Visual Responsivity in Autism: Measuring Visual Responses in Autistic and Non-Autistic Adults Using Psychophysics, fMRI, and EEG.

Autistic individuals frequently report heightened sensitivity to visual stimuli, often described as discomfort in environments with bright or flickering lights. These experiences are hypothesized to reflect underlying differences in sensory gain or neural hyperexcitability; however, findings across studies have yielded mixed results, likely due to methodological variability. This study aimed to evaluate whether group differences in contrast-dependent neural and behavioral responses to a visual stimulus would be observed across complementary methods: psychophysics, fMRI, and EEG. Thirty-one aut

The role of statistical image features in material perception: psychophysics and EEG decoding with natural and synthesized images.

The present study investigated the extent to which human perception of surface materials and their physical properties depend on low-level and high-level image statistics. Using 200 images of real-world surfaces from 10 material categories, along with their corresponding Portilla-Simoncelli synthesized images preserving low-level statistics and style-synthesized images preserving feature statistics in CNN, we examined whether material categorization performance, ratings of surface properties, and material decoding accuracy from visual evoked potentials (VEPs) differed between the synthesized a

Partial Arm Weight Support Does Not Hamper the Weight Perception of Haptically-Rendered Virtual Objects: A Psychophysics Study.

Arm weight support (AWS) from upper-limb exoskeletons aids training by reducing fatigue and increasing the movement workspace, especially in people with acquired brain injury (ABI). Simultaneously, task-specific training could be enabled via haptic rendering, simulating the interaction forces with tangible virtual objects. However, how AWS affects somatosensory perception, such as the perception of the weight of haptically rendered virtual objects, is unclear. We therefore conducted a psychophysics experiment with 40 participants investigating the effect of partial AWS on virtual object weight

Acute physiological and psychophysical responses to different modes of heat stress.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? What are the profiles of acute physiological and psychophysical strain during and in recovery from different modes of heating, and to what extent do these diminish after repeated exposure? What is the main finding and its importance? Mode of heating affects the strain profiles during heat stress and recovery. Exercise in the heat incurred the greatest cardiovascular strain during heating and recovery. Humid heat was poorly tolerated despite heat strain being no greater than in other heating modes, and tolerance did not improve with mult

Psychophysical chemosensory dysfunction in eating disorders: a qualitative systematic review.

PURPOSE: Patients with chemosensory dysfunction experience significant quality of life disruptions, including reduced enjoyment of eating. While chemosensory dysfunction has been associated with eating disorders, the relationship is poorly understood. This systematic review aims to characterize psychophysical gustation and olfaction in patients with eating disorders. METHODS: Systematic review of investigations assessing psychophysical chemosensory function in patients with organic eating disorders. RESULTS: 26 studies were included. Five studies assessed both chemosenses, while 12 and 9 ass

Electrophysiological and Psychophysical Studies of Meridional Anisotropies in Children With and Without Astigmatism.

PURPOSE: We investigated the pattern of meridional anisotropies, if any, for pattern onset-offset visual evoked potential (POVEPs) responses and psychophysical grating acuity (GA) in children with normal letter visual acuity (20/20 or better). METHODS: A total of 29 children (aged 3-9 years), nine of whom were astigmatic (AS), were recruited. Orientation-specific monocular POVEPs were recorded in response to sinewave grating stimuli oriented along the subjects' principal AS meridians. Horizontal and vertical gratings were designated Meridians 1 and 2, respectively, for nonastigmatic patients

Enabling global processing in simultanagnosia by psychophysical biasing of visual pathways.

A fundamental aspect of visual cognition is our disposition to see the 'forest before the trees'. However, damage to the posterior parietal cortex, a critical brain region along the dorsal visual pathway, can produce a neurological disorder called simultanagnosia, characterized by a debilitating inability to perceive the 'forest' but not the 'trees' (i.e. impaired global processing despite intact local processing). This impairment in perceiving the global shape persists even though the ventral visual pathway, the primary recognition pathway, is intact in these patients. Here, we enabled global

Evaluating the effects of olivocochlear feedback on psychophysical measures of frequency selectivity.

Frequency selectivity was evaluated under two conditions designed to assess the influence of a "precursor" stimulus on auditory filter bandwidths. The standard condition consisted of a short masker, immediately followed by a short signal. The precursor condition was identical except a 100-ms sinusoid at the signal frequency (i.e., the precursor) was presented before the masker. The standard and precursor conditions were compared for measurements of psychophysical tuning curves (PTCs), and notched noise tuning characteristics. Estimates of frequency selectivity were significantly broader in the

Impact of rhinoplasty on objective measurement and psychophysical appreciation of facial symmetry.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the impact of rhinoplasty on the objective measurement and subjective appreciation of facial symmetry and to investigate whether perceptual shifts are correlated with objective changes in facial proportions. DESIGN: Frontal view photographs were used to measure bilateral symmetry ratios of the medial and lateral canthi, tragus, ala, and oral commissure in 100 patients before and 6 months after rhinoplasty. Gestalt dichotomous impressions of facial symmetry were also obtained in all cases. Paired t tests and chi(2) tests were used to compare facial proportions and the

A psychophysical and electrophysiological analysis of salt taste in Trpv1 null mice.

Current evidence suggests salt taste transduction involves at least two mechanisms, one that is amiloride sensitive and appears to use apically located epithelial sodium channels relatively selective for Na(+) and a second that is amiloride insensitive and uses a variant of the transient receptor potential vanilloid receptor 1 (TRPV1) that serves as a nonspecific cation channel. To provide a functional context for these findings, we trained Trpv1 knockout (KO) and wild-type (WT) C57BL/6J mice (n = 9 or 10/group) in a two-response operant discrimination procedure and measured detection threshol

EEG detection of early Alzheimer's disease using psychophysical tasks.

In this study, we hypothesized that a quantitative EEG (qEEG) method for measuring EEG variability combined with specific psychophysical tasks could improve the classification accuracy of subjects with normal aging vs. mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or mild dementia due to Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders (ADRD). The cross-sectional sample consisted of 48 subjects (32 normal aging and 16 ADRD: n = 3 mild dementia, n = 13 MCI FAST stage 3). During EEG recording, subjects performed two visual, delayed recognition memory tasks as well as a task that tested their ability to perceive stru

The tale is in the tail: an alternative hypothesis for psychophysical performance variability in dyslexia.

Dyslexic groups have been reported to display poorer mean performance than groups of normal readers on a variety of psychophysical tasks. However, inspection of the distribution of individual scores for each group typically reveals that the majority of dyslexic observers actually perform within the normal range. Differences between group means often reflect the influence of a small number of dyslexic individuals who perform very poorly. While such findings are typically interpreted as evidence for specific perceptual deficiencies in dyslexia, caution in this approach is necessary. In this stud

Psychophysical and pupillometric study of spatial channels of visual processing in blindsight.

To date no systematic method has been used for characterising the residual capacity of blindsight subjects that would allow comparison and generalisation across all subjects. The detection of isoluminant gratings of varying spatial and temporal frequencies commends itself for detailed between-subject comparison, and for mapping results onto physiological properties in relation to neuronal circuitry. We report the ability of a blindsight subject (CS) to detect suprathreshold sine-wave gratings over a range of spatial and temporal frequencies using psychophysical techniques. A band-pass spatial

The role of somatosensory feedback in dystonia: a psychophysical [correction of psycophysical] evaluation.

Ten patients with idiopathic dystonia and twelve healthy controls were tested with pairs of non-noxious electrical stimuli separated by different time intervals. Stimuli were delivered (i) to the pad of the index finger (same-point condition), (ii) to the pad and to the base of the index finger (same-finger condition) and (iii) to the pad of the index and ring fingers (different-fingers condition). Subjects were asked to report if they perceived single or double stimuli in the first condition and synchronous or asynchronous stimuli in the second and third conditions. STDTs were significantly h

Psychophysical characterisation of early functional loss in glaucoma and ocular hypertension.

AIM: The psychophysical evaluation of selective cell loss in early glaucoma and ocular hypertension. METHODS: Contrast sensitivity was measured for the detection of luminance modulated gratings at a range of spatial (0.5, 2, 8 c/deg) and temporal (0, 16 Hz) frequency combinations in three groups of age matched patients (primary open angle glaucoma, ocular hypertension, normal controls; n=16). Stimuli of 5 degrees were presented foveally and at 15 degrees along the nasal horizontal meridian under photopic conditions. RESULTS: Fovea: Compared to the normal group, the thresholds for the glaucom

Tactile perception in developmental dyslexia: a psychophysical study using gratings.

Multiple sensory abnormalities have been reported in individuals with developmental dyslexia, especially in the visual and auditory systems. We used gratings of alternating ridges and grooves to investigate tactile perception in this disorder using two tasks: spatial acuity-dependent discrimination of grating orientation and discrimination of gratings varying in ridge width. Compared to age-matched normal subjects, dyslexics were significantly impaired on grating orientation discrimination, with mean thresholds that were nearly twice normal. Unlike normal subjects, their performance on this ta

Intracochlear factors contributing to psychophysical percepts following cochlear implantation.

The performance of cochlear implant patients may be related to intracochlear, histopathological factors. We have performed detailed post-mortem examinations of five human, implanted cochleas and for each electrode correlated the psychophysical threshold, comfortable level and dynamic range with spiral ganglion cell survival, presence of fibrous tissue and/or new bone, and distance between the centers of the electrode bands and Rosenthal's canal. The psychophysical parameters were strongly interrelated. Threshold and comfort levels correlated with the distance between the electrodes and Rosenth

Responses to chromatic and luminance contrast in glaucoma: a psychophysical and electrophysiological study.

Increasing anatomical evidence indicates that large retinal ganglion cells (M-cells) are preferentially damaged in primary open angle glaucoma (OAG), while the smaller ganglion cells (P-cells) are relatively spared. In 13 patients with defined OAG and modest visual field defects, we evaluated the responses to stimuli that are expected to involve primarily the function of the P-pathway and compared them with those of control subjects. The psychophysical contrast sensitivity (CS), the PERG and the VEPs were measured for red-green gratings of pure chromatic contrast, as well as yellow-black grati
