[Isolated macrodactyly or extremely circumscribed Proteus syndrome?].

We report on two unrelated female patients with unilateral macrodactyly of the 1st and 2nd toes and of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th toes, respectively. In addition, they had a local plantar soft tissue lump and radiographically abnormally broad phalanges of the affected toes. These clinical manifestations may represent either an isolated macrodactyly or an extremely localized form of Proteus syndrome.

Encephalocraniocutaneous lipomatosis, Proteus syndrome, and somatic mosaicism.

We report on a patient with manifestations of encephalocraniocutaneous lipomatosis and Proteus syndrome. Further comparison with other reported patients demonstrates a continuum, not 2 distinct entities that share common manifestations. This continuum supports the concept of somatic mosaicism.

Quantification of Proteus syndrome-associated lung disease.

BACKGROUND: Proteus syndrome is an ultra-rare mosaic overgrowth disorder. Individuals with Proteus syndrome can develop emphysematous and cystic changes of the lung that may lead to progressive respiratory symptoms and require surgical intervention. This retrospective study seeks to quantify the radiographic features of Proteus syndrome-associated lung disease using computed tomography (CT) of the chest. The first method derives a Cystic Lung Score (CLS) by using a computer-aided diagnostic tool to quantify the fraction of cystic involvement of the lung. The second method yields a Clinician Vi

Proteus mirabilis causing cellulitis in broiler chickens.

Given the need to understand the virulence profile of Proteus mirabilis isolates from cellulitis in broiler chickens and their ability to cause lesions, the present study aimed to characterize genotypically and phenotypically the virulence profiles of two strains of P. mirabilis isolated from cellulitis in broilers, as well as to evaluate their ability to experimentally reproduce the lesions in vivo. The strain with the highest virulence potential (LBUEL-A33) possessed mrpA, pmfA, ucaA, atfA (fimbriae), zapA, ptA (proteases), hpmA (hemolysin), and ireA (siderophore) genes, formed a very strong

Proteus syndrome: report of intra-abdominal lipomatosis.

Proteus syndrome (PS) is an extremely rare sporadic disorder that manifests as an asymmetric, disproportionate overgrowth of any connective tissues, such as bone, fat, or epidermal nevi, in a mosaic or patchy pattern. This hamartoneoplastic syndrome was first described by Cohen and Hayden. Its prevalence is approximately 1 per 1,000,000 live births, and intra-abdominal expansion has been reported in no more than 20 cases in the literature. The phenotypes of the patients differ because of the variation in the pattern of the overgrowths, making diagnosis difficult. Extremely large subcutaneous l

Pathogenesis of Proteus mirabilis urinary tract infection.

Proteus mirabilis is a causative agent of cystitis and pyelonephritis primarily in individuals with indwelling catheters or structural abnormalities of the urinary tract. The organism produces a variety of unique virulence factors that contribute to its pathogenicity and persistence in the human host.

Proteus syndrome with widespread portwine stain naevus.

Proteus syndrome is a rare condition comprising asymmetrical overgrowth of different parts of the body in association with various cutaneous abnormalities. We describe a 3-year-old boy with Proteus syndrome, who presented with hemihypertrophy of the right leg, asymmetric macrodactyly, subcutaneous masses and a widespread portwine stain interspersed with angiokeratomas on the right leg, scrotum and on the middle and left side of the back. Doppler ultrasound of the right leg did not show hypercirculation, but did reveal the absence of the right superficial femoral vein.

An Atypical Manifestation of Cellulitis Induced by Proteus mirabilis.

Cellulitis is a common bacterial skin infection typically caused by organisms such as Streptococcus and Staphylococcus species. Proteus mirabilis (P. mirabilis), a gram-negative rod more often linked to urinary tract infections, is not a frequent cause of cellulitis. However, certain biological traits like motility and the ability to form biofilms can occasionally contribute to infections in compromised tissue. This case discusses an uncommon presentation of cellulitis involving P. mirabilis and its clinical management. An 81-year-old woman with a history of vascular disease and other chronic

Identification of iron-responsive genes in Proteus vulgaris.

Iron is essential for almost all bacteria, and iron homeostasis is precisely controlled by the ferric uptake regulator (Fur). The Fur regulons have been well characterized in some model bacteria, yet little is known in the common opportunistic pathogen Proteus vulgaris. In this study, Fur regulon and iron-responsive genes in P. vulgaris were mainly defined by in silico and proteomic analyses. The results showed that about 250 potential Fur-regulated operons including 14 transcriptional factors were predicted, while 559 proteins exhibited differential expression in response to iron deficiency,

Detection and Transmission of Proteus mirabilis in Immunodeficient Mice.

The exclusion of opportunistic pathogens is important for protecting animal health and ensuring desired research outcomes in highly immunodeficient mice. Proteus mirabilis has been associated with gastrointestinal tract lesions, septicemia, pyelonephritis, splenomegaly, and hepatitis and can influence select mouse models. To inform health-surveillance practices after we experienced difficulty in excluding P. mirabilis from our mouse colony, we aimed to determine the likelihood of detecting P. mirabilis-positive immunocompromised (SRG), immunovague (Fbn1+/-), and immunocompetent (CD1) colony mi

Infective endocarditis by Proteus species: a systematic review.

Proteus spp. are members of the Enterobacteriaceae family and are Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacteria known to mainly cause urinary tract infections (UTIs) in humans. However, even though scarce evidence exists suggesting their potential to cause infective endocarditis (IE), a study summarizing the existing evidence is lacking. The purpose of this study was to systemically review all published cases of IE by Proteus species in the literature. A systematic review of PubMed, Scopus and Cochrane Library (through 5th May 2020) for studies providing epidemiological, clinical and microbiological data

Pharmacodynamic Study of Miransertib in Individuals with Proteus Syndrome.

Proteus syndrome is a life-threatening segmental overgrowth syndrome caused by a mosaic gain-of-function AKT1 variant. There are no effective treatments for Proteus syndrome. Miransertib is an AKT1 inhibitor that, prior to this study, has been evaluated only in adult oncology trials. We designed a non-randomized, phase 0/1 pilot study of miransertib in adults and children with Proteus syndrome to identify an appropriate dosage starting point for a future efficacy trial using a pharmacodynamic endpoint. The primary endpoint was a 50% reduction in the tissue levels of AKT phosphorylation from bi

Bronchoscopic concerns in Proteus syndrome: a case report.

Proteus syndrome (PS) is a rare congenital hamartomatous disorder with multisystem involvement. PS shows highly clinical variability due to overgrowth of the affected areas, and several features can make anesthetic management challenging. Little is known about the airway problem associated with anesthesia in PS patients. An 11-year-old girl with PS was scheduled for ear surgery under general anesthesia. She had features complicating intubation including facial asymmetry and disproportion, abnormal teeth, limitation of neck movement due to torticollis, and thoracolumbar scoliosis. This study re

Proteus syndrome: A rare cause of gigantic limb.

A congenital disorder with variable manifestations, including partial gigantism of the hands and feet with hypertrophy of soles, nevi, hemihypertrophy, gynecomastia, macrocephaly and other skull abnormalities, and abdominal lipomatosis. The cause is unknown, although a genetic origin, generally of autosomal-dominant transmission, has been conjectured. Symptoms can be treated, but there is no known cure. We present the case of a young male with grotesque overgrowth of the right lower limb, splenomegaly and multiple nevi. Angiography revealed venous malformation within the limb. The findings are

An unusual initial presentation of Proteus syndrome: macrosyndactyly.

Proteus syndrome is a complex disorder characterized by a wide variety of deformities including macrodactyly. In the present report, we present a case with complex macrosyndactyly in his hand. The patient was surgically treated. However, he admitted with lymphangiomas on his body during the follow-up period, leading to the diagnosis of Proteus syndrome. This article discusses the differential diagnosis of Proteus syndrome and the treatment methods used for macrodactyly along with the presentation of the case.
