A latent variables examination of processing speed, response inhibition, and working memory during typical development.

This study addressed three related aims: (a) to replicate and extend previous work regarding the nonunitary nature of processing speed, response inhibition, and working memory during development; (b) to quantify the rate at which processing speed, response inhibition, and working memory develop and the extent to which the development of these latter abilities reflect general changes in processing speed; and (c) to evaluate whether commonly used tasks of processing speed, response inhibition, and working memory are valid and reliable when used with a developmentally diverse group. To address th

Subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation and associations with attention and processing speed in Parkinson's disease.

Although subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN DBS) is an effective treatment for the motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD), its effects on cognitive functions are controversial. This cross-sectional study aimed to compare attention and processing speed in PD patients with STN-DBS and those receiving medical therapy, using a multimodal assessment combining P300 event-related potentials and neuropsychological tests. The study included 20 PD patients who underwent STN DBS and 17 PD patients who were followed with medical treatment. Demographic and clinical data for all patients we

Perceptual Processing Speed, Social Intelligence and Football Refereeing Performance: The Conditional Role of Attentional Control.

Football refereeing involves rapid decision-making in dynamic, uncertain, and socially demanding environments. This study examined an integrative cognitive-behavioral model of football refereeing performance, focusing on perceptual processing speed (PPS), attentional control (AC), and social intelligence (SI). Sixty-one male football referees (Mage = 30.04, SD = 4.06) enrolled in a national talent development program across multiple competitive seasons participated in the study. At the beginning of each season, referees completed standardized, ability-based assessments of PPS (processing speed

Association of chronic pain and slower processing speed with falls in community-dwelling older adults.

BACKGROUND: Falls in older adults are a major public health concern. Chronic pain and slower processing speed are risk factors for falls; however, their combined effect on falls remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to assess whether the coexistence of chronic pain and slower processing speed was associated with falls in community-dwelling older adults. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 320 older adults who participated in a community-based health survey. Chronic pain was defined as pain persisting or recurring for more than 3 months. Processing speed was assessed by the Digit S

Response times from gap detection threshold testing relate to cognitive processing speed in young adults.

OBJECTIVE: In addition to a gap detection threshold, an auditory gap detection task also provides information on response time. This study investigated the association of response time from an adaptive gap detection task with two validated measures of cognitive processing speed as well as scores from a cognitive screener, while accounting for the effects of age, peripheral hearing ability, and HIV status. DESIGN: Participants (age 17-45 years) were from a prospective cohort study in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania with normal hearing ability and no reported neurological diseases. The final sample inc

Plasma proteomic analysis of intermuscular fat links muscle integrity with processing speed in older adults.

INTRODUCTION: More intermuscular fat (IMF) has been associated with lower cognitive performance and faster age-associated decline in cognitive function however, the mechanisms driving this relationship have not been fully elucidated. We utilized proteomic analyses to identify the molecular mediators of the association between IMF and cognition to gain further insight into the mechanisms underlying this association. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, the plasma proteomic profile of IMF was assessed in the Baltimore Longitudinal Study on Aging (BLSA; n=941, age=66.7±15.2) and validated in

Information processing speed modulation by electrical brain stimulation in multiple sclerosis: towards individually tailored protocols.

Information processing speed is a core cognitive process, highly relevant in everyday life and the most frequent and disabling cognitive symptom in patients with relapsing multiple sclerosis. Correlational evidence from brain imaging suggests involvement of the superior parietal lobe in the speed component of information processing, thereby providing a neurobiological foundation for neuromodulatory interventions. By using regionally specific, focalized transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in healthy individuals and patients with relapsing multiple sclerosis, we provide causal evidenc

A description of processing speed, learning and memory in people with multiple sclerosis aged 55.

BACKGROUND: Approximately half of people with Multiple Sclerosis (pwMS) have cognitive difficulties, including problems with executive functioning, attention, learning, memory and information processing speed. Aging is also associated with declines in cognition. It is unclear if pwMS show a more rapid cognitive decline as they age. OBJECTIVE: To describe information processing speed, memory, and learning in an older sample, while taking into account polypharmacy and common age-related comorbidities. METHODS: Ninety-nine people, 55 years and older, with and without MS completed the Brief Inte

Differences in resting state functional connectivity relative to multiple sclerosis and impaired information processing speed.

BACKGROUND: Fifty-one percent of individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) develop cognitive impairment (CI) in information processing speed (IPS). Although IPS scores are associated with health and well-being, neural changes that underlie IPS impairments in MS are not understood. Resting state fMRI can provide insight into brain function changes underlying impairment in persons with MS. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to assess functional connectivity (FC) differences in (i) persons with MS compared to healthy controls (HC), (ii) persons with both MS and CI (MS-CI) compared to HC, (iii) persons with MS

Speed of Information Processing and Verbal Working Memory in Children and Adolescents With Cochlear Implants.

BACKGROUND: Verbal working memory delays are found in many deaf children with cochlear implants compared with normal-hearing peers, but the factors contributing to these delays are not well understood. This study investigated differences between cochlear implant users and normal-hearing peers in memory scanning speed during a challenging verbal working memory task. To better understand variability in verbal working memory capacity within each sample, associations between memory scanning speed, speech recognition, and language were also investigated. METHODS: Twenty-five prelingually deaf, ear

Assessing processing speed among individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities: A match-to-sample paradigm.

Speeded Matching (SpM) is a new processing speed match-to-sample test within the NIH Toolbox Cognitive Battery. It was designed to developmentally extend feasibility to younger children or individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD). SpM reduces cognitive demands to tapping an identical match as opposed to judging and indicating whether two stimuli are identical. In this study, we piloted SpM among 148 participants with fragile X syndrome, Down syndrome, or other intellectual disabilities (chronological age mean = 17.8 years, sd = 5.4; nonverbal mental age mean = 65 month

Baseline biomarkers of connectome disruption and atrophy predict future processing speed in early multiple sclerosis.

The development of accurate prognoses in multiple sclerosis is difficult, as the disease is characterized by heterogeneous patterns of brain abnormalities that relate in an unclear way to future impairments. Here, we use a statistical modeling approach to determine if the baseline pattern of connectome disruption due to T2-FLAIR lesions could predict a patient's future processing speed, as measured using the Symbol Digits Modality Test scores. Imaging data, demographics and Symbol Digits Modality Test scores were collected from 61 early relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis patients. The Netw

Sex differences in the relationship between prolactin levels and impaired processing speed in early psychosis.

INTRODUCTION: Hyperprolactinaemia is commonly observed in people with psychotic disorders due to D2 receptor blockade by antipsychotic drugs, although it may also exist in drug-naïve patients with first-episode psychosis. Recent studies suggest that hyperprolactinaemia may have a negative impact on cognitive function in people with early psychosis. We aimed to explore whether there are sex differences in the association between prolactin levels and cognitive performance in early psychosis patients. METHODS: We studied 60 young patients with early psychosis (aged 18-35 years, 35% females) and

Revising expectations in real time: processing speed constrains lexical form prediction in German 8-12 year-olds.

Do children predict the lexical form of upcoming linguistic input as readily as they predict semantic features? We investigated word form prediction using the prenominal mismatch paradigm, which tests whether children experience processing costs when encountering prediction-inconsistent gender-marked articles. We also examined individual differences and whether prenominal mismatch effects reflect revision of an anticipated noun. German-speaking 8-12-year-olds self-paced through sentences that either confirmed or disconfirmed expectations about a predictable noun. In half of the items, a predic

Effect of deep gray matter atrophy on information processing speed in early relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive dysfunction, including reduced Information processing speed (IPS), is relatively common in multiple sclerosis(MS). IPS deficits have profound effects on several aspects of patients' life. Previous studies showed that deep gray matter atrophy is highly correlated with overall cognitive impairment in MS. However, the effect of deep gray matter atrophy on IPS deficits is not well understood. In this study, we evaluated the effects of deep gray matter volume changes on IPS in people with early relapse-remitting MS (RRMS) compared to healthy control. METHODS: In this case-con

Frontal brain activity and cognitive processing speed in multiple sclerosis: An exploration of EEG neurofeedback training.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive deficits including impaired information processing speed as assessed by the Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT) are common in multiple sclerosis (MS). Oscillatory markers of processing speed may be extracted from magnetoencephalographic (MEG) and electroencephalographic (EEG) resting-state recordings. In this context, an increased proportion of frontal slow-wave (theta, 4-8 Hz) to fast-wave (beta, 13-30 Hz) EEG activity was indicative of impaired SDMT performance. Such an increased theta/beta ratio may reflect oscillatory slowing associated with deficits in attention cont

Global cognitive function and processing speed are associated with gait and balance dysfunction in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Our primary objective was to determine the relationship between global cognitive function and specific domains of gait and balance in a cohort of Parkinson's disease (PD) subjects. In a secondary analysis, we determined whether specific cognitive domains correlated with gait and balance performance. METHODS: Fourteen PD subjects (mean age 61.1 ± 7.8 years) were recruited from the Rush University Medical Center Movement Disorders clinic. Subjects underwent clinical assessment using the motor subsection of the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) followed by quantitative

Speed of processing and reading disability: a cross-linguistic investigation of dyslexia and borderline intellectual functioning.

English and Italian children with dyslexia were compared with children with reading difficulties associated with low-IQ on tests of simple and choice RT, and in number and symbol scanning tasks. On all four speed-of-processing tasks, children with low-IQ responded more slowly than children with dyslexia and age-controls. In the choice RT task, the performance of children with low-IQ was also less accurate than that of children of normal IQ, consistent with theories linking processing speed limitations with low-IQ. These findings support the hypothesis that dyslexia is a specific cognitive defi
