The dose-dependent effects of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation for pain relief in individuals with fibromyalgia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a nonpharmacological modality widely used to manage pain; however, its effectiveness for individuals with fibromyalgia (FM) has been questioned. In previous studies and systematic reviews, variables related to dose of TENS application have not been considered. The objectives of this meta-analysis were (1) to determine the effect of TENS on pain in individuals with FM and (2) determine the dose-dependent effect of TENS dose parameters on pain relief in individuals with FM. We searched the PubMed, PEDro, Cochrane, and EMBASE databases for rel

Predicting the number of citations of polycystic kidney disease with 100 top-cited articles since 2010: Bibliometric analysis.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a genetic disorder in which the renal tubules become structurally abnormal, resulting in the development and growth of multiple cysts within the kidneys. Numerous studies on PKD have been published in the literature. However, no such articles used medical subject headings (MeSH terms) to predict the number of article citations. This study aimed to predict the number of article citations using 100 top-cited PKD articles (T100PKDs) and dissect the characteristics of influential authors and affiliated counties since 2010. METHODS: We searched the Pu

Pedunculopontine nucleus deep brain stimulation in Parkinson's disease: A clinical review.

Pedunculopontine nucleus region deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a promising but experimental therapy for axial motor deficits in Parkinson's disease (PD), particularly gait freezing and falls. Here, we summarise the clinical application and outcomes reported during the past 10 years. The published dataset is limited, comprising fewer than 100 cases. Furthermore, there is great variability in clinical methodology between and within surgical centers. The most common indication has been severe medication refractory gait freezing (often associated with postural instability). Some patients received

The inconsistent definitions used for tuberculosis in the medical literature.

In order to assess the confusion attendant with current definitions of extrapulmonary tuberculosis, pleural and miliary disease, a set of 37 papers published which analyzed disease states were assessed for how the terms adhered to official definitions of the American Thoracic Society, the World Health Organization, and the Centers for Disease Control. The findings showed uncertainties in the classification of extrapulmonary disease, a frequent inconsistency in the inclusion of pleural disease within pulmonary rather than extrapulmonary disease, and the ambivalent use of the terms pleural and d

Perioperative variables contributing to the rupture of intracranial aneurysm: an update.

BACKGROUND: Perioperative aneurysm rupture (PAR) is one of the most dreaded complications of intracranial aneurysms, and approximately 80% of nontraumatic SAHs are related to such PAR aneurysms. The literature is currently scant and even controversial regarding the issues of various contributory factors on different phases of perioperative period. Thus this paper highlights the current understanding of various risk factors, variables, and outcomes in relation to PAR and try to summarize the current knowledge. METHOD: We have performed a PubMed search (1 January 1991-31 December 2012) using se

Copper and prion diseases.

Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies are diseases of animals and humans that are also termed prion diseases. These diseases are linked together because a normal brain glycoprotein termed the prion protein is converted to a readily detectable protease-resistant isoform. There is now strong evidence to suggest that apart from this difference in resistance a major difference between the isoforms is that the normal prion protein binds copper and has an anti-oxidant function. Brains from Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease patients and brains from mice with experimental mouse scrapie have been shown to

Tardive Dyskinesia Associated with Atypical Antipsychotics: Prevalence, Mechanisms and Management Strategies.

All antipsychotics, including the atypical antipsychotics (AAPs), may cause tardive dyskinesia (TD), a potentially irreversible movement disorder, the pathophysiology of which is currently unknown. The prevention and treatment of TD remain major challenges for clinicians. We conducted a PubMed search to review the prevalence and etiology of and management strategies for TD associated with AAPs. TD prevalence rates varied substantially between studies, with an estimated prevalence of around 20% in patients using AAPs. The risk of TD is lower with AAPs than with typical antipsychotics (TAPs) but

Advances in urinary protein biomarkers for urogenital and non-urogenital pathologies.

The discovery of protein biomarkers that reflect the biological state of the body is of vital importance to disease management. Urine is an ideal source of biomarkers that provides a non-invasive approach to diagnosis, prognosis and prediction of diseases. Consequently, the study of the human urinary proteome has increased dramatically over the last 10 years, with many studies being published. This review focuses on urinary protein biomarkers that have shown potential, in initial studies, for diseases affecting the urogenital tract, specifically chronic kidney disease and prostate cancer, as w

Revisiting the relationship between essential tremor and Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between essential tremor and Parkinson's disease has been a subject of reviews and debates for long time, but there is now growing evidence that the two common movement disorders are pathogenically related, at least in some patient populations. METHODS: PubMed as well as authors' own files were searched for relevant keywords regarding overlap between the disorders in clinical features as well as on epidemiologic, genetic, imaging, and pathological studies. RESULTS: New findings in each of these categories are critically reviewed and placed in the context of previ

PAMPs and DAMPs in Sepsis: A Review of Their Molecular Features and Potential Clinical Implications.

Sepsis is a serious organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated immune host reaction to a pathogen. The innate immunity is programmed to react immediately to conserved molecules, released by the pathogens (PAMPs), and the host (DAMPs). We aimed to review the molecular mechanisms of the early phases of sepsis, focusing on PAMPs, DAMPs, and their related pathways, to identify potential biomarkers. We included studies published in English and searched on PubMed® and Cochrane®. After a detailed discussion on the actual knowledge of PAMPs/DAMPs, we analyzed their role in the different organs affecte

Ataxia-telangiectasia: A review of movement disorders, clinical features, and genotype correlations.

Ataxia-telangiectasia is an autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder that was initially thought to present exclusively in childhood. With the discovery of the ATM gene, the phenotypic spectrum of the condition has expanded. This review elaborates the expanded phenomenology, including oculomotor apraxia and immunodeficiency, and estimates the presence of each movement disorder feature from previously reported literature. Initial manifestations of Ataxia-telangiectasia include cerebellar symptoms (67%), dystonia (18%), choreoathetosis (10%), and tremor (4%), with parkinsonism and myoclonus

Current Status of Endoscopic Endonasal Surgery for Skull Base Meningiomas: Review of the Literature.

Endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) is expected to be ideal for the paramedian ventral skull base meningiomas, allowing wide access to the ventral skull base regions and realizing early devascularization of the tumor without retraction of the brain. We searched clinical reports of EEA for skull base meningiomas, written in English language, published before October 2014, using the PubMed literature search on the website. Skull base meningiomas are subdivided by the site of occurrence, olfactory groove (8 articles including 80 cases), tuberculum sellae (14 articles, 153 cases), cavernous sinus

Low Risk for Switch to Mania during Treatment with Sleep Promoting Antidepressants.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep-promoting antidepressants are of interest because they are used not only as antidepressants, but also to promote sleep. METHODS: We reviewed case reports describing the switch to mania during treatment with trazodone, mirtazapine, or agomelatine. RESULTS: Trazodone, mirtazapine, and agomelatine may induce manic symptoms. However, the risk of switching is related, first of all, to doses recommended for antidepressant treatment, administered without mood-stabilizer co-therapy. Low doses of these antidepressants, used for their hypnotic or sedative effects, were observed to
