The 1965 "Gloria Films," Then and Now.

Everett Shostrom's 1965 Three Approaches to Psychotherapy films were created and used as demonstrations of how to do psychotherapy. After a brief account of how they came about, precises of the three films are presented to highlight major differences among them. These are followed by descriptions of post-filming reactions and interactions of the participants-Gloria Szymanski, Carl Rogers, Fritz Perls, and Albert Ellis. Consideration then is given to the possible impact of the "Gloria Films" on Americans' acceptance of psychotherapy as a pathway to self-improvement that competed with more longs

Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy for Complex, Chronic, and Treatment-Resistant Conditions.

Over the past 50 years, intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy (ISTDP) has been developed, implemented, and evaluated with respect to the treatment of a broad spectrum of complex, chronic, and treatment-resistant conditions. This therapy was developed specifically to treat a range of patients, including those who are highly defensive, those who experience the repression of emotions, and those who have cognitive-perceptual disruptions along with primitive defenses. These three groups of patients are characterized by patterns of attachment trauma and deficits related to neglect. Among the ma

Measurement of transference interpretations.

The authors present a cost-efficient process rating scale for detailed measurement of how much transference interpretations and related therapist interventions are used in brief dynamic psychotherapy. Theoretical and methodological considerations on how to operationalize and quantify such therapeutic interventions are discussed. The scale had highly satisfactory interrater reliability for three raters, who rated 60 whole sessions from an ongoing randomized study of two manualized forms of brief dynamic psychotherapy. In one treatment group, moderate emphasis on transference analysis was intend

Single-session behavioral activation for alcohol use disorder: a randomized controlled pilot trial.

Brief psychotherapy interventions for alcohol use disorder (AUD) focus on increasing motivation to reduce alcohol-use, rather than strategies for changing alcohol-use behaviors. Behavioral activation, an action-oriented, client-centered psychotherapy addresses this gap though reinforcement of value-based, substance-free activities. We examined preliminary efficacy of a single-session behavioral activation intervention ("ultrabrief behavioral activation", UBA) for people with mild-moderate AUD. UBA was studied in a randomized controlled parallel-group pilot trial with an assessment-only control

Do therapist experience, diagnosis and functional level predict outcome in short term psychotherapy?

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of clinical diagnosis, functional level and therapist experience on the outcome of brief psychotherapy. Patients (N = 123) were clinically diagnosed and assigned to either a psychiatrist, psychiatry resident, family practice resident or medical student. Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) scores and the Global Severity Index (GSI) of the SCL-90 were rated at baseline, at the end of therapy and at six month follow-up. The Client Satisfaction Questionnaire was also scored after therapy. All groups of patients improved significantly. Nei

Parent- and child-reported executive functioning and response to psychotherapy in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder: Results from the TECTO study.

UNLABELLED: Executive function (EF) difficulties in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are suggested to interact with psychotherapy response. We investigated the role of parent- and self-rated EF in a randomized trial comparing cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and psychoeducation with relaxation training (PRT). We investigated the extent to which: (1) EF difficulties are evident in non-medicated pediatric OCD patients; (2) difficulties improve during psychotherapy; and (3) EF moderates symptom alleviation. We included 114 patients with OCD (aged 8–17 years), who received 14 sessio

Alliance patterns over the course of short-term dynamic psychotherapy: the shape of productive relationships.

The shape of alliance processes over the course of psychotherapy has already been studied in several process-outcome studies on very brief psychotherapy. The present study applies the shape-of-change methodology to short-term dynamic psychotherapies and complements this method with hierarchical linear modeling. A total of 50 psychotherapies of up to 40 sessions were included. Alliance was measured at the end of each session. The results indicate that a linear progression model is most adequate. Three main patterns were found: stable, linear, and quadratic growth. The linear growth pattern, alo

PTSD in Elder Abuse Survivors: Trauma Symptom Presentation and Treatment Outcomes With the PROTECT Intervention.

OBJECTIVES: High rates of depression and suicidal ideation among elder abuse (EA) victims have been documented, but few studies have examined post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in this population. This study assessed PTSD symptom rates and presentation among EA victims with depression and evaluated PTSD symptom trajectories throughout PROTECT, a brief behavioral intervention. DESIGN: Depressed (PHQ-9 ≥ 10) EA victims with no cognitive impairment (Mini MoCA ≥ 11) were referred by partner agencies and consented by research staff. Eligible participants received nine weeks of PROTECT

Efficacy of combined cognitive-behavior therapy and hypnotherapy in anorexia nervosa: a case study.

A 22-year-old female diagnosed with anorexia nervosa received brief psychotherapy within a span of 1.5 months. Detailed cognitive-behavioral assessment was done and eating attitude was rated. Intervention of eating behavior and cognitive restructuring were initiated along with regular practice of self-hypnosis with ego-strengthening suggestions. Age regression was done to identify conflicts. Significant improvement in eating attitude was noted after 8 sessions without relapse at 3 months. Details of the psychotherapy are discussed.

Vaginismus.

Eighty patients with vaginismus were seen in the Human Sexuality Clinic, McMaster University Medical Center, between 1972 and 1976. The diagnosis was made based on history and physical demonstration of perineal muscular spasm. The patients were classified according to the presenting complaint as well as to the degree of muscle spasm experienced at the time of physical examination. In the management of these patients, relaxation, self and mutual pleasuring exercises, Kegel exercises, and physical examination played an important role in successful treatment. Certain male problems were identified

The effectiveness of four empirically supported psychotherapies for primary care depression and anxiety: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Depressive and anxiety disorders are highly prevalent and detrimental in primary care settings. However, there are gaps in the literature concerning effectiveness and generalizability of empirically supported interventions and treatment of both depression and anxiety in primary care settings. The aim of this review is to systematically assess and meta-analyze the effectiveness of brief empirically-supported psychotherapies for treating depression and/or anxiety in primary care. METHODS: Seven electronic databases, five professional websites and manual search of reference lists wer

The role of cognitive biases in short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy.

UNLABELLED: The concept of biased thinking - or cognitive biases - is relevant to psychotherapy research and clinical conceptualization, beyond cognitive theories. The present naturalistic study aimed to examine the changes in biased thinking over the course of a short-term dynamic psychotherapy (STDP) and to discover potential links between these changes and symptomatic improvement. This study focuses on 32 self-referred patients consulting for Adjustment Disorder according to DSM-IV-TR. The therapists were experienced psychodynamically oriented psychiatrists and psychotherapists. Coding of c

Open trial of psychodynamic psychotherapy for panic disorder: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: This report contains preliminary data from an open trial of brief psychodynamic psychotherapy for panic disorder. METHOD: Fourteen patients with primary DSM-IV panic disorder completed a 24-session, twice-weekly course of psychodynamic psychotherapy. Other psychiatric treatment was not permitted throughout the 12-week treatment period and the 6-month follow-up. Symptoms were assessed at baseline, treatment termination, and 6-month posttermination follow-up (40 weeks). RESULTS: Statistically significant, clinically meaningful improvements appeared in panic, depression, anxiety, and

A relational approach to group therapy for women with bulimia nervosa: moving from understanding to action.

This article explains how the psychology of women can inform group treatment by translating relational theory (RT) into practice within a short-term outpatient bulimia group. First, the article provides a brief overview of a relational understanding of women's psychological development, the etiology and maintenance of bulimia nervosa, and group psychotherapy. Then, clinical vignettes illustrate the application of RT in practice through discussion of four main healing factors at work in the different stages of the group. Through promoting validation, self-empathy, mutuality, and empowerment, th

Efficacy of a brief psychological intervention for adolescents with recent suicide attempt: A randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents are at a heightened risk of suicide reattempts following hospital discharge, but few evidence-based interventions exist. This study evaluated the efficacy of the self-awareness of mental health (SAM) program combined with treatment as usual (TAU) versus TAU alone in reducing reattempts among high-risk adolescents. METHODS: A randomized clinical trial was conducted across nine Spanish hospitals (January 2021-March 2024) with 261 adolescents (12-17 years) who had attempted suicide within the last 15 days. Participants were assigned to SAM + TAU (n=128) or TAU (n=133), wi

Well-Being Therapy for Fibromyalgia: A Case Report.

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is characterized by chronic widespread pain, fatigue, anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbances, significantly impairing quality of life and psychological well-being. Well-being therapy (WBT) is a brief psychotherapeutic intervention aimed at increasing well-being and optimizing functioning, which has proven effective in treating various conditions involving pain and psychological or psychiatric symptoms. We describe a case study of a 22-year-old university student experiencing FMS, highlighting the far-reaching effects of the condition on her quality of life. Aft

Short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy: review of recent process and outcome studies.

Short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy (STPP) is a widely practised form of psychological intervention. Given that the Roth and Fonagy (1996) review concluded that there was a lack of confirming evidence for STPP, the current review is focused on studies published between 1996 and 2006 that evaluate the efficacy of STPP. As a result of a systematic literature review, 18 studies were found that met inclusion criteria consistent with those used by Roth and Fonagy (1996) for selection of studies, patient groupings and definition of therapeutic method. In general these studies add to an increasing
