Evaluation of Qatar's First Cardiac Rehabilitation Program: A Brief Report.

BACKGROUND: There are few studies on the impact of cardiac rehabilitation (CR) in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR), where the burden of risk factors and context is somewhat different from Western countries where much of the evidence is derived. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate patient engagement in, and outcomes associated with, participation in Qatar's first and only CR program, from inception. METHODS: This was a retrospective, observational study of patients referred to Heart Hospital's CR program from January 2013-September, 2018. The program offered 3 sessions/week over 6-12 weeks, dependin

Diabetes Antibody Standardization Program: evaluation of assays for insulin autoantibodies.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Insulin autoantibodies (IAA) are important in type 1 diabetes risk assessment. However, their determination varies more between laboratories than other diabetes autoantibodies. The Diabetes Antibody Standardization Program (DASP) aims to improve and standardise measurement of autoantibodies associated with type 1 diabetes. We report the results of measurement of IAA from DASP workshops in 2002, 2003 and 2005. METHODS: Up to 32 laboratories in 14 countries participated in each workshop. Aliquots of coded sera from 50 patients with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes and 100 blood

Evaluation of a cancer exercise program: patient and physician beliefs.

OBJECTIVE: Participation in an exercise intervention during cancer treatment diminishes the side effects associated with cancer therapies, although such benefits vary according to the disease and the patient characteristics. A structured exercise program providing an individualized fitness program tailored to the patients' illness, treatment, and fitness level would address this variability. However, the need, desired components, and anticipated barriers of such a program have not been systematically explored from either the point of view of cancer patients or treating oncologists. METHODS: S

A 5-year evaluation of a methadone medical maintenance program.

Methadone medical maintenance (MMM) is a model for the treatment of opioid dependence in which a monthly supply of methadone is distributed in an office setting, in contrast to more highly regulated settings where daily observed dosing is the norm. We assessed patient characteristics and treatment outcomes of an MMM program initiated in the Bronx, New York, in 1999 by conducting a retrospective chart review. Participant characteristics were compared with those of patients enrolled in affiliated conventional methadone maintenance treatment programs. Patients had diverse ethnicities, occupations

Description and evaluation of a canine volunteer blood donor program.

Human volunteer blood donor programs are commonplace, but the concept of nonhuman animal blood banking is relatively new. Few studies exist regarding efficacy, donor screening, and safety for volunteer companion animals. This retrospective study evaluated a nonprofit, community-based canine volunteer donor program using community blood drives. Of 98 potential donors, 14 were ineligible to donate, including 4 who tested seropositive for blood-borne pathogens. Of 84 donors, 45 were Dog Erythrocyte Antigen (DEA) 1.1 positive and 39 were DEA1.1 negative. Donations totaling 143 included 29 repeat d

Vocal problems among teachers: evaluation of a preventive voice program.

Vocal education programs for teachers may prevent the emergence of vocal disorders; however, only a few studies have tried to evaluate the effectiveness of these preventive programs, particularly in the long term. Two hundred and sixty-four subjects, mostly kindergarten and primary school female teachers, participated in a course on voice care, including a theoretical seminar (120 minutes) and a short voice group therapy (180 minutes, small groups of 20 subjects). For 3 months, they had to either attend the vocal ergonomics norms and, as psychological reinforcement, they had to make out a dail

Short term evaluation of a rural immunization program in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Immunization remains the primary strategy in both the control and prevention of common childhood diseases, particularly in the developing world. Immunization and preprimary health care services were commenced in a rural community in Nigeria in 1998, when vaccine coverage for all Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) diseases (tuberculosis, polio, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, measles, and hepatitis B) was considerably low with only 43% of children fully immunized. METHODS: Children aged 0-2 years and living in a rural community were recruited into the study. Data on vaccination

Assessment of an itinerant medical evaluation program for school dysfunction.

This paper describes an itinerant medical evaluation (IME) project and reports on the outcome of 108 consecutive referrals made in the first year. Subjects were of ages 5 to 17 years. Most students had been evaluated by the schools but were not receiving special education or related services. IME led to clinical diagnosis of ADHD in 70% of the sample, and specific learning disabilities were diagnosed in 26%. Several other clinically significant and educationally relevant diagnoses were made. As a result of the IME, many students were placed in special education and/or began to receive related

Evaluation of a prevention program for pathological gambling among adolescents.

Many adolescents gamble, some gamble regularly and 2% to 5% suffer from pathological gambling (Jacobs, 1989; Ladouceur & Mireault, 1988; Lesieur & Klein, 1987). This study evaluated the efficacy of a pathological gambling prevention program conducted in five high schools in the Quebec City area. Based on an alcohol prevention program (Rhodes & Jason, 1988), it included the following components: the legality of gambling, the commercial nature of the activity, automatic gambling behaviors, pathological gambling and coping skills. Nine junior and senior classes participated in the program (N=134)

Qualitative evaluation of a coaching and leadership program for early-stage researchers in KL2 and T32 training programs.

BACKGROUND: Early-stage clinical and translational researchers require not only technical expertise but also leadership and communication skills for long-term success. Many training programs lack structured approaches to building these essential "soft skills." OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact and perceived value of a structured coaching and leadership program for trainees in KL2 and T32 programs. METHODS: This qualitative evaluation assessed a Coaching and Leadership Program (CLP) that include individualized coaching and group workshops incorporating leadership development and the DISC beha

Re-PROGRAM: The evaluation of a brief intervention program for patients with functional seizures in an outpatient hospital setting.

OBJECTIVE: Functional seizures (FS) account for 20%-25% of referrals to specialist epilepsy clinics. They are associated with major disability, increased mortality, and frequent and costly health care use. Current guidelines emphasize the importance of implementing clinical pathways to coordinate and deliver effective treatment, but there are few targeted evidence-based interventions that reliably improve patient outcomes, and treatment resources are limited. We conducted a retrospective evaluation of Re-PROGRAM, a novel, brief intervention for functional seizure patients, to assess its feasib

Developing a Program Evaluation Training Within a National Federal Healthcare Setting: Veterans Affairs Evaluation Bootcamp Training.

INTRODUCTION: Learning Health Systems (LHSs) depend on the ability to effectively evaluate programs and translate data into practice. Within the Veterans Affairs (VA) health system, formal mandates require programmatic decision-making to be data-driven; however, opportunities for staff to develop applied program evaluation skills that support LHS learning cycles remain limited. METHODS: To address this need, the synchronous virtual Evaluation Bootcamp Training (EBcT) was developed to equip learners with practical, applied evaluation skills. This manuscript describes the design rationale, stru

BACKGROUND: The ADAPT Program have improved activities of daily living (ADL) in women with fibromyalgia. To understand the functioning of the program, it is relevant to evaluate how program theory components are linked to outcomes (mechanisms) and how the randomised controlled trial (RCT) context, influenced delivery and outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate ADAPT in terms of dose, mechanisms of change and contextual factors. MATERIAL/METHODS: Dose was recorded on the n = 21 participants receiving ADAPT in the IMPROvE trial (NCT01352052). A subsample of n = 16 attended one of three 2-hour focusgr

7 Fellows, 7 Fellowships: Why N = 1 Matters in Program Evaluation.

Program evaluation data collected from learners are widely used in medical education for quality improvement, accountability, and accreditation. Generally, success entails high response rates and mean item scores above predetermined thresholds. Although pragmatic, these practices assume when data from multiple learners are aggregated, they converge on a more accurate representation of a single educational object, such as a training program, and reduce the influence of misrepresentative, outlying data. Drawing on Communities of Practice and the professional identity formation literature, this P
