The osteoplastic flap technique is the open and direct approach to the frontal sinus and is especially useful when disease extends laterally into the frontal sinus. One of the vital steps of surgery is delineation of the boundary of the frontal sinus. This can usually be performed either by using the classical 6-ft Caldwell view X-ray template or more recently by application of the image-guided navigation system. The present article describes an alternative technique of using 3D printing technology for preoperative creation of the onlay template to mark the limits of the frontal sinus during o

BACKGROUND: The use of three-dimensional (3D) printing in neurosurgery has become more prominent in recent years for surgical training, preoperative planning, and patient education. Several smaller studies are available using 3D printing; however, there is a lack of a concise review. This article provides a systematic review of 3D models in use by neurosurgical residents, with emphasis on training, learning, and simulation.
METHODS: A structured literature search of PubMed and Embase was conducted using PRISMA guidelines to identify publications specific to 3D models trialed on neurosurgical

BACKGROUND: Cardiac myxomas are common and account for 50% of primary intracardiac tumors. Atypical locations of cardiac myxoma increase the risk of intraoperative iatrogenic injuries. Herein, we report a case of using three-dimensional printing (3D) to facilitate the removal of an atypical cardiac myxoma in a 63-year-old woman.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Mass in the high posterior atrial septum was confirmed through imaging. Due to the potential involvement of the mass to surrounding vital structures, 3D printing of the cardiac mass was performed. The tumor was completely resected via median stern

Cartilage damage caused by aging, repeated overloading, trauma, and diseases can result in chronic pain, inflammation, stiffness, and even disability. Unlike other types of tissues (bone, skin, muscle, etc.), cartilage tissue has an extremely weak regenerative capacity. Currently, the gold standard surgical treatment for repairing cartilage damage includes autografts and allografts. However, these procedures are limited by insufficient donor sources and the potential for immunological rejection. After years of development, engineered tissue now provides a valuable artificial replacement for ti

The inferomedial orbital strut (IOS) is the thin bony junction of the orbital medial wall and floor. Its fracture is common and leads to serious complications, including enophthalmos, globe dystopia and diplopia. However, anatomical restoration of the IOS is challenging owing to reduced structural support; sound anatomical background and accurate implants are therefore essential. The aim of the present study was to incorporate data from cadaveric orbit anatomy into three-dimensional (3D) printing technology and to reconstruct the complex orbital fracture elaborately. After averaging the data f

The dental occlusion is the important reference for replacement of the temporomandibular joint. If a patient does not have normal occlusion, few considerations are needed for temporomandibular joint replacement. The custom-made prosthesis, typically fabricated with a stereolithographic model, is probably the optimized solution currently available. However the ready-made stock from Biomet Microfixation System (Jacksonville, FL) is the only available product, which is authorized by the government ministry in South Korea, for replacement of the temporomandibular joint. This report presents a pati

Orbital hypertelorism is defined as an increased distance between both medial and lateral sides of the orbits. Most common causes are frontonasal malformations, craniofacial fissures, encephalocele and a miscellaneous group of various syndromic or chromosomal disorders. Surgical correction of orbital hypertelorism is still challenging. The present report describes a case of severe orbital hypertelorism of an 11-year-old boy, where surgical correction was planned using three-dimensional printing modelling. This approach allowed reducing time of surgery, accurately planning the location of the o

Ancient Egyptian mummies represent an opportunity to learn more about the health, beliefs, and skills of humans in antiquity. A fully wrapped mummy, from a Late Ptolemaic cemetery (c.332-30 BC) in Edfu, Egypt, has been stored, unexamined, at the Cairo Egyptian Museum since 1916. We hypothesized that scanning and 3D-printing the mummy using Computed Tomography (CT) could help in documenting and promoting its public display. CT enabled non-invasive digital unwrapping and revealed a well-preserved mummy. Biological sex could be determined from the presence of male genitalia; epiphyseal fusion and
