure ulcer (surface area between 1.2 and 61.6 cm2) that had been present for at least four weeks. The ulcers were assessed weekly for four weeks using the following techniques: direct measurement (length, width, and depth), tracing of the ulcer outline onto transparent material, standard photography, and volume meas

Predictors of Pressure Ulcer Recurrence and Complications after Flap Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Pressure ulcers impose a significant healthcare burden on both the individual and societal level. The gold standard for treatment is flap reconstruction, which historically has high complication and recurrence rates. The aim of our study was to determine factors associated with complications and recurrence in our large patient population. METHODS: Retrospective chart review of patients who underwent muscle, myocutaneous, or fasciocutaneous flaps from January 2010 to July 2022 for pressure ulcer reconstruction at our tertiary academic institution. Demographic and outcome data were

Neurovascular Response to Pressure in Patients With Diabetic Foot Ulcer.

Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is a problem worldwide, and prevention is crucial. We hypothesized that the inability of the skin to respond to pressure is involved in DFU pathogenesis and could be an important predictive factor to take into account. We included 29 patients with DFU and 30 patients with type 2 diabetes without DFU. Neuropathy and skin blood flow at rest were assessed in response to acetylcholine, sodium nitroprusside, local heating (42°C), and to nonnoxious locally applied pressure. Results were compared with those obtained from 10 healthy age-matched control subjects. Vasodilatatio

Sciatic neuropathy caused by a pressure ulcer: A case report.

RATIONALE: Sciatic neuropathy has various causes; however, cases in which a pressure ulcer led to sciatic neuropathy have not been reported to date. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 33-year-old woman with no pre-existing mobility problems visited our department with the chief complaint of an extensive pressure ulcer and necrosis in her right buttock. She had a medical history of being bedridden for 2 days while in a coma due to a drug overdose 2 months previously. Physical examination revealed loss of sensation and foot drop in the right foot. DIAGNOSIS: Physical examination, magnetic resonance imaging,

Marjolin's Ulcer Complicating a Pressure Sore: The Clock is Ticking.

BACKGROUND: Malignant degeneration in any chronic wound is termed a Marjolin's ulcer (MU). The overall metastatic rate of MU is approximately 27.5%. However, the prognosis of MU specific to pressure sores is poor, with a reported metastatic rate of 61%. This is due to insidious, asymptomatic malignant degeneration, a lack of healthcare provider awareness, and, ultimately, delayed management. CASE REPORT: An 85-year-old white male was noted by his wound-care nurse to have a rapidly developing growth on his lower back over a period of 4 months. There was history of a non-healing, progressive pr

The effects of polarized light therapy in pressure ulcer healing.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Neglecting polarized light as an adjuvant therapy for pressure ulcers and methodology distinctions in the trials engaging polarized light are the reasons for many dilemmas and contradictions. The aim of this study was to establish the effects of polarized light therapy in pressure ulcer healing. METHODS: This prospective randomized single-blind study involved 40 patients with stage I-III of pressure ulcer. The patients in the experimental group (E) were subjected, besides polarized light therapy, to standard wound cleaning and dressing. Standard wound cleaning and dressing wer

Nurses' attitudes, behaviours and perceived barriers towards pressure ulcer prevention.

BACKGROUND: Pressure ulcers are not a plague of modern man; they have been known to exist since ancient Egyptian times. However, despite the increasing expenditure on pressure ulcer prevention, pressure ulcers remain a major health care problem. Although nurses do not have the sole responsibility for pressure ulcer prevention, nurses have a unique opportunity to have a significant impact on this problem. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The specific aims of the study were to identify: * Staff nurses' attitudes towards pressure ulcer prevention. * The behaviour of staff nurses' in relation to pressure ulc

Pressure ulcers in trauma patients with suspected spine injury: a prospective cohort study with emphasis on device-related pressure ulcers.

Of all patients in a hospital environment, trauma patients may be particularly at risk for developing (device-related) pressure ulcers (PUs), because of their traumatic injuries, immobility, and exposure to immobilizing and medical devices. Studies on device-related PUs are scarce. With this study, the incidence and characteristics of PUs and the proportion of PUs that are related to devices in adult trauma patients with suspected spinal injury were described. From January-December 2013, 254 trauma patients were visited every 2 days for skin assessment. The overall incidence of PUs was 28·3% (
