Prison homosexuality and its effect on post-prison sexual behavior.

Although there has grown up to a considerable literature on sex experiences in prison, little has been written on the post-prison behavioral patterns of those who, voluntarily or involuntarily, become initiated into homosexuality while incarcerated. In the light of the considerable number of prisoners and ex-prisoners in the original Kinsey sample, it is possible that the Institute for Sex Research might have in its files material that would shed light on this problem. To date, nothing has been forthcoming. In one of the few references to the subject, Kirkham (1972, p. 42) suggests that sexual

Prison connectivity and disease transmission to neighboring communities: The role of prison staff.

Using smartphone location data and a novel application of publicly available employment data, we map how California communities are connected to nearby prisons through the movement of prison staff, and we measure the role these connections play in spreading infectious diseases. Leveraging an exogenous prisoner transfer-induced COVID-19 outbreak at San Quentin state prison in June 2020 as a quasiexperiment, we examine the unidirectional spread of the disease from the prison to surrounding communities. This outbreak was unique: its origin from outside Northern California was clearly documented a

[Medical care in prisons-legal framework, structure, and the role of the prison physician].

The medical care of prisoners in the German correctional system has traditionally taken place within a parallel structure, characterized by specific actors, regulations, and conditions. In light of the serious challenges in recruiting medical personnel for correctional facilities, cooperation with the public health system is becoming increasingly important. This is evident, for example, in the growing reliance on private (specialist) physicians and in the establishment of specially secured hospital rooms for the inpatient treatment of prisoners in public hospitals.International frameworks such

Health-promoting prisons in the female estate: an analysis of prison inspection data.

BACKGROUND: Women in prison have comparatively greater health needs than men, often compounded by structures and policies within the prison system. The notion of a 'health-promoting' prison is a concept which has been put forward to address health inequalities and health deterioration in prisons. It has, however, not been fully discussed in relation to women in prison. The paper aims to distil the learning and evidence in relation to health promotion in female prisons using prison inspection reports of women's prisons in England and Wales. METHODS: Prison inspection reports are one way of asc

Dehumanizing Prisoners: Remaining Sentence Duration Predicts the Ascription of Mind to Prisoners.

We tested the novel hypothesis that the dehumanization of prisoners varies as a function of how soon they will be released from prison. Seven studies indicate that people ascribe soon-to-be-released prisoners greater mental sophistication than those with more time to serve, all other things being equal. Studies 3 to 6 indicate that these effects are mediated by perceptions that imprisonment has served the functions of rehabilitation, retribution, and future deterrence. Finally, Study 7 demonstrates that beliefs about rehabilitation and deterrence may be the most important in accounting for the

Prisoners' experience and perceptions of health care in Australian prisons: a qualitative study.

PURPOSE: Patient-centred care is a key approach used in Australia for the delivery of quality health care, and understanding experiences and perceptions is a key part to this. This paper aims to explore prisoners' experiences and perceptions of health-care service provision in New South Wales, Australia. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: In February and March 2017, 24 focus groups, consisting of 128 participants, were undertaken using semi-structured interviews that explored experiences of health care in prison. [Risk behaviours and Chlamydia trachomatis prevalence in prisoners by length of stay in prison].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Young prisoners have high-risk behaviors and socio-economic insecurity that increases vulnerability for Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) acquisition. Monitoring its prevalence will help to reduce infection rates. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Cross-sectional study from a convenience sample of prisoners aged 18-25 years. Urine samples were obtained to determine CT. A standardized and anonymous questionnaire was used to collect the study variables. RESULTS: The overall CT prevalence was 11%, significantly higher in those with less than one year in prison, who also presented higher

'The god of criminals is their belly': diet, prisoner health, and prison medical officers in mid-nineteenth-century English and Irish prisons.

Existing scholarship on prison diets has emphasised the role of food and its restriction as a key aspect of the deterrent system of prison discipline introduced in the 1860s. Here we suggest that a strong emphasis was placed on dietary regulation after the establishment of the reformist, but also 'testing', separate system of confinement in the mid-nineteenth century. While the impact of diet on the physical health of prisoners was a major concern, we argue that the psychological impact of food was also stressed, and some prison administrators and doctors argued that diet had an important prot

Exploring medication safety in prisons: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: Drug-related problems (DRPs), which encompass medication errors (MEs), adverse drug reactions and adverse drug events (ADEs), represent significant challenges in healthcare settings. While medication safety has been extensively studied in hospitals and primary care settings leading to development of improvement strategies, there is limited understanding of these issues within prison healthcare environments. This knowledge gap is concerning given that prisoners often have complex medication needs due to higher rates of chronic physical and mental ill health and substance use disorder

Experiences and impact of moral injury in prisons.

Moral injury is the persistent mental or emotional distress resulting from events that challenge one's moral beliefs. It is characterised by intense shame, guilt, worthlessness, disgust or anger and can contribute towards the development of serious mental disorders. The nature of working in prisons means that staff often face physically and psychologically challenging scenarios, and prison staff report high rates of mental ill-health and suicidal thoughts. Equally, detainees may be especially vulnerable to moral injury-related mental health difficulties having engaged in illicit actions and be

Cancer screening in prisons: lessons for health providers.

BACKGROUND: Lifestyle factors place those who experience incarceration at increased risk of morbidity and mortality from a range of preventable diseases, including cancer. METHODS: Two nurses were employed for a period of 6months to facilitate bowel and breast cancer screening of prisoners across four correctional centres in Queensland. We identify factors impacting on cancer screening in prisons and document the outcomes for those screened. RESULTS: Both screening programs produced a positivity rate of ∼17% in those screened, with 23 individuals returning a positive faecal occult blood test

The identification of synthetic cannabinoids in English prisons.

Synthetic cannabinoids (SC) are extremely prevalent within the prison system and cause problems for prisoners, law enforcement and health services. SC are often soaked into paper then posted into prisons therefore one of the aims of this research is to collaborate with Rapiscan Systems Ltd. and local prisons in England to measure the effectiveness of trace detection methods for the indication of SC in prison post using the Itemiser 3E®. To ensure compounds did not go undetected, samples with Ion Trap Mobility Spectrometry™ peaks indicative of synthetic cannabinoids on the Itemiser 3E® were ana
