PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article addresses three areas where new research demonstrates the potential to impact the health of children and adolescents: sun protection, probiotic use, and parental smoking cessation.
RECENT FINDINGS: Skin cancer rates are rising, and sun exposure in childhood and exposure to tanning beds are important preventable risk factors. Research on the use of probiotics to treat a variety of intestinal and nonintestinal diseases is expanding. By counseling parents about smoking cessation, pediatricians can assist in decreasing childhood exposure to harmful second-hand and

BACKGROUND/AIMS: There have been no reports on the relationship between the analyses of the intestinal flora of colorectal cancer patients and colorectal carcinogenesis. In this study we investigated the differences between the intestinal flora of colorectal cancer patients and healthy subjects and assessed the possibility of using probiotics to prevent colorectal carcinogenesis.
METHODOLOGY: The subjects were 10 colorectal cancer patients and 20 healthy persons. A stool specimen and peripheral blood specimen were collected from the patients and 10 of the healthy subjects to analyze their int

For some decades now, bacteria known as probiotics have been added to various foods because of their beneficial effects for human health. The mechanism of action of probiotics is related to their ability to compete with pathogenic microorganisms for adhesion sites, to antagonize these pathogens or to modulate the host"s immune response. The potential application of probiotics for oral health has recently attracted the attention of several teams of researchers. Although only a few clinical studies have been conducted so far, the results to date suggest that probiotics could be useful in prevent

Probiotics are bacteria and yeast that have a beneficial effect on the maintenance of health. Probiotic microorganisms are inherently present in fermented food products. A renewed interest in probiotic therapy designed for both treatment and prevention of intestinal and extraintestinal disorders has resulted in studies in infants and children. This review focuses on the applications of probiotics in enteric conditions experienced by neonates and discusses future evaluations to develop recommendations for their use.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is the most commonly acquired neonatal intraabdominal emergency and causes significant morbidity and mortality. A proposed strategy for the prevention of NEC is the administration of oral probiotics. Probiotics have been shown to reduce NEC in experimental rat models and have been used in clinical trials. The authors aimed to review the existing data on the use of oral probiotics for the prevention of NEC in preterm infants (age <33 weeks) and those with very low birth weight (VLBW).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Systematic review of randomized controlled

Nowadays. there is a growing interest in probiotics as a safe way of changing the intestinal bacterial flora. Probiotics may have potential in several gastroenterological conditions, especially when the intestinal flora has been disturbed. Most scientific evidence is available for diarrhoea patients treated with Lactobacillus GG, Lactobacillus reuteri or Saccharomyces boulardii. Meta-analyses have shown an overall reduction in the risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea during treatment with probiotics, and benefits have also been demonstrated for patients with rota-virus-associated diarrhoea.

Autism is a developmental disease characterized by a spectrum of symptoms ranging from decreased verbal skills and social withdrawal, to repetitive behavior and violent outbursts. Genetic analysis has yielded a few potentially interesting genes, however no clear linkage has been established. For this reason, it has been suggested that the etiology of autism may involve multiple loci. This, in large part, explains why so many different theories abound. One such theory is that of mercury poisoning. Environmentally acquired mercury, either through some causal contact or through vaccination, has b

A probiotic is a viable microbial dietary supplement that beneficially affects the host through its effects in the intestinal tract. Probiotics are widely used to prepare fermented dairy products such as yogurt or freeze-dried cultures. In the future, they may also be found in fermented vegetables and meats. Several health-related effects associated with the intake of probiotics, including alleviation of lactose intolerance and immune enhancement, have been reported in human studies. Some evidence suggests a role for probiotics in reducing the risk of rotavirus-induced diarrhea and colon cance

Probiotics are defined as living organisms, beneficial to health when ingested. Different species of microorganisms such as lactic acid bacteria or yeasts have been proposed for human use. These microorganisms differ from each other and it is, therefore, unlikely that they will act in the same way. Probiotics could be used for several conditions such as diarrhoea, candidal vaginitis, urinary tract infections, immune disorders, lactose intolerance, hypercholesterolaemia and food allergy. The effects of probiotics in some of these conditions have been directly observed, in others it has been onl

After oral administration of live oral vaccines COLINFANT and MUTAFLOR prepared from non-enteropathogenic E. coli strains, both strains colonized effectively the intestine in full-term and preterm infants and remained for many weeks showing, that they were capable to establish themselves as a resident strain in the infant's gut. The presence of E. coli stimulated significantly antibody production in gut, saliva and serum of colonized infants. An early induction of secretory IgA production is important particularly in formula-fed infants, where it partly replaces the lacking immunoglobulin supp

Probiotics and polyphenols have the potential to modulate gut health. However, gastrointestinal barriers often limit their delivery and, consequently, their biological activity. In addition, the persistence of probiotic cells in the gut, particularly in the large intestine, is crucial to their biological function. This study develops a novel combination of polyphenolic compounds and Lacticaseibacillus probiotic cells to enhance the delivery and persistence of probiotic cells in the gut without exogenous polymers and coatings. In this combination, the polyphenols are loaded in the probiotic cel

BACKGROUND: Breastmilk is an important factor affecting the infant's gut microbiota and health. Both milk microbiome and the content of oligosaccharides play a role in this effect. The mother's lifestyle can affect the breast milk microbiome. In this study, we assessed the breast milk microbiome in healthy mothers in Iran and its relationship to the mother's lifestyle during lactation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, from May 2022 to January 2023, 20 mother-neonates participated by donating their breastmilk samples and completing two questionnaires (food recall for nutritio

Fermented foods and probiotics represent complementary yet distinct components of human nutrition. Fermented foods are shaped by biochemical transformations driven by microbial metabolism, whereas probiotics are live microorganisms that may confer health benefits to the host. In both cases, bacteria, yeasts, and filamentous fungi mediate key metabolic activities that generate bioactive compounds and modulate host-microbiota interactions. During fermentation, microbial communities synthesize organic acids, peptides, exopolysaccharides, vitamins, and other metabolites that enhance food safety, s

Achieving tumor-specific delivery and sustained activation of both cytotoxic and immune-modulating agents remains a critical challenge in chemoimmunotherapy. Here, a bacterial platform was engineered to combine enzyme/prodrug chemotherapy with immunotherapy, in which tumor-homing Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 expressed cytosine deaminase to convert the prodrug 5-fluorocytosine into the cytotoxic drug 5-fluorouracil and concurrently produced an IL-15 superagonist and a PD-L1 blocking nanobody in tumors. This platform demonstrated potent antitumor effects in murine MC38 and B16-F10 solid tumor mo

Hepatobiliary diseases have a high prevalence worldwide, with a wide range of diseases involved in the liver and biliary system. Modifications in gut microbiota have been proven to have an association with unbalanced intestinal homeostasis and the dysfunction of host metabolism and the immune system, which can be the risk factors for many hepatobiliary diseases, such as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), alcoholic liver disease (ALD), nonalcoholic fatty steatohepatitis (NASH), hepatitis, cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and cholestasis, as well as infection due to liver transpl

Common gastric diseases include chronic gastritis, gastric ulcers and gastric cancer. The etiology of gastric diseases is complicated, including genetics, diet, excessive smoking and drinking, environmental factors, and bacterial infections. As live microorganisms, probiotics can confer health benefits to the host. At present, probiotics have been widely used in the preparation of foods, health products, and medicines. Due to their positive effects in improving diarrhea, constipation, alleviating allergies, enhancing immunity, and maintaining intestinal homeostasis, studies worldwide have focu

The global infection rate of fungal diseases is increasing year by year, and it has gradually become one of the most serious infectious diseases threatening human health. However, the side effects of antifungal drugs and the fungal resistance to these drugs are gradually increasing. Therefore, the development of new broad-spectrum, safe, and economical alternatives to antibacterial drugs are essential. Probiotics are microorganisms that are beneficial for human health. They boost human immunity, resist pathogen colonization, and reduce pathogen infection. Many investigations have shown their i

Skin, an exterior interface of the human body is home to commensal microbiota and also acts a physical barrier that protects from invasion of foreign pathogenic microorganisms. In recent years, interest has significantly expanded beyond the gut microbiome to include the skin microbiome and its influence in managing several skin disorders. Probiotics play a major role in maintaining human health and disease prevention. Topical probiotics have demonstrated beneficial effects for the treatment of certain inflammatory skin diseases such as acne, rosacea, psoriasis etc., and also found to have a pr
