Mandibular extension as a trigger of the proprioceptive trigeminocardiac reflex.

The trigeminocardiac reflex (TCR) is a physiological response characterized by a reduction in heart rate and arterial blood pressure following stimulation of any branch of the fifth cranial nerve. This review presents a novel mechanism of TCR induction through proprioceptive activation of the trigeminal nerve via mandibular extension (ME). Accordingly, it is referred to as the "proprioceptive trigeminocardiac reflex" (pTCR). An overview of the existing literature on ME-evoked TCR in humans and animals is presented, with particular emphasis on evidence of cerebral microcirculatory alterations.

Proprioceptive Modulation of Pallidal Physiology in Cervical Dystonia.

BACKGROUND: There is a growing body of evidence suggesting that botulinum toxin can alter proprioceptive feedback and modulate the muscle-spindle output for the treatment of dystonia. However, the mechanism for this modulation remains unclear. METHODS: We conducted a study involving 17 patients with cervical dystonia (CD), seven of whom had prominent CD and 10 with generalized dystonia (GD) along with CD. We investigated the effects of neck vibration, a form of proprioceptive modulation, on spontaneous single-neuron responses and local field potentials (LFPs) recorded from the globus pallidum

NaV1.1 is essential for proprioceptive signaling and motor behaviors.

The voltage-gated sodium channel (NaV), NaV1.1, is well-studied in the central nervous system; conversely, its contribution to peripheral sensory neuron function is more enigmatic. Here, we identify a new role for NaV1.1 in mammalian proprioception. RNAscope analysis and in vitro patch-clamp recordings in genetically identified mouse proprioceptors show ubiquitous channel expression and significant contributions to intrinsic excitability. Notably, genetic deletion of NaV1.1 in sensory neurons caused profound and visible motor coordination deficits in conditional knockout mice of both sexes, si

Touch as an auxiliary proprioceptive cue for movement control.

Recent studies extended the classical view that touch is mainly devoted to the perception of the external world. Perceptual tasks where the hand was stationary demonstrated that cutaneous stimuli from contact with objects provide the illusion of hand displacement. Here, we tested the hypothesis that touch provides auxiliary proprioceptive feedback for guiding actions. We used a well-established perceptual phenomenon to dissociate the estimates of reaching direction from touch and musculoskeletal proprioception. Participants slid their fingertip on a ridged plate to move toward a target without

New functions for the proprioceptive system in skeletal biology.

Muscle spindles and Golgi tendon organs (GTOs) are two types of sensory receptors that respond to changes in length or tension of skeletal muscles. These mechanosensors have long been known to participate in both proprioception and stretch reflex. Here, we present recent findings implicating these organs in maintenance of spine alignment as well as in realignment of fractured bones. These discoveries have been made in several mouse lines lacking functional mechanosensors in part or completely. In both studies, the absence of functional spindles and GTOs produced a more severe phenotype than th

Proprioceptive Localization Deficits in People With Cerebellar Damage.

It has been hypothesized that an important function of the cerebellum is predicting the state of the body during movement. Yet, the extent of cerebellar involvement in perception of limb state (i.e., proprioception, specifically limb position sense) has yet to be determined. Here, we investigated whether patients with cerebellar damage have deficits when trying to locate their hand in space (i.e., proprioceptive localization), which is highly important for everyday movements. By comparing performance during passive robot-controlled and active self-made multi-joint movements, we were able to de

Proprioceptive mechanisms in occlusion-stimulated masseter hypercontraction.

Neurons in the trigeminal mesencephalic nucleus (Vme) have an axon that branches peripherally to innervate the orofacial region and projects centrally to the trigeminal motor nucleus (Vmo). They function as the primary neurons conveying proprioceptive messages. The present study aimed to demonstrate the presence of a periodontal-Vme-Vmo circuit and to provide evidence for its involvement in an experimental unilateral anterior crossbite (UAC) model, which can induce osteoarthritis in the temporomandibular joint. Cholera toxin B subunit (CTb) was injected into the inferior alveolar nerve of rats

Presbypropria: the effects of physiological ageing on proprioceptive control.

Several changes in the human sensory systems, like presbycusis or presbyopia, are well-known to occur with physiological ageing. A similar change is likely to occur in proprioception, too, but there are strong and unexplained discrepancies in the literature. It was proposed that assessment of the attentional cost of proprioceptive control could provide information able to unify these previous studies. To this aim, 15 young adults and 15 older adults performed a position matching task in single and dual-task paradigms with different difficulty levels of the secondary task (congruent and incongr

Proprioceptive function of the shoulder girdle in healthy volunteers.

In 27 healthy volunteers (9 females, 18 males) we evaluated the proprioceptive function of the glenohumeral joint. The volunteers were asked to place the arm in different positions with and without visual control. The test was performed for the dominant and for the nondominant extremity. The following joint positions were measured: 50 degrees, 100 degrees, 150 degrees abduction; 50 degrees, 100 degrees, 150 degrees flexion; +45 degrees, 0 degrees, -45 degrees rotation in 90 degrees abduction. Joint position was documented with a motion-analyzing system with passive reflecting markers. The resu

Relationships Between Swallowing Function, Sialorrhea, and Cervical Proprioception in Parkinson's Disease.

OBJECTIVE: In patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), alterations in position sense, swallowing function, and sialorrhea may occur. In neurological disorders, impairment of sensory input from the cervical region has been shown to adversely affect swallowing function. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between swallowing function, sialorrhea, and cervical position sense in patients with PD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 55 patients with PD completed assessments of swallowing function using the Turkish version of the Eating Assessment Tool-10, sial

Augmenting natural skin stretch during active finger motion reshapes hand proprioception.

There is strong evidence that skin stretch at the joint contributes to proprioception, the perceptual representation of body position and motion. Previous studies on fingers and hand dorsum focused on illusory movement elicited by skin-stretch stimuli when no actual motion was performed, often combined with local anesthesia and mostly delivered qualitatively, leaving unclear how controlled, augmented skin deformation influences proprioception during active movement. Here, we addressed this question by applying precisely scaled skin-stretch stimuli across the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) join

The independence of impairments in proprioception and visuomotor adaptation after stroke.

BACKGROUND: Proprioceptive impairments are common after stroke and are associated with worse motor recovery and poor rehabilitation outcomes. Motor learning may also be an important factor in motor recovery, and some evidence in healthy adults suggests that reduced proprioceptive function is associated with reductions in motor learning. It is unclear how impairments in proprioception and motor learning relate after stroke. Here we used robotics and a traditional clinical assessment to examine the link between impairments in proprioception after stroke and a type of motor learning known as visu

Extended physiological proprioception is affected by transhumeral Socket-Suspended prosthesis use.

The objective of this study was to define targeted reaching performance without visual information for transhumeral (TH) prosthesis users, establishing baseline information about extended physiological proprioception (EPP) in this population. Subjects completed a seated proprioceptive targeting task under simultaneous motion capture, using their prosthesis and intact limb. Eight male subjects, median age of 58 years (range 29-77 years), were selected from an ongoing screening study to participate. Five subjects had a left-side TH amputation, and three a right-side TH amputation. Median time si

Recovery of locomotion after injury in Drosophila melanogaster depends on proprioception.

Locomotion is necessary for survival in most animal species. However, injuries to the appendages mediating locomotion are common. We assess the recovery of walking in Drosophila melanogaster following leg amputation. Whereas flies pre-amputation explore open arenas in a symmetric fashion on average, foreleg amputation induces a strong turning bias away from the side of the amputation. However, we find that unbiased walking behavior returns over time in wild-type flies, while recovery is significantly impaired in proprioceptive mutants. To identify the biomechanical basis of this locomotor impa

The effects of ACL injury on knee proprioception: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: It is suggested the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) plays a significant role in knee proprioception, however, the effect of ACL injury on knee proprioception is unclear. Studies utilising the two most common measurement techniques, joint position sense and threshold to detect passive motion, have provided evidence both for and against a proprioceptive deficient following ACL injury. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to undertake a meta-analysis investigating the effects of ACL injury, treated conservatively or by reconstruction, on proprioception of the knee, measured usi

Proprioception more impaired distally than proximally in subjects with hemispheric dysfunction.

Holmes noted that with hemispheric injuries proprioceptive disturbances were more marked in the distal than proximal limb segments and proposed that this difference was related to the size of cortical sensory representations. An alternative hypothesis is that sensation from distal segments projects to the contralateral hemisphere and sensation from proximal segments projects to both hemispheres. Selective hemispheric anesthesia was used to test these alternative hypotheses and revealed a decrement in distal but not proximal proprioception with hemispheric anesthesia, thereby supporting the bil

The role of ocular muscle proprioception in visual localization of targets.

The role of ocular muscle proprioception in the localization of visual targets has been investigated in normal humans by deviating one eye to create an experimental strabismus. The passively deviated eye was covered and the other eye viewed the target. With a hand-pointing task, targets were systematically mislocalized in the direction of the deviated nonviewing eye. A 4- to 6-degree error resulted when the nonviewing eye was offset 30 degrees from straight ahead. When the eye was deviated, the perceived "straight-ahead" was also displaced, by a similar amount, in the same direction. Since the

Responsiveness of the cervical joint position error test to detect changes in neck proprioception following four weeks of home-based proprioceptive training.

INTRODUCTION: People with chronic neck pain (CNP) commonly exhibit a range of physical impairments including cervical proprioceptive deficits. Assessing proprioception using a head mounted laser to assess joint position error (JPE) is a reliable and valid measure. However, the responsiveness of this measure has not been assessed. OBJECTIVE: To assess the responsiveness of the measure of cervical JPE after a 4-week home-based neck proprioceptive training intervention in people with CNP. DESIGN: An observational study to assess the responsiveness of the measure of cervical JPE. METHODS: The J
