Described a rare clinical observation of a patient aged 18 years with chronic left-sided otitis media against Proteus syndrome. By this age, the patient underwent a large number of operations regarding the removal of lymphangiomas, hemlimfangiomas, angiokeratitis of the body, as well as several sanitizing surgery on the left ear. A review of domestic and foreign literature showed that this case can be considered unique.

BACKGROUND: Proteus syndrome is an overgrowth disorder caused by a mosaic activating AKT1 variant. Hair abnormalities in Proteus syndrome have rarely been reported, and frequencies of such findings have not been elucidated.
OBJECTIVE: To define the types and frequencies of hair findings in individuals with Proteus syndrome.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted of individuals with clinical features of Proteus syndrome and a confirmed pathogenic variant in AKT1 evaluated between November 1996 and June 2019 at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center. Medical records were rev

The purpose of this study was to report developmental glaucoma and pseudopapilledema in a patient with Proteus syndrome. We defined the presence of developmental glaucoma, right pseudopapilledema and myopia in a 4.5-year-old patient with Proteus syndrome. Marked right hemihypertrophy, lipoma, macrodactyly, and asymmetry of the limbs were observed on systemic examination. A cavernoma was also detected in magnetic resonance imaging of the brain. The patient underwent bilateral goniotomy surgery due to glaucoma. The surgical outcomes were satisfactory in both eyes. In conclusions developmental gl

INTRODUCTION: The Proteus syndrome is a rare genetic disease which is characterized by the overgrowth of tissues, especially bone, connective and adipose tissue. This condition is related to a somatic mosaic activating mutation in the AKT1 oncogene.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 25-year-old man, diagnosed with the Proteus syndrome at the age of 6 months. He exhibited an asymmetric overgrowth of the extremities leading to bilateral amputation of the legs at the age of 10 years. He was hospitalized for acute respiratory failure due to a bronchopulmonary infection. Severe bullous pulmonar

Proteus syndrome, which is a reference to the ancient Greek god Proteus, the Polymorphous, was called to the attention of pediatricians. Recognition of this syndrome has been difficult because of the variability of the syndrome's manifestations and because of its rarity. We describe a rare case of Proteus syndrome and we discuss its differential diagnosis. Our case presents with hemi facial hypertrophy, scrotal tongue, enamel hyperplasia as well as differential in the size of the dentition on both sides of the arch.

The Proteus syndrome is a congenital disorder of growth regulation affecting tissues of mesodermal and ectodermal origin. It is expressed as hemihypertrophy, hemimegalencephaly, muscular overgrowth, verrucous epidermal nevi, haemangiomas and bony dysplasias. Muscle biopsies were examined at 7 and 10 yr of age from a girl with this disease. Several cytoarchitectural alterations of myofibres, proliferation of sarcolemmal nuclei, and other myopathic changes were demonstrated in regions adjacent to other with normal myofibres; the boundaries did not correspond to fascicular margins. A perinuclear

A male patient followed from the age of 3 to 25 years was eventually diagnosed as having Proteus syndrome. He was born with linear epidermal nevi of the neck and forearm and presented with macrodactyly of the right hand and progressive hemihypertrophy of the right lower limb recurring after multiple reduction operations. The bone ends showed disorderly overgrowth of hyaline and fibrocartilage mixed with collagen and bone, and early differential diagnoses included Ollier's disease. The child also had vertebral anomalies, scoliosis, a bony protrusion of the cranial vertex, and strabismus. In the

The Proteus syndrome (PS) and the Bannayan-Zonana syndrome (BZS) both have multiple hamartomata as prominent features. Hemihypertrophy, macrodactyly, exostoses, skin lesions, scoliosis, and sporadic occurrence are seen in PS, whereas patients with BZS have macrocephaly and related craniofacial findings. BZS has been observed in families as an autosomal dominant trait. Although the two syndromes can be distinguished in most patients, there are features in common to both that may pose a diagnostic dilemma in an isolated case. We report the case of a 3-year-old girl with macrocephaly, macrodactyl

A new disorder describing multiple hamartomas distinct from neurofibromatosis and Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome was first reported in 1979. It was named Proteus syndrome after the Greek god Proteus, the polymorphous, who could change his shape at will to avoid capture. The clinical manifestations are extensive, including cranial exostoses; progressive enlargement, asymmetry and disfigurement of the skull; macrocephaly; exostoses of the ear canals, nasal bridge, and alveolar ridge; partial gigantism of the hands or feet, asymmetry of the limbs, plantar hyperplasia, hemangiomas, lipomas, lymp

The case of a 4-year-old female affected by partial gigantism of the feet, syndactyly and polydactyly, partial right hemihypertrophy of buttock and lower limb, warty hyperpigmented nevus and vulvar lipoma is described. The Authors discuss about the Proteus syndrome, pointing out its rarity, the polymorphism and the problems of differential diagnosis with the Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome and with other congenital hamartomatous disorders.

Compartment syndrome is an orthopedic emergency with a multitude of etiologies. Although it is most commonly associated with trauma to the extremity, hematoma and infection are 2 rare etiologies of insidious compartment syndrome. Proteus mirabilis is an opportunistic gram-negative species that can infect the respiratory tract, urinary tract, and open wounds. The authors present the case of a 69-year-old woman who developed tissue necrosis and compartment syndrome secondary to an untreated hematoma infected by P mirabilis. This case involves an atypical presentation caused by an untreated infec

Proteus syndrome (PS) is a rare, highly polymorphous and complex disorder characterized by assymetric and/or disproportional overgrowth of limbs, hamartomas and vascular deformations. Typically, the first signs of PS appear between 6 and 18 months of age, are subtle and might be overlooked. We report a case of a 17 year old boy which was first diagnozed with PS after left limb amputation in 2021 (age of 14), though retrospectively the first signs of left hand enlargement appeared at 18 months. At the age of 3 years vascular surgery of venous malformation on his left leg was performed, molecula

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Proteus syndrome, caused by a mosaic activating AKT1 variant, typically presents in toddlers with progressive, asymmetric overgrowth of the skin and bones. We aimed to define the spectrum of dermatologic disease in individuals with genetically confirmed Proteus syndrome.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of records from dermatologic examinations of individuals evaluated at the NIH with a molecular diagnosis of Proteus syndrome. The types, prevalence, and localization of dermatologic findings were assessed.
RESULTS: Fifty-one individuals (29 males, 22 females,

Proteus syndrome is one of the very rare syndromes with occurrence of cerebriform connective tissue nevus. The aim of the present manuscript was to present a case of Proteus syndrome in an unusual facial location, which to the best of our knowledge, is being reported for the first time. The unusual occurrence further strengthens the mosaical basis of its etiopathogenesis.

Proteus syndrome is an extremely rare genetic disorder characterized by an asymmetrical overgrowth of skin, bones, muscles, fatty tissues, and blood and lymphatic vessels. We present a case of a six-year-old boy with proteus syndrome who underwent bone scintigraphy for suspected osteomyelitis. Bone scintigraphy ruled out osteomyelitis and suggested cellulitis. In addition, it demonstrated striking characteristic deformities, which need to be emphasized. Knowledge of these findings will avoid misinterpretation of bone scintigraphy in patients with proteus syndrome.

We report 3 patients with Proteus syndrome (PS) who died suddenly from pulmonary embolism (PE). The first patient was a male diagnosed with PS at 12 years who had varicose veins, portal vein thrombosis, right iliac vein occlusion and recurrent PE. At age 25 years, he was admitted to the hospital with a severe headache. Despite therapeutic doses of warfarin, investigations for an acute episode of breathlessness showed PE and he was unable to be resuscitated. The second case was a 9-year-old male with PS who collapsed at home and could not be revived. Autopsy revealed that the cause of death was
