The purpose of this article is to present the results of a study conducted in a Canadian medium-security forensic psychiatric facility. The primary objective of this qualitative research was to describe and comprehend how fear influences nurse-patient interactions in a forensic psychiatric setting. Eighteen semistructured interviews with nurses were used as the primary source of data for analysis. In brief, the results from this research indicate, as other researchers have demonstrated, that within this highly regimented context, nurses are socialized to incorporate representations of the pati

The aim of this study was to determine if community psychiatric nurse (CPN) aftercare for 1 year improved the 5-year outcome in patients following inpatient treatment for alcohol dependence. A 5-year follow-up study, observer blind, with non-random allocation of subjects to aftercare by CPN for 1 year or standard outpatient care, was used. Subjects had all received inpatient treatment for 6 weeks in a rural alcohol treatment unit. Subjects were traced and assessed in the community 5 years after the index admission. The participants consisted of 127 white male alcoholics. All were first admissi

Over the last 20 years research has convincingly demonstrated that the illness, schizophrenia, is amenable to social and environmental influence (Leff et al. 1982; Falloon et al. 1985; Hogarty et al. 1986). The impetus for the research is the fact that, at best, genetic inheritance explains only 70% of the disorder's aetiology. The findings of the studies allow certain basic but important principles to be formulated. These are that some people inherit a genetic predisposition or "vulnerability" to schizophrenia which develops either in response to the acute stress of "life events" or the chron

Individuals with serious mental illnesses (SMI) who are incarcerated pose major treatment challenges for both correctional personnel and healthcare providers, yet deserve the same high standards of care as those in traditional mental health facilities. The literature references these challenges as types of mental health treatment disparities, and calls for improvement measures from clinicians, researchers, policy-makers, and advocates. From the standpoint of psychiatric-mental health (PMH) nursing, this paper explores, examines, and offers some contemporary clinical and practice perspectives f

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric nurses often face patient safety incidents that can cause physical and emotional harm, even leading to s econd victim syndrome and staff shortages. Rumination-a common response after nurses suffer a patient safety event-may play a specific role between the second victim experience and turnover intention. Understanding these mechanisms is crucial for supporting psychiatric nurses and retaining psychiatric nursing resources.
OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to explore the associations among second victim experience, rumination, and turnover intention in psychiatric nurses and

BACKGROUND: The shortage of psychiatric nurses is a major healthcare challenge. Lack of interest (LOI) contributes to the shortage of psychiatric nurses. Nonetheless, there are limited studies in this area. The present study was conducted to explore nurses' experiences of the causes of their LOI in working in psychiatric wards.
METHODS: This qualitative study was conducted in 2016-2019 using the content analysis approach. Participants were 27 nurses purposively recruited with maximum variation from the psychiatric wards of three referral hospitals in Iran. Data were collected via unstructured

PURPOSE: Previous research has demonstrated that self-compassion improved sleep in geriatric samples. However, this may be due to an uncontrolled influence from self-focus, or interaction between self-compassion and self-focus. This study examines whether these findings apply to psychiatric nurses.
DESIGN AND METHODS: Demographics, sleep disturbances, self-compassion, and self-focus of 404 psychiatric nurses were assessed. Hierarchical multiple regression was used to predict sleep disturbances.
FINDINGS: Analyzes revealed that working more night shifts, less self-compassion, and rumination p

OBJECTIVE: Workplace violence (WPV) is common in mental health services in China, but its multi-center prevalence measured using standardized rating scales has rarely been reported. This study aimed to explore the prevalence of verbal and physical violence against nurses working in psychiatric hospitals and examine its independent socio-demographic correlates in China.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study conducted in 11 major psychiatric hospitals in China using a 9-item self-reported workplace violence scale.
RESULTS: A total of 1906 psychiatric nurses were recruited to participate in

OBJECTIVE: Disruptive behavior leading to seclusion or restraint increases with patients in a high-acuity stage of mental illness who have histories of aggressive behavior. The study examined whether greater nursing staff empathy skills and motivation reduced use of seclusion and restraint and whether empathy training can further this effect.
METHODS: In 1,098 nursing shifts in 2 six-month periods one year apart, hierarchical analyses examined the effects of nursing shift and patient characteristics, the effect for each shift of nurses' skill and motivation to use empathy, and whether empathy

The prevalence of smoking in psychiatric settings remains high. This study aims to describe the views of nurse managers in psychiatric inpatient settings regarding the provision of nicotine dependence treatment, and whether there were associations between such views and the provision of nicotine dependence treatment. A cross-sectional survey was mailed to all public psychiatric inpatient units in New South Wales, Australia, for completion by nurse managers. Of the identified 131 service units, 123 completed questionnaires were returned (94%). Patient-related factors were considered to have a h

BACKGROUND: People with mental health problems continue to present a disproportionately high risk of suicide. Despite the relevance of suicide to psychiatric/mental health (P/MH) nurses, there is a documented paucity of research in this substantive area undertaken by or referring specifically to P/MH nurses; there is currently no extant theory to guide P/MH nursing care of the suicidal person.
OBJECTIVES: Accordingly, this paper reports on a study undertaken to determine if P/MH nurses provide meaningful caring response to suicidal people, and if so how.
DESIGN: The study used a modified gro

Clinical judgment of psychiatric nurses was investigated using judgment analysis within the framework of social judgment theory. Nine nurses at a short-term psychiatric care facility made recommendations concerning restraint and seclusion for 80 patients described on paper in terms of 17 characteristics (cues). Nurses generally favored close observation of patients over seclusion and restraint, and information about current behavior and functioning had more impact on nurses' judgments than did patient history. Nurses had good insight into the nature of their own judgments. However, individual

People with mental disorders often experience unmet physical, psychological, and social health needs, contributing to reduced life expectancy. Although lifestyle programmes can promote health and wellbeing, their implementation within non-profit mental health member organisations remains limited. This qualitative descriptive study, reported according to COREQ guidelines, explored experiences of implementing a person-centred lifestyle programme within a member organisation and its potential contribution to health-promoting and recovery-oriented support. Participants took part across two program

BACKGROUND: Concerns about recent changes in acute in-patient mental health care environments have led to fears about staff stress and poor morale in acute in-patient mental health care staff.
AIM: To review the prevalence of low staff morale, stress, burnout, job satisfaction and psychological well-being amongst staff working in in-patient psychiatric wards.
METHOD: Systematic review.
RESULTS: Of 34 mental health studies identified, 13 were specific to acute in-patient settings, and 21 were specific to other non-specified ward-based samples. Most studies did not find very high levels of st

With six separate wards accommodating more than 1,600 patients, V Nursing Center (VNC) is a long-stay psychiatric nursing center in eastern Taiwan. During 2001 to 2003, 39 shigellosis cases occurred in VNC. Different from the notion that most cases of shigellosis are caused by Shigella sonnei, all except one of these cases were caused by S. flexneri, with the remaining one caused by an S. sonnei isolate. O-antigen serotyping showed that the 38 S. flexneri strains were of either type 1a (n = 20) or 4a (n = 18), two less prevalent serotypes in Taiwan. NotI-based pulsed-field gel electrophoresis
