HIV Testing and Risks of Sexual Behavior among HIV-Negative Men Who Have Sex with Men in Ningbo, China.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) testing is confirmed as a preventive strategy for HIV control. However, the testing rate and risk behaviors of HIV-negative men who have sex with men (MSM) remain unclear. We aimed to examine factors associated with HIV testing and high-risk behaviors among HIV-negative MSM. From July 2016 to June 2017, participants were recruited by snowball sampling from WeChat groups, bars, and other venues. HIV testing was performed to exclude HIV-positive MSM. Face-to-face questionnaires regarding HIV testing and high-risk behaviors were conducted; 988 MSM were included,

Mortality after diagnosis of psychiatric disorders and co-occurring substance use disorders among HIV-infected patients.

We examined the associations between psychiatric diagnoses, substance use disorders, health services, and mortality among 9751 HIV-infected patients (≥14 years old) in a large, private medical care program, in a retrospective cohort design over a 12-year period. All study data were extracted from computerized clinical and administrative databases. Results showed that 25.4% (n = 2472) of the 9751 study subjects had received a psychiatric diagnosis (81.1% had major depression, 17.1% had panic disorder, 14.2% had bipolar disorder, and 8.1% had anorexia/bulimia); and 25.5% (n = 2489) had been diag

Pediatric case of trichobezoar leading to gastric perforation.

Trichobezoars, or hairballs, are rare gastrointestinal masses often associated with psychiatric disorders like trichotillomania and trichophagia. Mostly seen among young females, they can cause severe gastrointestinal complications, including gastric ulceration and, subsequently, perforation. We reported a case of a young female with abdominal pain and vomiting diagnosed with a perforated gastric ulcer secondary to a bezoar. After emergency surgery and postoperative care, psychiatric evaluation confirmed trichotillomania with trichophagia which ultimately aided in the development of a comprehe

A comparison of prescribed medication in learning disability patients before and after resettlement from hospital into the community.

The use of prescribed medication was examined in 34 people with learning disability who underwent a planned resettlement from a hospital into the community. No significant differences were found in the number of subjects receiving antipsychotic, antimuscarinic, antidepressant, and anticonvulsant medication, lithium preparations, and non-psychoactive medication, just prior to discharge and 1 year after discharge. This study indicates that long-stay hospitalised adults with moderate, severe or profound mental retardation can successfully be relocated into the community--in spite of suffering fro

HIV-infected psychiatric patients: beyond confidentiality.

The AIDS epidemic calls for an ethical analysis of conflicting obligations surrounding HIV-infected psychiatric patients and confidentiality, as well as issues that go beyond confidentiality. Although laws pertaining to HIV infection have been enacted in a number of states, these statutes leave much discretion to health professionals. The ethical principle known as "the harm principle" can permit disclosure of confidential information and detention or isolation of psychiatric patients who pose a threat of infecting other patients. From an ethical point of view, however, the circumstances under

[Autonomic vascular asthenia as a component of the psycho- autonomic syndrome in slowly progressing schizophrenia and cyclothymic disorder in young patients].

Investigated were 55 patients with slow-progredient schizophrenia and cyclothymia aged 17 to 25 with the syndrome of vaso-autonomic dystonia (VAD) accompanying their mental disorder. VAD was found in 80% of the depressive cases, hypomaniac syndromes and psychopath-like (residual) states. Each of these disorders correlated with a distinct type of VAD. In a majority of the cases VAD manifested after several years of mental disease. The study provides grounds for combined psychotropic and rational psychotherapy with an early social rehabilitating assistance. The study substantiated the necessity

Trichotillomania and trichobezoar: a clinical practice insight with report of illustrative case.

Untreated trichophagia secondary to trichotillomania is a potentially life-threatening condition. Taking a thorough family and social history, most notably with the aid of a genogram or family tree, can aid in including this disorder in the differential diagnosis. This case presentation describes a unique occurrence of untreated trichotillomania in a female adolescent that led to formation of a trichobezoar requiring emergent surgical intervention and follow-up psychiatric treatment. This case highlights osteopathic medicine's fundamental concept of treating the whole person rather than just s

Natural animal models of human psychiatric conditions: assessment of mechanism and validity.

1. The classic animal models for human psychiatric conditions involves rodents. As prey species, their normal behaviors of avoidance would be considered pathological in humans and dogs. Hence, such models may not be homologous for similar behaviors found in psychiatric pathology in humans. 2. Dogs exhibit pathological behavioral conditions that may be equivalent to certain human psychiatric conditions. These canine conditions appear spontaneously or endogenously in the absence of genetic or neurochemcial manipulation, and as such, may be homologous to the human condition. 3. If canine conditio

Development of scales to screen for eight common psychiatric disorders.

The present study was designed to create a group of scales from the items on the Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90) to identify common psychiatric diagnoses. Subjects were 1457 adult psychiatric outpatients who completed the Symptom Checklist-90 and a structured diagnostic interview at the time of their initial evaluation. A combination of rational and empirical test construction methods was used to create the SCL-90 Diagnostic Scales, item sets that identify eight common psychiatric conditions: major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, antisocial personality disorder, somatization disorde

Management of Psychiatric Conditions in Patients With Comorbid Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome: A Literature Review and Case Vignette.

Importance: Disorders of the autonomic nervous system are relatively common and have a significant impact on quality of life, offer very subtle diagnostic clues, and often mimic other disease processes, including certain psychiatric disorders. Pharmacologic treatment for psychiatric conditions in this group of patients can also be complicated by the pathophysiology of the various syndromes. Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is the final common pathway of a heterogenous group of underlying disorders that display similar characteristics. Observations: The current literature regard

Heatstroke in a chronic schizophrenic patient treated with high-potency neuroleptics.

A fatal case of heatstroke occurred in a chronic schizophrenic patient treated with high-potency neuroleptics. The author differentiates heatstroke from other hyperthermic syndromes related to treatment with major tranquilizers and suggests that an awareness of factors that predispose psychiatric patients to the development of heatstroke may aid in its prevention.

Psychiatric disorder-weight associations and the moderating effect of sex in an outpatient psychiatric sample.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined the association between weight and psychiatric disorders in psychiatric treatment samples, and no known studies in treatment samples have examined potential moderators of the psychiatric illness-weight relationship. The aim of the present study is to examine if weight is associated with specific mood and anxiety disorders in a psychiatric treatment-seeking sample, and if a person's sex moderate any of these associations. Greater knowledge of particular subgroups experiencing psychiatric illness-obesity comorbidity could aid in better providing personalized

[Investigation of personal niche as basis of supportive psychotherapy].

According to the ecological theory of Willi 1996, people create and maintain their psychic wellbeing through constant shaping of their environment, i.e. setting up a personal niche. The personal niche in turn responds to, guides and challenges further personal development. This study explores what kind of solutions single patients with psychiatric invalidity can find in order to form their environment as a niche in which they may develop effectiveness and use it for their psychic regulation. 30 people were questioned with a semi-structured interview: they were patients of a psychiatric out-pat

Two cases of hypomania in AIDS.

HIV disease often leads to neuropsychiatric disturbance, either through direct infection of the brain by the virus or through CNS disease secondary to immunodeficiency. Neuropsychiatric complications of AIDS and AIDS-related disorders may present clinically as acute or chronic organic mental syndromes, or may mimic functional psychiatric illness, in particular depression, anxiety, or psychotic states. Two cases of hypomanic states in homosexual men suffering from AIDS are reported. Neither of the two men had a personal or family history of affective disorder. In one man, hypomanic symptoms wer

Prevalence of depression and anxiety disorders in HIV-positive outpatients in rural Tanzania.

HIV/AIDS is associated with significant mental health morbidity in high-income countries, and depression associated with HIV/AIDS has been linked with faster disease progression and reduced drug adherence. However, research on mental health is scarce in sub-Saharan Africa where infection levels are highest. This cross-sectional study of 220 HIV-positive outpatients at a dedicated Tanzanian HIV/AIDS care centre assessed sociodemographics, clinical variables and prevalence of ICD-10 common mental health diagnoses via a standardised psychiatric questionnaire (the Clinical Interview Schedule-Revis
