Serial proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy of the brain in children undergoing cardiac surgery.

We used proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy to study 11 children (age < 8 years) with congenital heart disease undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass to determine whether low (10 +/- 4; n = 6) vs high (20 +/- 4; n = 5) perfusate hematocrits during bypass resulted in changes in brain metabolites which correlate with neurologic injury. Long and short echo time single voxel magnetic resonance spectroscopy in occipital gray matter and neurologic assessment were performed preoperatively and 2 and 5 days postoperatively. We also determined whether prolonged periods at low flow rates during bypass affe

Quantitative proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy of cerebral metabolic disturbances in patients with MELAS.

Four patients with clinically and genetically defined MELAS were examined using quantitative localized proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy of the brain. Acute and chronic lesions were located in the occipital lobe and mostly characterized by strongly elevated concentrations of lactate (Lac) and glucose (GIc) as well as severely reduced concentrations of total N-acetylaspartyl compounds (tNAA, neuroaxonal markers), glutamate (Glu), and total creatine. These findings indicate a high degree of nonoxidative glycolysis reflecting either impaired oxidative energy metabolism or the use of anaerobi

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy in an Italian family with spinocerebellar ataxia type 1.

Linkage and DNA analysis, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, and single-voxel proton MR spectroscopy were obtained in 10 members of an Italian kindred with spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 (SCA1). The size of the basis pontis, cerebellar hemispheres, middle cerebellar peduncles, and medulla oblongata were decreased in 4 members carrying the SCA1 gene, compared with 6 unaffected subjects. Diffuse signal changes in the pons and cerebellum were observed only in the carrier with the longest disease duration and greatest disability. The N-acetylaspartate/creatine ratio and the choline/creatine ratio in

Prediction of viability of porcine neurocysticercosis with proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy: correlation with histopathology.

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is the most frequent parasitic disease of central nervous system. In our earlier study, we had observed creatine [(creatine + phosphocreatine); (tCr)] on ex vivo proton MR spectroscopy (1H MRS) in some of the cysticercus cyst fluid samples obtained from swine's brain parenchyma. In current study, swine brains of freshly slaughtered animals naturally infected with NCC were subjected to ex vivo magnetic resonance (MR) imaging on a 1.5Tesla MR system. Cysticercus cysts (n = 12) were removed from these brains and were labeled depending upon presence or absence of edema aro

Discrimination of brain abscess and cystic tumor by in vivo proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

Proton magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopy was evaluated for the differentiation of brain abscesses and cystic brain tumors. Proton MR spectroscopy was performed in vivo in two patients with brain abscess and eight patients with various cystic brain tumors (anaplastic astrocytoma, glioblastoma, and metastatic brain tumor). MR imaging with contrast medium demonstrated ring-like enhanced mass lesions in all patients. The various resonance peaks in proton MR spectra were assigned to metabolites according to chemical shifts. Treatment of the cystic brain lesions was based on the information from

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) for the evaluation of treatment of brain tumours.

We investigated metabolic changes in brain tumours following treatment, using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy. In meningiomas, effective therapeutic embolisation led to an acute increase in lactate. In radiosensitive tumours such as malignant lymphoma, a decrease in lactate and in increase in N-acetyl-aspartate occurred after radiotherapy, which preceded changes observed on magnetic resonance imaging. On the other hand, no significant changes in spectral patterns were observed in malignant gliomas resistant to therapy. Tissue characterisation of brain tumours by spectral patterns on pro

Proton and phosphorus magnetic resonance spectroscopy of the healthy human breast at 7 T.

In vivo water- and fat-suppressed 1 H magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and 31 P magnetic resonance adiabatic multi-echo spectroscopic imaging were performed at 7 T in duplicate in healthy fibroglandular breast tissue of a group of eight volunteers. The transverse relaxation times of 31 P metabolites were determined, and the reproducibility of 1 H and 31 P MRS was investigated. The transverse relaxation times for phosphoethanolamine (PE) and phosphocholine (PC) were fitted bi-exponentially, with an added short T2 component of 20 ms for adenosine monophosphate, resulting in values of 199 ±

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy in the evaluation of infiltration zone of cerebral alveolar echinococcosis.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral alveolar echinococcosis (CAE) grows infiltratively like a malignant tumor, causing great harm to the human body. It is possible to display mass lesions of CAE using various imaging systems, but regarding the infiltrating proliferation active regions, it is difficult to evaluate its actual range using conventional magnetic resonance imaging (cMRI). This research focused on proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)HMRS) techniques to find the mass and infiltration zone of CAE. We explored the marginal zone (MZ) of CAE nearly close to the actual infiltrating scope, to provi

Utility of in vitro proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy in aetiological characterisation of brain abscesses.

PURPOSE: Brain abscesses often present an aetiological dilemma. Microscopy is insensitive and culture techniques are time consuming. Hence, a new rapid technique in vitro Proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (1HMRS) was evaluated for its usefulness in the identification of aetiology of brain abscesses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 39 pus specimens from brain abscesses were subjected to in vitro 1HMRS. These pus specimens were also processed by conventional culture methods. The spectral patterns generated by in vitro 1HMRS were further correlated with culture results. RESULTS: Pus spec

Brain proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy and neuromuscular pathology in a patient with GM1 gangliosidosis.

The authors report the clinical, neuroradiologic, and neuromuscular pathological findings in a patient with GM1 gangliosidosis. The proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy, previously reported in a single patient with GM1 gangliosidosis, detected a mild reduction of N-acetylaspartate, consistent with relative paucity of axons and neurons and increased levels of myoinositol suggestive of gliotic white matter changes along with the accumulation of an additional compound that could represent either guanidinoacetate or Gal beta 1-6Gal beta 1-4)GlcNAc, an oligosaccharide previously isolated from the

In vivo proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy in a known case of intracranial hydatid cyst.

We are presenting magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) findings of a known case of hydatid cyst operated twice in the past. A 22-years-old male patient had presented with recurrent symptoms of generalized seizures and raised intracranial tension. MRI with MRS of the lesion was performed that showed a recurrent loculated cystic lesion in right parieto-occipital lobe. MRS through the lesion was performed using repetition time (TR) of 1500 ms and time to echo (TE) of 135 ms using 2 x 2 x 2 cm voxel, from the margin of the lesion. MRS showed mildly elevated choline (Cho), depressed creatine (Cr)

A proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy investigation of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in acute mania.

BACKGROUND: Several neurochemical abnormalities have been reported in bipolar disorder (BD), but the exact mechanisms that underlie its pathophysiology remain to be elucidated. Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1HMRS) allows in vivo measurements of certain neurometabolites in the human brain. 1HMRS was used to investigate the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in bipolar subjects during a manic or mixed phase. N-acetyl-L-aspartate (NAA), choline-containing molecules (Cho), creatine plus phosphocreatine (Cr) and myoinositol (Ino) were measured. METHOD: Ten bipolar patients (nine mani

In vivo measurement of phenylalanine in human brain by proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

Disorders of the CNS are the major causes of morbidity and mortality observed in untreated subjects with phenylketonuria (PKU). A method to measure cerebral concentrations of phenylalanine (Phe) in vivo would greatly enhance the ability to investigate both the pathophysiology and the efficacy of therapy of this aminoacidopathy. Twelve image-guided localized proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic studies were performed in seven subjects with PKU using pulse sequences optimized to detect the aromatic protons of Phe. Ten control studies were also performed using a 2.1-Tesla Bruker Biospe

Use of proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy in detection and study of organic acidurias.

We used high-resolution proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to detect, identify, and study the major normal and abnormal organic acid metabolites in urine from patients with propionic acidemia, methylmalonic aciduria, branched-chain ketoaciduria, isovaleric acidemia, and glutaric aciduria type I. Characteristic and diagnostic spectra were obtained at 400 MHz for each disorder in all the patients studied and neutral and basic compounds, including amino acids and acylcarnitines, were also detected. The technique is rapid (10 min) and requires small samples (0.5 mL) and no preliminary

Maturation of limbic regions in Asperger syndrome: a preliminary study using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy and structural magnetic resonance imaging.

People with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD, including Asperger syndrome) may have developmental abnormalities in the amygdala-hippocampal complex (AHC). However, in vivo, age-related comparisons of both volume and neuronal integrity of the AHC have not yet been carried out in people with Asperger syndrome (AS) versus controls. We compared structure and metabolic activity of the right AHC of 22 individuals with AS and 22 healthy controls aged 10-50 years and examined the effects of age between groups. We used structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) to measure the volume of the AHC, and m

Brain abscess and glioblastoma identified by combined proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging--two case reports.

The differential diagnosis between brain abscesses and necrotic tumors such as glioblastomas is sometimes difficult to establish by conventional computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Combined proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) were used to establish the preoperative diagnosis of brain abscess and glioblastoma. DWI visualized the brain abscess as a homogeneous hyperintense lesion and 1H-MRS revealed the presence of acetate, lactate, and amino acids and the absence of the normal brain components. DWI sometimes sho
