Folic acid and prevention of spina bifida and anencephaly. 10 years after the U.S. Public Health Service recommendation.

In September 1992, the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) recommended that all women capable of becoming pregnant should consume 400 microg of folic acid/day on an ongoing basis to reduce their risk for having a pregnancy affected by spina bifida and anencephaly (i.e., neural tube defects [NTDs]). The recommendation was preceded a year earlier by a CDC recommendation for women at high risk (i.e., those women who have had an earlier pregnancy affected by an NTD). The 1991 CDC recommendation stated that women at high risk should plan subsequent pregnancies and consume 4,000 microg/day of folic a

Variation in tertiary prevention and health service utilization among the elderly: the role of urban-rural residence and supplemental insurance.

OBJECTIVES: Tertiary prevention seeks to reduce chronic disease progression and illness-related dysfunction. Using the Aday-Andersen model, we evaluated the impact of predisposing, need, and enabling factors on tertiary prevention, hypothesizing that urban-rural geographic differences in delivery would be detected. METHODS: A population-based telephone survey was conducted evaluating six common chronic indicator conditions: arthritis (n = 488), hypertension (n = 414), cardiac disease (n = 185), diabetes mellitus (n = 125), peptic ulcer disease (n = 125), and chronic obstructive pulmonary dise

Does mailing unsolicited HPV self-sampling kits to women overdue for cervical cancer screening impact uptake of other preventive health services in a United States integrated delivery system?

Women overdue for cervical cancer screening often have other preventive care gaps. We examined whether mailing unsolicited human papillomavirus (HPV) self-sampling kits to increase cervical cancer screening impacted receipt of other preventive services women were due for: mammography, colorectal cancer (CRC) screening, influenza vaccination, depression screening, and diabetic HbA1c monitoring. From 2014 to 2016, 16,590 underscreened women were randomized to receive a mailed kit or usual care Pap reminders within Kaiser Permanente Washington. We used logistic regression to estimate odds ratios

Emerging information technologies across the autism service and prevention continuum: a narrative review of screening, diagnosis, intervention, and health equity.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a major global public-health concern, yet timely identification and support remain difficult to access for many families, especially in rural, low-resource, and otherwise underserved settings. Emerging information technologies have been proposed as tools for narrowing this service gap. These include artificial intelligence (AI), wearable sensors, and the Internet of Things, mobile health applications and digital therapeutics, telehealth, immersive virtual and augmented reality, social robotics, and large language models. This narrative review organizes the evi

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) remain the leading cause of death in the United States, disproportionately impacting veterans and posing significant risks to active duty service members (ADSMs). These challenges threaten both long-term health outcomes and operational readiness. In response, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA, often referred to as the VA) and the DoD launched an innovative initiative within the Veterans Affairs Virtual Medical Center (VMC): the Performance, Health, and Wellness Center (PHWC). Bringing subject matter experts together from the DoD and VA, the PHWC pilot levera

HIV Testing and Prevention Services in Behavioral Health Organizations: A Multi-method Study Using the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research.

Despite the well-established need to increase access to HIV testing and prevention services among people with serious mental illness, little is known about the determinants of implementation of these services in behavioral health organizations. This multi-method study was conducted in King County, Washington, an EHE priority jurisdiction. A quantitative survey of 16 county behavioral health organizations explored the HIV testing and prevention services currently offered. Three organizations that viewed HIV testing and prevention services as very important or essential for their clients partici

Identification of focus areas for Australian Bat Lyssavirus potential exposure prevention in the Metro North Hospital and Health Service region.

Australian Bat Lyssavirus (ABLV) is a fatal rabies-like disease spread to humans from bats. All people who report bat bites or scratches in Queensland are considered potentially exposed to ABLV and are followed up and treated to prevent ABLV. Preventing members of the public intentionally interacting with bats will reduce the number of potential exposures to ABLV. In order to target public health messaging, this study examines the epidemiology of potential ABLV exposures in Metro North Hospital and Health Service (HHS), a region of Queensland that encompasses metro and rural areas in the south

Using a population-based approach to prevent hepatocellular cancer in New South Wales, Australia: effects on health services utilisation.

BACKGROUND: Australians born in countries where hepatitis B infection is endemic are 6-12 times more likely to develop hepatocellular cancer (HCC) than Australian-born individuals. However, a program of screening, surveillance and treatment of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) in high risk populations could significantly reduce disease progression and death related to end-stage liver disease and HCC. Consequently we are implementing the B Positive pilot project, aiming to optimise the management of CHB in at-risk populations in south-west Sydney. Program participants receive routine care, enhanced dis

Interim polio vaccine information materials. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Department of Health and Human Services. Notice.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has modified its recommendation for use of the two polio vaccines to discourage use of oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) for the first two doses administered, except in limited circumstances. This revised recommendation necessitates a revision of the vaccine information statement entitled, "Polio Vaccines: What You Need to Know" (dated February 6, 1997), which was developed by the CDC as required by the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act of 1986 (NCVIA). To ensure that up-to-date information is available regarding this revised recommendation, CDC i
