Changes in bite force after orthognathic surgical correction of mandibular prognathism: a systematic review.

Patients requesting treatment for mandibular prognathism seek functional and aesthetic improvements. Improvements in bite force and efficiency are generally used as measures of better function. It is unclear what effect the surgical correction of mandibular prognathism will have on the patient's occlusal forces. The literature was searched using medical subject heading (MeSH) and key word terms 'bite force', 'osteotomy', 'orthognathic surgery', and 'prognathism'. A total of 17 articles were included in this review. These included a total of 697 patients, who ranged in age from 15 to 44 years.

Does skeletal surgery for asymmetric mandibular prognathism influence the soft tissue contour and thickness?

PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether asymmetric mandibular prognathism accompanies a fundamental difference in soft tissue thickness and whether asymmetric mandibular setback surgery would influence the contour and thickness of the soft tissue of the chin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present retrospective study included skeletal class III patients with significant mandibular chin deviation greater than 6 mm at the pogonion, who had undergone cone-beam computed tomography before and 6 months after surgery during a 2-year period. The predictor variables were timin

Genome-wide analyses of susceptibility genes responsible for mandibular prognathism in the Japanese population.

BACKGROUND: Mandibular prognathism (MP) is a type of malocclusion characterized by an imbalance in the anteroposterior position of the upper and lower jaws. The prevalence of MP in Japan is relatively high, suggesting a unique genetic background in the population. HIGHLIGHT: Genome-wide analyses identified susceptibility genes responsible for mandibular prognathism in the Japanese population. CONCLUSION: Identification of the genes associated with malocclusion will pave the way for personalized and precise medicine and contribute to craniofacial biology.

Long-term skeletal stability in the treatment of mandibular prognathism with a physiological positioning strategy.

Our aim was to evaluate the long-term skeletal stability of the mandible in 21 patients after orthognathic surgery with physiological positioning. The measurement points SNB, B point (X, Y), Pog (X, Y), and the angle of the ramus were measured on cephalometric photographs to assess skeletal stability preoperatively, immediately after operation, and one and two years postoperatively. In addition, we evaluated the clinical symptoms of disorders of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The analysis of the cephalometric photographs showed that SNB, B point X, and Pog X showed no significant differenc

Factors related to skeletal relapse in the two-jaw surgery treatment of mandibular prognathism.

This study identified factors contributing to skeletal relapse in the two-jaw surgery treatment of mandibular prognathism. A set of three standardized lateral cephalograms (T1: before surgery, T2: immediately after surgery, T3: final follow-up after surgery) were obtained from 35 patients. The surgical changes were defined as follows: postsurgical immediate change (T2-T1), postoperative stability (T3-T2) and the final surgical change (T3-T1). The occlusal plane and gonial angles were also measured. Relapse was defined as the reverse movements of the menton point (Me) and point A, with the null

Extraoral subcondylar ramus osteotomy for correction of mandibular prognathism. The surgical technique and complications.

1178 patients with mandibular prognathism and/or asymmetry, in some cases combined with maxillary retrognathism, were treated by extraoral horizontal or oblique ramus osteotomy during the period from 1939 to 1989. The described percutaneous retromandibular approach is a simple, rapid and reliable technique which can usually be performed under local anaesthesia. Very few complications, particularly neurological, were observed. These aspects justify consideration of this technique when indications for a simple, straight set-back procedure of the mandible exist, and there is no tendency to bite-o

Tomographic assessment of alterations of the temporomandibular joint after surgical correction of mandibular prognathism.

The aims of this study were to identify absolute condylar displacements and temporal fossa changes and to assess alterations in the condyle-fossa relationships after bilateral vertical ramus osteotomy for correction of mandibular prognathism. Twenty-four patients had linear tomograms taken of their temporomandibular joints within 1 week preoperatively and 6 months postoperatively. To ensure identical orientation of the focusing plane, a custom-made headholder was constructed and the head of the patient was positioned on the x-ray table in a standardized way. All radiographs were traced, and su

[The study of the relationships between the masticatory muscles activity and the craniofacial morphology in mandibular prognathism].

Facial asymmetry is usually manifested in mandibular prognathism. This is probably because of the intervention of masticatory muscles in some way or another. Functional factors of masticatory muscles are also believed to be responsible for the relapse of facial disharmony even after surgical orthodontic treatment. In the present study, cephalometric analysis was made on a total of 43 patients with mandibular prognathism. The functional activity of their masticatory muscles was measured quantitatively by using electromyography. The data thus obtained were analyzed with respect to their bearings

A comparative study of wire osteosynthesis versus bone screws in the treatment of mandibular prognathism.

In sagittal split osteotomies as well as in vertical osteotomies for reduction of the mandible, wire and bone screw osteosynthesis has been used in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg within the last few years in a total of 221 cases of mandibular prognathism. In about one half of these cases a conventional wire osteosynthesis was performed, and in the other half a stable osteosynthesis with bone screws was used. One hundred twenty-one cases could be included in a follow-up study, and a true comparison could be made between the two methods.

Analysis of MYO1H Gene Polymorphism in Skeletal Class-III Malocclusion Due to Mandibular Prognathism.

Background  Mandibular prognathism (MP) is a craniofacial deformity resulting from the combined effects of environmental and genetic factors. Although various linkage and genome-wide association studies for mandibular prognathism have identified multiple strongly associated regions and genes, the causal genes and variants responsible for the deformity remained ambiguous. Aim  This research work was aimed to study the association between polymorphism rs10850110 of the MYO1H gene and skeletal class-III malocclusion in our local population. Materials and Methods  Thirty patients with skeletal cla

Unilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy: an alternative for some cases of asymmetric mandibular prognathism.

The objective of this study was to propose a treatment protocol for patients with lateral prognathism based on the unilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (USSRO). This was a prospective study involving 31 patients with lateral prognathism, who required a bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSRO). Two groups were formed using the proposed protocol, with specific inclusion criteria for each group: BSSRO (n=17) and USSRO (n=14). Occlusal parameters (dental midline deviation, overbite, and overjet) were measured preoperatively (T0), at model surgery (T1), 1 month postoperative (T2), and
