Degree of somatoform and psychological dissociation in dissociative disorder is correlated with reported trauma.

In this study, the prevalence and severity of traumatic experiences as reported by patients with dissociative disorders and with other DSM-IV psychiatric diagnoses were compared. Furthermore, the predictive value of emotional, physical, and sexual trauma with respect to somatoform and psychological dissociation was analyzed. In contrast with comparison patients, dissociative disorder patients reported severe and multifaceted traumatization. Physical and sexual trauma predicted somatoform dissociation, sexual trauma predicted psychological dissociation as well. According to the memories of the

Effects of childhood trauma on psychological functioning in adults sexually abused as children.

Standardized symptom measures were used to determine the effect of childhood trauma experiences on adults sexually victimized as children. One hundred eighty-eight sexually abused individuals were tested for mean scores for depression, self-esteem, general levels of trauma symptoms, sexual dysfunction, posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms, and dissociation. Childhood traumatic experiences (parents fighting, physical abuse by father or by mother, other childhood traumas) of a nonsexual nature correlated with increased symptom levels and accounted for significant changes in percentage of varia

The racial trauma task force: Clinical-community psychology approaches to healing racial trauma during COVID-19.

Due to an increase in media and news attention on anti-Black racism in 2020, the APA declared racism a pandemic as the CDC highlighted the challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, the work described in the current manuscript took place during what is referred to as a double pandemic for Black people in the United States. This paper discusses the impact of this period on a department and its students, the training students advocated for in response to the urgent need for more support for Black communities, and the approaches they used to address racial stress and trauma during this un

Psychological trauma and health-related quality of life following ventricular tachycardia ablation.

BACKGROUND: An implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) is a first-line treatment for ventricular tachycardia (VT); however, ICD shocks are associated with poorer health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and psychological well-being. Clinically, HRQoL and psychological trauma of ICD patients are often severe enough to be offered VT ablation. HRQoL and especially psychological trauma levels have not been evaluated in ICD recipients who underwent a VT ablation as compared to those ICD recipients who were treated medically. METHODS: 61 participants were enrolled. Participants completed measure

Relationship between trauma, psychological distress and help-seeking among corrective service workers.

BACKGROUND: Corrective service workers (CSWs) are at high risk of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health problems. Prevalence rates and help-seeking behaviours are under-researched within this population. AIMS: To assess rates of PTSD and distress, and identify predictors of intention to seek help, among workers at an Australian corrective service agency. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was used to collect data on staff demographics, employment, PTSD symptoms and current distress. Participants received a tailored feedback report including referral to relevant

Psychological factors intervening between childhood trauma and suicidality in first-episode psychosis.

Several studies have investigated childhood trauma (ChT) and suicidality in psychosis. However, psychological factors intervening between ChT and suicidality are not well understood. The aims of this study were to explore the roles of negative schema and rumination in the relationship between ChT and suicidality in first-episode psychosis (FEP). Participants were 306 patients with FEP who were enrolled in the Korean Early Psychosis Cohort Study, a prospective naturalistic observational cohort study. ChT, suicidality, negative schema, and rumination were evaluated using the Early Trauma Invento

Peripersonal Space and Bodily Self-Consciousness: Implications for Psychological Trauma-Related Disorders.

Peripersonal space (PPS) is defined as the space surrounding the body where we can reach or be reached by external entities, including objects or other individuals. PPS is an essential component of bodily self-consciousness that allows us to perform actions in the world (e.g., grasping and manipulating objects) and protect our body while interacting with the surrounding environment. Multisensory processing plays a critical role in PPS representation, facilitating not only to situate ourselves in space but also assisting in the localization of external entities at a close distance from our bodi

Suicidal Histories in Adults Experiencing Psychological Trauma: Exploring Vulnerability and Protective Factors.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify vulnerability and protective factors for suicidal histories among adults experiencing psychological trauma. METHOD: Adults seeking treatment for psychological trauma (N = 113) completed self-report questionnaires measuring childhood trauma history, self-concept, relational functioning, emotion regulation, living arrangements, employment status, marital status, and suicidal history. Independent samples t-tests were used to determine variables on which those with and without suicidal histories differed significantly. These variables were then entered into

Determinants of psychological resistance and recovery among women exposed to assaultive trauma.

INTRODUCTION: Women exposed to potentially traumatic events (PTEs) are at high risk for developing psychiatric disorders, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), general anxiety disorder (GAD), major depressive disorder (MDD), and substance-related disorders. However, this risk is not universal. Most women are resistant (i.e., remain asymptomatic), or recover following a brief symptomatic period. This study examined the psychological factors associated with resistant and recovered outcomes in a sample of high-risk women exposed to assault-related PTEs. METHOD: One hundred and fifty-ni

Complex Mental Health Sequelae of Psychological Trauma Among Women in Prenatal Care.

Pregnancy is a critical time to identify and address maternal mental health problems, for the health of both mother and child. Pregnant women with histories of exposure to interpersonal psychological trauma may experience a range of mental health problems including but not limited to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In a community sample of 1,581 pregnant women, 25% reported symptoms consistent with at least one of six syndromes, including PTSD, major depressive disorder (MDD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), or clinically significant dissociation, somatization, or affect dysregulatio

Psychological distress in young adults exposed to war-related trauma in childhood.

We tested a conceptual model of the effect of war-trauma exposure in childhood on psychological distress in young adulthood. Participants included 151 urban Kuwaiti children (51% female; M age = 10.62 years) exposed to the 1990-1991 Gulf crisis (assessed in 1993); participants also included 140 parents (81% female; M age mothers = 36.50 years; M age fathers = 41 years). In 2003, 120 participants were reassessed as young adults (50% female; M age = 21.19 years). The conceptual model was evaluated with structural equations. War-trauma exposure was associated with psychological distress in childr

Intergenerational effects of war trauma among Palestinian families mediated via psychological maltreatment.

We tested the hypothesis that intergenerational effects of parents' war trauma on offspring's attachment and mental health are mediated by psychological maltreatment. Two hundred and forty children and their parents were sampled from a war-prone area, Gaza, Palestine. The parents reported the number and type of traumatic experiences of war they had had during their lifetime before the child's birth and during a current war when the child was 10-12 years old. The children reported their war traumas, experiences of psychological maltreatment, attachment security, and symptoms of posttraumatic st

[Do childhood psychological trauma result in neurobiological changes in the adult brain?].

Since 1995 it is known that aversive and traumatic experiences in childhood, adolescence or adulthood correlate with measurable changes in the brain. Particularly, hippocampus-atrophies as well as reduction in amygdalae volumes have been investigated and documented. Furthermore, experiences of extreme form of early neglect have been associated with general reduction of brain volumes. Recent research documents neural correlates of dissociation.

Childhood trauma and current psychological functioning in adults with social anxiety disorder.

Etiological models of social anxiety disorder (SAD) suggest that early childhood trauma contributes to the development of this disorder. However, surprisingly little is known about the link between different forms of childhood trauma and adult clinical symptoms in SAD. This study (1) compared levels of childhood trauma in adults with generalized SAD versus healthy controls (HCs), and (2) examined the relationship between specific types of childhood trauma and adult clinical symptoms in SAD. Participants were 102 individuals with generalized SAD and 30 HCs who completed measures of childhood tr

Fracture repair: successful advances, persistent problems, and the psychological burden of trauma.

This article is intended to deliver three messages. First, minimally invasive methods of fracture repair are successful; when coupled with advances in implant design, these techniques yield higher union rates with fewer complications than prior methods of direct open fracture repair. Fracture repair has shifted away from direct, anatomic reconstruction of osseous surfaces and now emphasizes restoration of length, rotation, and alignment, with preservation of local soft tissues. The use of percutaneous plating and nailing techniques has expanded to many regions of fracture care. Although minima
