The association between Sjögren's syndrome (SS) and protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) was scarcly reported. To analyze the clinical, therapeutic, and outcome characteristics of patients with SS and PLE and also to delineate the potential mechanisms and pathways connecting the gut to SS targeted organ's pathology. Systematic screening was conducted using PubMed/MEDLINE, LILACS, SciELO, Web of Science, and Cochrane, dating 1980 to 2020. SS and PLE were the key words. Eighteen patients with SS and PLE were summarized. The patient's ages ranged between 20 and 88 years, and only 4 were males. Primar

Protein-losing enteropathy due to massive mesenteric lymphadenopathy is a rare complication of Gaucher disease which is generally refractory to treatment with enzyme replacement and substrate reduction therapies. It is postulated that lymph nodes may act as a "sanctuary site" into which these treatments cannot penetrate. We present the case of a male child with Gaucher disease who developed massive mesenteric lymph nodes despite otherwise successful treatment with enzyme replacement therapy, and subsequently developed protein-losing enteropathy. The sonographic and magnetic resonance appearanc

Amyloidosis of the gastrointestinal tract is usually a systemic disease. Localized gastrointestinal amyloidosis without evidence of extraintestinal involvement or an associated plasma cell dyscrasia is uncommon and does not usually cause death. We report a case of a patient with localized gastrointestinal amyloidosis who presented with protein-losing enteropathy and a fatal upper gastrointestinal bleed.

Protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) is a relatively rare condition. In this article, we report the case of a 6-year-old boy diagnosed with PLE who developed intussusception, in whom at operation Meckel's diverticulum was identified in his intestine. Spontaneous reduction of intussusception is thought to relate to the mechanism of PLE.

An infrequent but devastating late complication of Fontan circulation is protein-losing enteropathy (PLE), which results from unbalanced lymphatic homeostasis. Surgical decompression of the thoracic duct by redirecting its drainage to the pulmonary venous atrium has been introduced recently as a possible treatment. This report describes a single-institution experience with this innovative procedure in 2 patients with failing Fontan circulation with PLE refractory to optimized medical therapy.

A 51-year-old Japanese woman presented to our hospital with systemic edema and general fatigue. Her serum albumin level was very low (1.5 g/dL). Technetium-99 m-human serum albumin ((99m)Tc-HSA) scintigraphy showed albumin leakage from the upper small bowel. Magnetic resonance lymphangiography showed dilated lymphatic vessels in the chest, whereas double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE) showed white villi and chyle leakage in the deeper part of the duodenal mucosa. A duodenal mucosa biopsy specimen revealed lymphangiectasia. She was diagnosed with protein-losing enteropathy (PLE). Treatment with a fa

Protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) is a rare complication of Fontan palliation associated with significant morbidity and mortality. It is characterized by the loss of serum proteins into the intestinal lumen, and its pathophysiology likely involves enteral inflammation. Budesonide, an oral steroid, is an attractive treatment option because of its potent enteral activity and minimal systemic side effects. A single-center, retrospective review of Fontan-palliated PLE patients treated with oral budesonide for 6 months or longer was performed. The patient characteristics reviewed were demographics,

Protein losing enteropathy is described as a diverse group of disorders associated with excessive loss of serum proteins into the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The etiology of protein losing enteropathy is various. Increased mucosal permeability to protein as a result of cell damage, mucosal erosion, or lymphatic obstruction may develop protein losing enteropathy. Celiac disease is a common cause of protein losing enteropathy associated with small bowel villous atrophy in Europe. We experienced a case of protein losing enteropathy associated with small bowel villous atrophy of unknown origin. A

Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) is one of the uncommon complications of hepatic venous reconstruction in liver transplantation. Protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) secondary to this event has rarely been described. A 14-year-old girl suffering from acute hepatic failure underwent an emergency living-related liver transplantation and developed BCS 1 year later. Her condition has been managed with several sessions of hepatic venoplasty. On one occasion, she suffered septicemia and severe diarrhea, passing large amount of fibrinoid material. The diagnosis of PLE was made clinically, which resolved immedi

Protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) with hypoproteinemia is an uncommon but serious complication of congestive heart failure. Reports of patients with PLE resulting from severe tricuspid regurgitation (TR) caused by trauma are rare. A 66-year-old male diabetic patient had a chest contusion as a result of a road traffic accident, and one year later suffered from progressively generalized edema. Examination revealed severe TR with a high central venous pressure and PLE with serum protein deficiency. Treatment with albumin administration and diuretic therapy proved ineffective, and consequently the

Intestinal lymphangiectasia is characterized by obstruction of lymph drainage from the small intestine and lacteal dilation that distorts the villus architecture. Lymphatic vessel obstruction and elevated intestinal lymphatic pressure in turn cause lymphatic leakage into the intestinal lumen, thus resulting in malabsorption and protein-losing enteropathy. Intestinal lymphangiectasia can be congenital or secondary to a disease that blocks intestinal lymph drainage. We describe the first case of intestinal lymphangiectasia in a premature infant. The infant presented with peripheral edema and low

Severe right-side heart failure developed in a 47-year-old Japanese woman who suffered from hypoalbuminemia and a massive right side chylous pleural effusion. She had been diagnosed as having protein-losing enteropathy with right ventricular cardiomyopathy. Autopsy showed congenital anomalies of the lymph ducts and abnormal deposition of fibrous and fatty tissue in the right ventricular myocardium. The clinical and pathological findings are consistent with the nonarrythmogenic form of the arrythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia.

A 13-year-old girl presented with malabsorption which was ascribed to intestinal lymphangiectasia. Three years later a generalised seizure resulted from hypocalcaemia that was shown to be due to hypoparathyroidism during investigation of which toxic copper accumulation was recognised. The chance occurrence of three rare conditions is extremely remote making intestinal lymphangiectasia likely as the primary pathology. It is suggested that chronic intestinal loss of the copper-carrying caeruloplasmin resulted in toxic parathyroid deposition of copper leading to hypoparathyroidism with consequent

A 37-yr-old white man experienced crampy abdominal pain beginning 21 days after successful bone marrow transplantation for chronic myelogenous leukemia. Generalized edema and hypoproteinemia developed. Symptoms persisted until 61 days post-transplant, when the patient developed an acute abdomen. At laparotomy, an edematous segment of jejunum was resected. Pathological examination showed submucosal vasculitis and necrotizing enteritis. Serum protein and albumin levels returned to normal within a few weeks after surgery. Vasculitis of the gastrointestinal tract should be considered in the differ

A 35-year-old HIV positive patient with skin and gastrointestinal localization of a Kaposi's sarcoma was admitted for severe diffuse edema. Increased alpha-I-antitrypsin clearance (150 ml/24 h) allowed us to confirm the diagnosis of protein loosing enteropathy resulting from sarcoma infiltration in the stomach, the duodenum and the entire small bowel. At autopsy, ileal ulcerations were found. Gastrointestinal involvement occurring during Kaposi's sarcoma is common and usually symptomless. The discovery of a protein loosing enteropathy in our patient suggests that this gastrointestinal involvem

Protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) is a rare syndrome characterized by excessive, nonspecific loss of serum proteins through the gastrointestinal tract. More than 60 distinct conditions across organ systems have been associated with PLE. The presentation is often nonspecific-manifesting as edema, diarrhea, or malnutrition-leading to delayed recognition. Protein-losing enteropathy arises through mucosal injury or lymphatic dysfunction. Evaluation requires exclusion of hepatic, renal, and nutritional causes, followed by targeted testing with stool α1-antitrypsin and upper or lower endoscopy. Early

BACKGROUND: Lymphoma is one of the most common malignancies in dogs, but ovarian lymphoma is exceedingly rare, with only a few reported cases. Most canine lymphomas are of B-cell origin, whereas T-cell lymphomas are generally associated with a more aggressive clinical course. Protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) is a well-documented cause of hypoalbuminemia in dogs, often resulting from lymphangiectasia or chronic enteropathies. The potential relationship between chronic immune-mediated disease and the development of lymphoma remains unclear.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory protein-losing enteropathy (iPLE) is thought to be associated with a hypercoagulable state and may predispose dogs to thromboembolism (TE). However, little information is available regarding the prevalence of TE in dogs with iPLE.
OBJECTIVES: Estimate the prevalence of TE in dogs with iPLE and collect clinical and clinicopathologic data from dogs with iPLE with and without TE.
ANIMALS: Twenty-two client-owned dogs with iPLE.
METHODS: Prospective, descriptive study. Dogs definitively diagnosed with iPLE based on standard diagnostic criteria and histopathology were re
