[Extended-spectrum-beta-lactamase-producing Proteus mirabilis: laboratory-based surveillance in cooperation with 12 clinical laboratories in the Kinki Region of Japan].

We studied 247 strains of Proteus mirabilis collected during the 6 months from November 2003 to April 2004 from 12 clinical laboratories in the Kinki region of Japan for the production of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL). Eighteen strains (7.3%) showed MICs for cefpodoxime of > or = 2 microg/mL and 13 strains (5.2%) were positive for the double-disk synergy test. Susceptibility depended on genotype. MICs for cefepime, cefozopran, and cefpirome were high (> or = 8 microg/mL), and that for ceftazidime was low (0.12-0.5 microg/mL). Meropenem showed the lowest MIC (< or = 0.03-0.25 microg/m

Septic sacroiliitis due to Proteus mirabilis.

This case demonstrates the difficulty frequently encountered in making an early diagnosis of septic sacroiliitis. The proper use of appropriate laboratory tests and radiologic examinations can narrow the differential diagnosis significantly, with confirmation resting on culture results. Appropriate antibiotic therapy will depend on the organism isolated. When confronted by the typical clinical findings and supporting ancillary data of septic sacroiliitis, the physician should consider the possibility of an unusual organism such as Proteus mirabilis and should direct antibiotic therapy accordin

Clinical relevance of Proteus mirabilis in hospital patients: a two year survey.

A retrospective study was performed on 1072 non-duplicate isolates of Proteus mirabilis, taken in the period April 1996 to March 1998, and on 100 patient charts randomly selected during the same period. P. mirabilis isolates accounted for 7.7% of Enterobacteriaceae. The isolates were predominantly from urine (70.2%); of the total, 38.0% were penicillinase-producing isolates, 6.9% were extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing isolates and 3.6% produced inhibitor-resistant beta-lactamase (IRB). ESBL-producing isolates were observed in long-stay and intensive care and IRB-producing isola

Bacterial Etiologies of Ear Infection and Their Antimicrobial Susceptibility Pattern at the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Gondar, Northwest Ethiopia: A Six-Year Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: An ear infection is responsible for up to 40% of preventable hearing impairment; one of the reasons for frequent and unwise antibiotic usage, especially in the developing world. Since the incidence of antibiotic resistance is increasing, especially in resource-limited countries, up-to-date knowledge on the susceptibility of ear-discharge isolates to antibiotic is important for better patient treatment. Therefore, this study aimed at determining the bacterial etiologies and their antibiotic susceptibility profiles among patients suspected with ear infections. METHODS: We collected

[Urinary infection in patients with obstructive uropathies].

Obstructive uropathies are among the most Frequent predisposing factors in urinary infection. We have reviewed the frequency of pathogenes causin urinary infection in obstructive uropathies. We have exmined 259 patients with prostatic adenoma and urinary calculosis prior and after the operation during the years 1986 and 1987. The most frequent are bacteria: Proteus, Pseudomonas, Klebsiella and E. colli. Proteus was the most frequent (35.2 p.c.), and then Pseudomonas (24.5 p.c.) and E. coli (10 p.c.). Prostatic adenoma is frequent cause of urinary obstruction, and thus the urinary infection is

Antimicrobial activity of dequalinium chloride against leading germs of vaginal infections.

Dequalinium chloride (CAS 522-51-0) and povidone iodine (CAS 25655-41-8) are known as antiseptic agents and used in the local treatment of vaginal infections. Clotrimazole (CAS 23593-75-1) is an anti-fungal drug and applied primarily in the therapy of vulvo-vaginal candidiasis and to a lesser extent in bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis. However, antimicrobial activities of those three agents in comparison to each other have not been reported so far. To address this issue the antimicrobial activities of these agents against 18 germs relevant to vaginal infections were determined. The teste

Circumcision and periurethral carriage of Proteus mirabilis in boys.

Swabs were taken for culture from the periurethral area and urethral meatus in 124 uncircumcised and 60 circumcised boys. Proteus mirabilis was grown from 28 (22.6%) swabs from uncircumcised boys and from only one (1.7%) swab from circumcised boys. This supports the idea that the prepuce may be the source of proteus urinary tract infection.

Antimicrobial profiling and molecular characterization of antibiotic resistant genes of Proteus vulgaris isolated from tertiary care hospital, Islamabad, Pakistan.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common bacterial infections acquired from hospitals and community. Pseudomonas and Proteus species are the common cause of these UTIs. Generally, UTIs are self-limiting but have potential to re-occur. Extensive treatment therapy with antibiotics lead to the development of resistance in uropathogens. The development of antibiotic resistance is leading to the failure of currently available antibiotic based therapies thus making the situation worse. The objective of the present study was to access antimicrobial sensitivity and to characterize ant

A unique fatal case of Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome caused by Proteus mirabilis in an immunocompetent subject: Case report and literature analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome (WFS), also known as purpura fulminans, is a potentially lethal condition described as acute hemorrhagic necrosis of the adrenal glands. It is often caused by infection. Classically, Neisseriae meningitidis represents the main microorganism related to WFS, although, infrequently, also other infectious agents are reported as a possible etiologic agent. The authors report the first case of death due to Proteus mirabilis infection, with postmortem evidence of WFS. PATIENT CONCERNS: After a facial trauma that provoked a wound on the nose, the sub

Occurrence of Salmonella genomic island 1 (SGI1) in two African Proteus mirabilis strains isolated from diseased chicken flocks.

Two P. mirabilis strains, PmSHR21 and PmSHR38, were collected from chicken flocks in Sharkia Governorate, Egypt in 2016. The two strains showed multidrug-resistance (MDR) phenotypes and were detected to harbour I) floR and sul1 genes conferring resistance to florfenicol and chloramphenicol, and sulfonamides, respectively, II) a ~1.9 kbp class 1 integron containing aadA2-lnuF genes conferring resistance to spectinomycin and streptomycin, and lincosamides, respectively. Interestingly, the two strains were detected to contain SGI1 variant, SGI1-W and inserted between the 3' end of the chromosomal

Fournier's gangrene in a child with congenital genitourinary anomalies.

Fournier's gangrene is a rare urologic emergency in childhood that requires prompt diagnosis to deliver definitive and supportive care. Host susceptibility risk factors differ between adult and pediatric age groups with affected children usually otherwise systemically healthy. We present a case of Fournier's gangrene in a 2-year-old, from a genitourinary source of sepsis secondary to previously unreported genitourinary anatomical anomalies of congenital buried penis and hypospadias. Illustrative applied anatomy identifies the pathogenesis of this case, aiding recognition and understanding of t

[Lumbar panniculitis with subcutaneous abscess revealing pyonephrosis].

BACKGROUND: A clinical picture of hypodermitis in the lumbar region may reveal an abscess arising from infection due to pyonephrosis. We report a case below. CASE REPORT: A 58 year-old woman consulted for an area of inflammation in the left lumbar region that had been present for two months. The area of inflammation appeared two days after physiotherapy sessions prescribed for lower back pain. Laboratory examinations revealed inflammation associated with moderate renal failure. A skin biopsy sample taken from around the inflamed area showed septal hypodermitis. Ultrasound examination revealed
