The protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii is a serious cause of fetal mortality in sheep and goats. Oocysts, the parasite stage responsible for initiating infection, are produced following a primary infection in cats. A primary infection in pregnant sheep and goats can establish a placental and fetal infection which may result in fetal death and resorption, abortion or stillbirth. Diagnosis is aided by the clinical picture, the presence of characteristic small white necrotic foci in placental cotyledons, the possible presence of a mummified fetus and on fetal serology and histopathology. Protozoan parasites, such as Plasmodium, Leishmania, Toxoplasma, Cryptosporidium, and Trypanosoma, are causative agents of health-threatening diseases in both humans and animals, leading to significant health risks and socioeconomic losses globally. The development of effective therapeutic and prevention strategies for protozoan-caused diseases requires a full understanding of the pathogenesis and protective events occurring in infected hosts. Interferons (IFNs) are a family of cytokines with diverse biological effects in host antimicrobial defense and disease pathogenesis, including protozoan

Metabolism of the third component of complement (C3) and IgG was measured in rats before and during infection with the hemosporidium agent Babesia rodhaina. In the course of infection, hypocomplementemia and immune complex nephritis developed. During babesial infection, in most animals the half-life of C3 fell sharply, as did serum levels of C3; the catabolic rate for C3 sharply increased, whereas the synthetic rate sharply decreased. In contrast, the catabolic rate for IgG remained unchanged. The alteration in the metabolism of C3 in the face of nonparallel changes in IgG metabolism suggests

Entomopathogenic protozoans are, to a large extent, host specific, and through acute or chronic infections they negatively alter host reproductive fitness, metabolism, immune response, juvenile hormonal balance, and host development. Hence, these entomopathogens are well-suited to reduce populations of stored product insect pests. The first step towards achieving successful suppression, natural or applied, of storage insect pest populations is the detection for these entomopathogenic protozoans in their habitats. Therefore, a preliminary survey of naturally occurring protozoan infections in st

Protozoa exert a serious global threat of growing concern to human, and animal, and there is a need for the advancement of novel therapeutic strategies to effectively treat or mitigate the impact of associated diseases. Omega polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω-PUFAs), including Omega-3 (ω-3) and omega-6 (ω-6), are constituents derived from various natural sources, have gained significant attention for their therapeutic role in parasitic infections and a variety of essential structural and regulatory functions in animals and humans. Both ω-3 and ω-6 decrease the growth and survival rate of parasite

A major advance in antimalarial drug discovery has been the shift towards cell-based phenotypic screening, with notable progress in the screening of compounds against the asexual blood stage, liver stage, and gametocytes. A primary method for drug target deconvolution in Plasmodium falciparum is in vitro evolution of compound-resistant parasites followed by whole-genome scans. Several of the most promising antimalarial drug targets, such as translation elongation factor 2 (eEF2) and phenylalanine tRNA synthetase (PheRS), have been identified or confirmed using this method. One drawback of this

Between March and October 1987, the prevalence of infection by Blastocystis hominis and other intestinal protozoan, their relationship with the age and sex of the hosts, and the percentage of infected persons in family groups were determined in riverside communities of Valdivia River Basin, Chile. One or more intestinal protozoan species were determined in 72.5% of the examined persons. The prevalence was greater for B. hominis (61.8%). The prevalences of B. hominis, Endolimax nana and Entamoeba coli were greater in relation to the age of the host. The sex of the host and prevalence of infecti

INTRODUCTION: Cryptosporidium spp. and Cystoisospora spp. are significant unicellular parasites that cause gastrointestinal infections in both humans and animals globally. Among these, Cryptosporidium felis and Cystoisospora felis are particularly important for feline health and pose potential zoonotic risks, especially for individuals with compromised immune systems. Kazakhstan, characterized by its diverse climate zones and an increasing population of pets, provides an excellent context for studying the epidemiology and genetic diversity of these parasites. In Kazakhstan, the mandatory regis

A wide range of protozoan pathogens either transmitted by vectors (Plasmodium, Babesia, Leishmania and Trypanosoma), by contaminated food or water (Entamoeba and Giardia), or by sexual contact (Trichomonas) invade various organs in the body and cause prominent human diseases, such as malaria, babesiosis, leishmaniasis, trypanosomiasis, diarrhea, and trichomoniasis. Humans are frequently exposed to multiple pathogens simultaneously, or sequentially in the high-incidence regions to result in co-infections. Consequently, synergistic or antagonistic pathogenic effects could occur between microbes
