Biological Response after 14-Day Cannabidiol and Propylene Glycol Inhalation in Sprague-Dawley Rats.

Objective: Cannabidiol (CBD), a phytocannabinoid of increasing interest for its purported therapeutic effects, is primarily consumed via ingestion and inhalation. While the toxicology of orally administered CBD has been reported, little is known about the effects of CBD inhalation. Doses selected for the present analysis allowed for evaluation of dose-response at concentrations >100-fold higher than typical human consumption levels. Materials and Methods: CBD (98.89% pure) was formulated in propylene glycol (PG) and aerosolized by nebulization to evaluate biological response after nose-only in

Toxicity of Propylene Glycol Extract of Propolis on Central Nervous System and Liver in Pregnant and Neonatal Rats.

BACKGROUND: Propolis has become one of the most preferred supplements due to its beneficial biological properties. Organic (water and vegetable oils) and chemical (ethyl alcohol, propylene glycol, and glycerol) solvents are used for propolis extraction. However, the effects of these chemicals on health should be taken into account. OBJECTIVES: In this study, the effects of propolis extracts on health were evaluated. METHODS: 32 pregnant Wistar albino rats and 64 neonatal/young adults were given three different extractions of propolis (propylene glycol, water, and olive oil). Histopathologica

Near fatal intoxication by nicotine and propylene glycol injection: a case report of an e-liquid poisoning.

BACKGROUND: Concern about intoxication by e-liquid is growing as calls to poison control centers have increased since their introduction. Only three cases of intoxication by injection have been reported worldwide. Our case is unique because of the precise follow-up of a patient who survived a lethal dose of self-injected e-liquid, without other co-intoxication. CASE PRESENTATION: A 51-year-old male presented to the Emergency Department after injecting himself intravenously (IV) in the forearm with 10 mL of e-liquid (1000 mg of nicotine diluted in propylene glycol). An agitation phase was foll

Antibacterial SnO2 nanorods as efficient fillers of poly(propylene fumarate-co-ethylene glycol) biomaterials.

Antibacterial and biocompatible SnO2 nanorods have been easily synthesized through a hydrothermal process with the aid of a cationic surfactant, and incorporated as nanoreinforcements in poly(propylene fumarate-co-ethylene glycol) (P(PF-co-EG)) copolymer crosslinked with N-vinyl-pyrrolidone (NVP) by sonication and thermal curing. The nanorods were randomly and individually dispersed inside the P(PF-co-EG) network, and noticeably increased the thermal stability, hydrophilicity, degree of crystallinity, protein absorption capability as well as stiffness and strength of the matrix, whilst decreas

Propylene glycol: an often unrecognized cause of allergic contact dermatitis in patients using topical corticosteroids.

Propylene glycol (PG) is considered to be a ubiquitous formulary ingredient used in many personal care products and pharmaceutical preparations. It is an organic compound commonly found in topical corticosteroids (CS). Cutaneous reactions to PG are mostly irritant, but allergic contact dermatitis to PG is well-documented. Cosensitization to PG and topical CS can occur, making it challenging to choose the appropriate topical CS in a PG-allergic patient. This review is aimed at guiding clinicians in the selection of a suitable topical corticosteroid when presented with patients allergic to PG.

Inhalation toxicology and carcinogenesis studies of propylene glycol mono-t-butyl ether in rats and mice.

Propylene glycol mono-t-butyl ether (PGMBE) is used as a solvent in a variety of commercial applications. Male and female F344/N rats and B6C3F(1) mice were exposed to PGMBE by whole-body inhalation for 2 or 14 weeks (0, 75, 150, 300, 600, or 1200 ppm) or 2 years (0, 75, 300, or 1200 ppm); male NBR rats were exposed for 2 weeks. The kidney and the liver were targets of PGMBE toxicity in rats. Renal lesions suggestive of alpha(2u)-globulin nephropathy were observed in male F344/N, in the 2 and 14-week studies, no kidney lesions were seen in NBR rats. In the 2-year study, male rats displayed exp

[Inhibition of neutrophil function by solvent of injectable sedatives--effects of propylene glycol, ethanol and benzyl alcohol].

Propylene glycol, ethanol and benzyl alcohol are usually included in the injection solutions of diazepam, flunitrazepam and others as solvents and/or pain relief agents. It was reported that diazepam and flunitrazepam inhibited oxidative burst of human neutrophils to produce O2-, H2O2 and other active oxygen species. However, the present study revealed that the solvents had far more potent inhibitory effects in this regard than diazepam and flunitrazepam themselves. The solvents reversibly inhibited phagocytosis and O2- production by neutrophils, and they were stimulated by both soluble stimul

Comparative characterization of the zein/propylene glycol alginate nanoparticles prepared by complex coacervation in aqueous ethanol.

Novel zein/propylene glycol alginate nanoparticles (ZP-NPs) prepared by complex coacervation in 70 % aqueous ethanol were characterized and compared with those fabricated by the conventional antisolvation (ZP-NPa) and pH cycling (ZP-NPc) methods. Zeta potential and particle size measurements as well as scanning electron microscope and intrinsic fluorescence analysis confirmed that ZP-NPs possessed a different component distribution and microstructure. ZP-NPs were more hydrophobic according to surface hydrophobicity measurement and a contact angle closer to 90° (88.5°), more dispersible in wate

E-cigarette aerosols of propylene glycol impair BK channel activity and parameters of mucociliary function.

Propylene glycol (PG) is a common delivery vehicle for nicotine and flavorings in e-cigarette (e-cig) liquids and is largely considered safe for ingestion. However, little is known about its effects as an e-cig aerosol on the airway. Here, we investigated whether pure PG e-cig aerosols in realistic daily amounts impact parameters of mucociliary function and airway inflammation in a large animal model (sheep) in vivo and primary human bronchial epithelial cells (HBECs) in vitro. Five-day exposure of sheep to e-cig aerosols of 100% PG increased mucus concentrations (% mucus solids) of tracheal s

Propylene glycol-mixed steam enhanced extraction for an efficient and sustainable remediation of PAHs-contaminated soil.

An innovative thermal desorption method, propylene glycol (PG)-mixed steam enhanced extraction, is proposed for a highly efficient remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)-contaminated soil. It is found that injecting PG-mixed steam into soil column could obtain > 99% removal efficiencies of PAHs either for the pyrene-spiked soil, or for the contaminated field soil with high-molecular-weight PAHs. PG is a safe and low-cost dihydric alcohol with a boiling point higher than water. When the PG-mixed steam penetrated the contaminated soil, the PG vapor preferentially condensed to for

Modifier Effect in Silica-Supported FePO4 and Fe-Mo-O Catalysts for Propylene Glycol Oxidation.

Currently, catalytic processing of biorenewable raw materials into valuable products attracts more and more attention. In the present work, silica-supported FePO4 and Fe-Mo-O catalysts are prepared, their phase composition, and catalytic properties are studied in the process of selective oxidation of propylene glycol into valuable mono- and bicarbonyl compounds, namely, hydroxyacetone and methylglyoxal. A comparative analysis of the main routes of propylene glycol adsorption with its subsequent oxidative conversion into carbonyl products is carried out. The DFT calculations show that in the pr

Insight into pyrolysis mechanism of 1,2-propylene glycol: Based on density functional theory and wavefunction analysis.

The multiple thermal decomposition mechanisms of 1,2-propylene glycol are studied through theoretical calculation and experiment, including carbon chain break, dehydrogenation and dehydration mechanism. The wavefunction is employed to analyze the decomposition process from a micro perspective. DLPNO-CCSD(T)/CBS method is engaged in establishing potential energy surface. The results reveal that the dehydration and carbon chain break mechanism are the primary pyrolysis paths, and the former is the dominant pyrolysis mechanism at low temperature, while the latter is applicable at the high tempera

Influence of the E-Cigarette Emission Profile by the Ratio of Glycerol to Propylene Glycol in E-Liquid Composition.

The use of electronic cigarettes (E-cig) is popular because of the perception that they are less addictive and safer compared to the traditional cigarettes. Nevertheless, there are still harmful effects associated with chemicals emitted from E-cig. Identifying the sources of the emitted compounds can be challenging because of the differences in the design of E-cig devices and the variability in the composition of E-cig liquids used in these devices. In this study, the emission profiles from impurity-free E-liquids containing only propylene glycol and glycerol in various percentage ratios along

Anticoagulant and antithrombotic activities of low-molecular-weight propylene glycol alginate sodium sulfate (PSS).

Propylene glycol alginate sodium sulfate (PSS), a sulfated polysaccharide derivative, has been used as a heparinoid drug to prevent and treat hyperlipidemia and ischemic cardio-cerebrovascular diseases in China for nearly 30 years. To extend the applications of PSS, a series of low-molecular-weight PSSs (named FPs) were prepared by oxidative-reductive depolymerization, and the antithrombotic activities were investigated thoroughly in vitro and in vivo. The bioactivity evaluation demonstrated a positive correlation between the molecular weight and the anticoagulant and antithrombotic activities

Data on the relationship between acetone, ethylene glycol, isopropanol, methanol, and propylene glycol serum/plasma concentrations and osmolal gaps in patients at an academic medical center.

Ingestion of toxic alcohols other than ethanol (ethylene glycol, methanol, isopropanol, and propylene glycol) can cause life-threatening complications including altered level of consciousness, respiratory depression, and organ damage from metabolites. Many hospitals lack the ability to specifically analyze these compounds using gas chromatography, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, or by enzymatic assays for ethylene glycol. Consequently, the presence of these compounds in blood is often ascertained indirectly by laboratory testing for acid-base status, osmolal gap, and anion gap. In the re

Selective production of ethanol and 1,2-propylene glycol from cellulose over multifunctional tungsten-carbon catalysts.

Cellulose, as the most abundant renewable carbon resource, offers great potential for the sustainable production of low-carbon alcohols. However, its catalytic hydrogenolysis remains challenging due to the difficulty in controlling product distribution and reaction pathways. Herein, two tungsten-carbon-based catalytic systems were rationally designed to direct cellulose hydrogenolysis toward ethanol or 1,2-propylene glycol through site-dependent catalysis. A multifunctional Mo-Pt-WOx/WC catalyst was constructed for ethanol production, while a sulfonated Mo/WC-SO3H catalyst was developed for se

Pulmonary effects of inhalation exposure to propylene glycol ethers on blood gas diffusion - a human and in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: Propylene glycol ethers (PGEs) are volatile organic compounds commonly used as solvents in occupational and household products, making inhalation exposure ubiquitous. Although some PGEs are upper airway irritants, the underlying pulmonary effects of inhalation exposure to PGEs remain unknown. Darkened blood color was previously observed following human inhalation exposure to PGEs, suggesting reduced blood oxygenation and gas diffusion in the lungs. METHODS: Pulmonary effects of the most common PGEs, propylene glycol monomethyl ether (PGME) and butyl ether (PGBE), were investigated
