Preventing pressure ulcers in Connecticut hospitals by using the plan-do-study-act model of quality improvement.

BACKGROUND: Seventeen hospitals and the Peer Review Organization of Connecticut (Qualidigm) attempted to increase early identification of high-risk patients and utilization of pressure ulcer preventive measures. METHODS: A multihospital retrospective cohort study with medical record abstraction was used to obtain a total of 1,955 (baseline) and 891 (follow-up) patients aged 65 years and older discharged after treatment for pneumonia, cerebrovascular disease, or congestive heart failure with a length of stay > or = five days. During a nine-month period, the hospitals conducted four plan-do-stu

Application of the 2017 KDIGO Guideline for the Evaluation and Care of Living Kidney Donors to Clinical Practice.

The Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) 2017 "Clinical Practice Guideline on the Evaluation and Care of Living Kidney Donors" was developed to assist medical professionals who evaluate living kidney donor candidates and provide care before, during, and after donation. This guideline Work Group concluded that a comprehensive approach to donor candidate risk assessment should replace eligibility decisions on the basis of assessments of single risk factors in isolation. To address all issues important to living donors in a pragmatic and comprehensive guideline, many of the guideline

Cancer risks associated with external radiation from diagnostic imaging procedures.

The 600% increase in medical radiation exposure to the US population since 1980 has provided immense benefit, but increased potential future cancer risks to patients. Most of the increase is from diagnostic radiologic procedures. The objectives of this review are to summarize epidemiologic data on cancer risks associated with diagnostic procedures, describe how exposures from recent diagnostic procedures relate to radiation levels linked with cancer occurrence, and propose a framework of strategies to reduce radiation from diagnostic imaging in patients. We briefly review radiation dose defini

More than a pinch: a review of pain management during intrauterine device placement.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pain during intrauterine device (IUD) insertion is currently a major focus of contraceptive care, driven by patient advocacy, social media discourse, and growing recognition that procedural pain may deter patients from seeking an IUD. Concurrently, professional organizations have released updated guidance on pain management during IUD placement. This review summarizes contemporary evidence regarding patient risk factors, procedural techniques, and pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions for IUD insertion pain. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent literature demonstrates that p

Healthcare accessibility in Yemen's conflict zones: comprehensive review focused on strategies and solutions.

The nine-year ongoing conflict in Yemen accumulated humanitarian crisis, and severely struggling healthcare system. In the current review, we are trying here to elucidate the many perspective areas where the conflict in Yemen has made it harder to access medical care, emphasizing how the war has negatively affected medical infrastructure, caused a severe shortage of medical supplies, and obstructed access to or the ability to receive medical services. We conducted a comprehensive search across reports from in-ground working organizations like UN, MSF, ICRC, and official authorial channels, inc

Retention of underrepresented minority students in dental school: one dental schools story.

There is a large disparity between the proportions of African-Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans in the general population and in the dental profession. While these underrepresented minorities (URMs) as a group make up almost 30% of the United States population, they constitute only about 6% of the nation's dentists. Eliminating this disparity is important in addressing access to care for underrepresented groups. Texas A&M Health Science Center Baylor College of Dentistry (TAMHSC-BCD) enrolled greater numbers and proportions of URM students than any other non-minority school from 2006-

The medical physicist's role in the artificial intelligence era: an updated EFOMP curricular and professional framework.

PURPOSE: Five years after the European Federation of Organizations for Medical Physics (EFOMP) published its first curricular framework for artificial intelligence (AI) in medical physics, the updated core curricula for radiology, radiotherapy and nuclear medicine have incorporated AI as a core competency rather than an addendum, a change consistent with the framework's principal recommendation. This paper examines the resulting educational landscape and defines the next stage of AI competency for the profession. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Focus Group 3 of the EFOMP Artificial Intelligence Specia

Diabetes Digital App Technology: Benefits, Challenges, and Recommendations. A Consensus Report by the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) and the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Diabetes Technology Working Group.

Digital health technology, especially digital and health applications ("apps"), have been developing rapidly to help people manage their diabetes. Numerous health-related apps provided on smartphones and other wireless devices are available to support people with diabetes who need to adopt either lifestyle interventions or medication adjustments in response to glucose-monitoring data. However, regulations and guidelines have not caught up with the burgeoning field to standardize how mobile health apps are reviewed and monitored for patient safety and clinical validity. [Peculiarities of oral health of organized collectives and professional communities].

The analysis of scientific literature on the peculiarities of the dental status of organized groups and professional associations. After reviewing the literature, it becomes clear that the studies carried out in organized groups and professional societies are very relevant today, because the prevalence of dental diseases among them remains high, fueled by a number of factors: habitat, diet, lifestyle, occupational hazards, particularly hygienic oral care. Nowadays there is no information about the features of the dental status among the clergy, whose professional activity is connected with dir

Decommodifying and Humanizing Health Care: Revisiting Pellegrino's Ethical Imperative.

UNLABELLED: Policy Points A quarter of a century since bioethicist Edmund Pellegrino warned about the commodification of health and health care, the problem has significantly worsened. Commodification of health and health care objectifies and dehumanizes people and undermines core concepts of holistic person-centered health, much less core human rights, including fulfillment of human potential and comprehensive health care. Multilevel sustained strategies and multisector coalitions are required to decommodify and humanize health and health care based on mental models, national and state polici
