Deaf and Hard of Hearing Clients in Mixed-Ability Psychotherapy Groups: Therapist Perspectives and Practical Insights.

Deaf and hard of hearing (D/HOH) individuals experience higher rates of mental health disorders and face significant barriers when accessing services, particularly in group therapy settings. This study investigates group therapists' perspectives on incorporating D/HOH clients into mixed-ability therapy groups predominantly composed of hearing individuals. Using a mixed-methods design, this study compares the experiences of therapists who have facilitated such groups with the perceptions of those who have not. Qualitative results highlight perceived barriers for therapists without experience wo

The Effect of Cognitive Fusion on Change in PTSD and Depression Symptom Severity in Veterans Engaged in Group Psychotherapy.

Cognitive fusion occurs when people experience their thoughts as literally true and allow them to dictate behavior. Fusion has been shown to be associated with increased symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression; however, the association between change in cognitive fusion, PTSD, and depression symptoms has been relatively uninvestigated. Our study aims to examine the associations between PTSD, depression symptoms, and cognitive fusion in Canadian veterans from pre- to post-treatment. Clients (N = 287) completed measures of PTSD symptom severity, depression symptom severi

Number of group psychotherapy sessions predicts inflammation changes in patients with coronary artery disease and comorbid depression.

OBJECTIVE: Inflammation contributes to the bidirectional relationship between depression and coronary artery disease (CAD). However, the impact of group psychotherapy on inflammatory levels in CAD patients with comorbid depression has not been elucidated. METHODS: A total of 337 patients (average age 59.2 years ±9.4, 80.4% male) from the SPIRR-CAD trial provided results of questionnaires and inflammatory data at baseline (T0) and the 18-month follow-up (T3) of a group psychotherapy program, with a maximum of 25 sessions vs. usual care. RESULTS: At baseline, inflammatory parameters were eleva

Verbal affective expression during group and individual psychotherapy. Towards a description of therapist- and setting-related variables.

The paper deals with a comparison between verbal affective interventions by the same psychoanalyst in different therapeutic settings, individual and group therapy. Since the same therapist is involved, an exploration of interactional aspects of his therapeutic style becomes possible, taking into consideration his theoretical allegiance and his hypotheses about the structure and development of the psychotherapeutic milieu. The conformation of therapist-group and therapist-individual dyads shows a high thematic concordance across both settings, particularly with regard to separation anxiety, but

Implementation of an Evidence-Based Safety Aid Reduction Group Psychotherapy Treatment in Military Health System Mental Health Clinics.

INTRODUCTION: Safety Aid Reduction Treatment for Anxiety and Related Disorders (START) is a transdiagnostic group therapy found to reduce self-reported anxiety symptoms among veterans. The Practice Based Implementation (PBI) Network, a program designed to assess small-scale implementation pilots of mental health therapies and trainings, partnered with START experts and military mental health (MH) clinics to implement START. Evaluation of perceptions of facilitators and barriers in these trials is important before considering wider Military Health System (MHS) adoption. MATERIALS AND METHODS:

G-FORCE: the effectiveness of group psychotherapy for Cluster-C personality disorders: protocol of a pragmatic RCT comparing psychodynamic and two forms of schema group therapy.

BACKGROUND: Cluster-C personality disorders (PDs), characterized by a high level of fear and anxiety, are related to high levels of distress, societal dysfunctioning and chronicity of various mental health disorders. Evidence for the optimal treatment is extremely scarce. Nevertheless, the need to treat these patients is eminent. In clinical practice, group therapy is one of the frequently offered approaches, with two important frameworks: schema therapy and psychodynamic therapy. These two frameworks suggest different mechanisms of change, but until now, this has not yet been explored. The pu

Listening and being heard during group psychotherapy: A response surface analysis of (in)congruence in communication on cohesion and interest in continued group services after the initial session.

Conversational give-and-take after members engage in self-disclosure during group psychotherapy-a form of mutual influence implicated in group cohesion and continuation of treatment-can be conceptualized dyadically as the degree to which members engage in active, empathic listening and perceive others to do the same (i.e., responsiveness). Examining the effects of group members' perception of balance between their own level of listening and other members' responding (i.e., congruence) as it relates to group process and outcome can provide insights and identify opportunities for intervention fr

An Action-Based Psychosocial Group Intervention in Psychiatric Inpatient Care: A Pragmatic Add-On Study to Talk-Based Psychotherapy.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Psychiatric inpatient care emphasizes pharmacological stabilization, yet psychosocial interventions remain essential for addressing complex emotional, interpersonal, and behavioral needs. While talk-based psychotherapy (TBP) is standard inpatient psychosocial care, some patients face barriers to exclusively verbal engagement during acute crises. This study examined the feasibility and implementation of psychodrama as a pragmatic add-on to routine inpatient TBP under real-world ward conditions. METHODS: A quasi-experimental pragmatic add-on design was used (N = 84). All

Integrative group psychotherapy reduces daily cortisol output and hair cortisol: A randomized active‑controlled trial with multi‑day profiling.

BACKGROUND: Chronic psychosocial stress can disrupt hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and sympathetic nervous system function, yet randomized trials rarely combine multi-day diurnal salivary profiling with hair glucocorticoid assessment. METHODS: We conducted a parallel-group, superiority randomized controlled trial with 1:1 allocation to compare an 8-week integrative group program with a dose-matched active control. The intervention combined social-affective skills training, slow breathing with heart-rate-variability biofeedback, and cognitive reappraisal. The primary outcome was the

Psychotherapy groups and individual support to enhance mental health and early dyadic interaction among drug-abusing mothers.

The purpose of this controlled study was to examine the outcome of psychodynamic mother-infant group psychotherapy (PGT) outpatient intervention for drug-abusing perinatal mother-infant dyads. PGT comprised 20 to 24 weekly 3-hr sessions with 3 to 5 months of follow-up. A comparison intervention group was formed of mothers participating in individually tailored psychosocial support (PSS) lasting, on average, 12 months and providing mother-infant support and practical counseling. We hypothesized that positive changes would occur in maternal drug abuse, mental health, and mother-infant interactio
