The neural representation of plural discourse entities.

Little is known about the underlying neural structures that mediate the generation and tracking of discourse referents. In two functional magnetic resonance imaging experiments, we examined the neural structures involved in generating and maintaining the representations of multiple referents. Experiment 1 used two-sentence discourses with singular and plural conditions linking back to single or conjoined subjects. In Experiment 2, conjunction type was manipulated in order to keep the number of discourse entities constant across the discourse. Both experiments found greater activation in the su

Lexical processing in individuals with high-functioning autism and Asperger's disorder.

The presence or absence of clinically delayed language development prior to 3 years of age is a key, but contentious, clinical feature distinguishing autism from Asperger's disorder. The aim of this study was to examine language processing in children with high-functioning autism (HFA) and Asperger's disorder (AD) using a task which taps lexical processing, a core language ability. Eleven individuals with HFA, 11 with AD and 11 typically developing (TD) individuals completed a masked priming task, a psycholinguistic paradigm that directly examines lexical processes. Within-group analyses revea

[Biological and behavioral rhythms of patients with schizophrenia. Preliminary study].

Relying on the ethological model for the collection of data (ethogram), psycholinguistic methods (Cloze procedure, type token ratio) and chronobiological techniques, the present study tests the hypothesis of behavioural, speech and biological ultradian or circadian rhythms in certain types of schizophrenic patients after a 2 week study. Six daily, direct and meticulous 25 minutes observations of the behaviour and speech of four schizophrenics show that stereotyped motor or verbal behaviour does not always fluctuate at random; certain behavioural patterns recur regularly at fixed intervals, acc

The development of preschool children of heroin-addicted mothers: a controlled study.

Disturbances of growth and behavior in infants and toddlers of women addicted to heroin during pregnancy have been reported in uncontrolled studies. In this study, 3- to 6-year-old children of heroin-addicted mothers were compared to three other groups matched for age, race, sex, birth weight, and socioeconomic status. Heroin-exposed children weighed less and were shorter than those in the comparison groups; 14% had a head circumference below the third percentile. Heroin-exposed children were rated by parents as less well adjusted than control children and they differed significantly in percep

The nature of the phonological processing in French dyslexic children: evidence for the phonological syllable and linguistic features' role in silent reading and speech discrimination.

This study investigated the status of phonological representations in French dyslexic children (DY) compared with reading level- (RL) and chronological age-matched (CA) controls. We focused on the syllable's role and on the impact of French linguistic features. In Experiment 1, we assessed oral discrimination abilities of pairs of syllables that varied as a function of voicing, mode or place of articulation, or syllable structure. Results suggest that DY children underperform controls with a 'speed-accuracy' deficit. However, DY children exhibit some similar processing than those highlighted i

Grounding verbs in action: The facilitative effect of potential physical interactions with verbs.

Grounded cognition holds that a word's semantic representation is grounded in sensory-motor experiences. Much research has supported this account in relation to nouns, but less is known about verbs. The current research was designed to test the effect of grounded cognition with relation to action verbs. Accordingly, we developed a measure labeled potential physical interactions (PPI) aimed at capturing grounded content by measuring the number of physical objects an action verb can interact with. We first collected PPI ratings from 177 university students. Following this, a different group of 4

Affordance norms for 2825 concrete nouns.

Objects are commonly described based on their relations to other objects (e.g., associations, semantic similarity, etc.) or their physical features (e.g., birds have wings, feathers, etc.). However, objects can also be described in terms of their actionable properties (i.e., affordances), which reflect interactive relations between actors and objects. While several normed datasets have been developed to categorize various aspects of meaning (e.g., semantic features, cue-target associations, etc.), to date, norms for affordances have not been generated. We address this limitation by developing

Patterns of impairments in AOS and mechanisms of interaction between phonological and phonetic encoding.

PURPOSE: One reason why the diagnosis of apraxia of speech (AOS) and its underlying impairment are often debated may lie in the fact that most patients do not display pure patterns of AOS. Mixed patterns are clearly acknowledged at other levels of impairment (e.g., lexical-semantic and lexical-phonological), and they have contributed to debate about the degree of interaction between encoding levels; by contrast, mixed impairments and mechanisms of interaction are less acknowledged at the levels of phonological and phonetic processes. Here, the author aims at bringing together empirical evidenc

Understanding oral spelling: a review and synthesis.

This article reviews a number of studies that report discrepancies between written and oral spelling that cannot easily be explained in terms of deficits to modality-specific output routines. For instance, some patients appear to be 'surface dysgraphic' for oral spelling but 'phonological dysgraphic' for written spelling (e.g. Lesser, 1990). A model is proposed to account for these findings which contains the basic premise that the mappings between phonemes and letter names (in oral spelling) is generally non-arbitrary, whereas the mappings between phonemes and letter shapes (in written spelli

Word Reading and Spelling Processing and Acquired Dyslexia post Unilateral Stroke.

This study investigates the performance of adults with cerebrovascular lesion in the right hemisphere (RHL) or left hemisphere (LHL) in word reading (TLPP) and spelling (TEPP) tasks based on the dual-route models. A total of 85 adults were assessed, divided into three groups: 10 with RHL, 15 with LHL, and 60 neurologically healthy ones. The performance of the three groups was compared in terms of the characteristics of the words (regularity, frequency, and length) and pseudowords (length), error types, and psycholinguistic effects. A cluster analysis was performed to investigate the profiles o

Language experience in LSF development: Behavioral evidence from a sentence repetition task.

In psycholinguistics and clinical linguistics, the Sentence Repetition Task (SRT) is known to be a valuable tool to screen general language abilities in both spoken and signed languages. This task enables users to reliably and quickly assess linguistic abilities at different levels of linguistic analysis such as phonology, morphology, lexicon, and syntax. To evaluate sign language proficiency in deaf children using French Sign Language (LSF), we designed a new SRT comprising 20 LSF sentences. The task was administered to a cohort of 62 children- 34 native signers (6;09-12 years) and 28 non-nat

Revisiting the noun bias: How frequency explains cross-linguistic differences in noun and verb production across early childhood.

Frequency of occurrence is one of the main drivers of children's early vocabularies. However, multiple authors have concluded that it fails to account for one of the most important phenomena in word learning-the order in which children acquire nouns and verbs. Across many languages, there is an early noun bias despite nouns occurring far less frequently than verbs in caregiver speech. In this study we use large-scale caregiver-child corpora and a computational model to reexamine noun and verb learning in English, German, Spanish, and Mandarin. Our results show clear evidence for variations in

Linking Behavioral and Computational Approaches to Better Understand Variant Vowel Pronunciations in Developing Readers.

The overarching goal of the new Florida State University/Haskins Laboratory/University of Connecticut Learning Disability (LD) Hub project is to align computational and behavioral theories of individual word reading development more closely with the challenges of learning to read a quasi-regular orthography (i.e., English) for both typically developing (TD) children and, more specifically, children with dyslexia. Our LD Hub adopts an integrated approach to better understand the neurocognitive bases of individual differences in word reading development by specifically examining the experiential

Validating presupposed versus focused text information.

There is extensive evidence that readers continually validate discourse accuracy and congruence, but that they may also overlook conspicuous text contradictions. Validation may be thwarted when the inaccurate ideas are embedded sentence presuppositions. In four experiments, we examined readers' validation of presupposed ("given") versus new text information. Throughout, a critical concept, such as a truck versus a bus, was introduced early in a narrative. Later, a character stated or thought something about the truck, which therefore matched or mismatched its antecedent. Furthermore, truck was

Beyond Auditory Sensory Processing Deficits: Lexical Tone Perception Deficits in Chinese Children With Developmental Dyslexia.

Increasing evidence suggests that children with developmental dyslexia exhibit a deficit not only at the segmental level of phonological processing but also, by extension, at the suprasegmental level. However, it remains unclear whether such a suprasegmental phonological processing deficit is due to a difficulty in processing acoustic cues of speech rhythm, such as rise time and intensity. This study set out to investigate to what extent suprasegmental phonological processing (i.e., Cantonese lexical tone perception) and rise time sensitivity could distinguish Chinese children with dyslexia fr

[Rehabilitation programs for patients with cochlear implants as a function of acquired experience in logopedics for deaf children].

Rehabilitation of patients after cochlear implant surgery should be planified along the same basic principles as those that have been envolved for the adaptation of patients to a classical hearing aid or acoustic prosthesis. When this is adapted to a patient with a sensorineural hearing loss, the quality of hearing differs from that of normal hearing because the pathological inner ear introduces distorsions. The patient therefore has to be trained to equate the new auditory sensations with those he had previously, which is basically the same situation as with a cochlear implant. Some profoundl

Mime Initiation Latency for Object Photographs: A Behavioral Motor Norm.

As embodied cognition takes root in the cognitive sciences (e.g., Borghi, 2007), motor affordance factors become increasingly important to consider when designing experiments, selecting stimuli, and controlling sources of variance. Previous measurements of motor affordance factors have relied on subjective ratings (e.g., "Could you easily mime the action …"; Magnié et al., 2003). In the current study we used a behavioral measure-mime initiation latency (MIL)-the time that it takes for a participant to initiate pantomimes in response to photographs of manipulable objects. We found MIL was moder

Spatiotemporal characteristics of the neural representation of event concepts.

Events are a fundamentally important part of our understanding of the world. How lexical concepts denoting events are represented in the brain remains controversial. We conducted two experiments using event and object nouns matched on a range of psycholinguistic variables, including concreteness, to examine spatial and temporal characteristics of event concepts. Both experiments used magnitude and valence tasks on event and object nouns. The fMRI experiment revealed a distributed set of regions for events, including the angular gyrus, anterior temporal lobe, and posterior cingulate across task
