IASM: A System for the Intelligent Active Surveillance of Malaria.

Malaria, a life-threatening infectious disease, spreads rapidly via parasites. Malaria prevention is more effective and efficient than treatment. However, the existing surveillance systems used to prevent malaria are inadequate, especially in areas with limited or no access to medical resources. In this paper, in order to monitor the spreading of malaria, we develop an intelligent surveillance system based on our existing algorithms. First, a visualization function and active surveillance were implemented in order to predict and categorize areas at high risk of infection. Next, socioeconomic a

The National Women's Health Study: assembly and description of a population-based reproductive cohort.

BACKGROUND: Miscarriage is a common event but is remarkably difficult to measure in epidemiological studies. Few large-scale population-based studies have been conducted in the UK. METHODS: This was a population-based two-stage postal survey of reproductive histories of adult women living in the United Kingdom in 2001, sampled from the electronic electoral roll. In Stage 1 a short "screening" questionnaire was sent to over 60,000 randomly selected women in order to identify those aged 55 and under who had ever been pregnant or ever attempted to achieve a pregnancy, from whom a brief reproduct

Safe motherhood in the United States: challenges for surveillance.

OBJECTIVES: Maternal mortality ratios in the United States are higher than those of many other industrialized nations. Moreover, these ratios have not changed in the past 20 years, and large racial disparities persist in measures of both maternal mortality and morbidity. In an affluent developed country, maternal deaths should serve as rare sentinel events, highlighting opportunities for prevention and reduction of morbidities. However, existing surveillance efforts are poorly developed, and pregnancy-related deaths and illnesses tend to be underreported. To formulate recommendations for impro

Comparing early outbreak detection algorithms based on their optimized parameter values.

BACKGROUND: Many researchers have evaluated the performance of outbreak detection algorithms with recommended parameter values. However, the influence of parameter values on algorithm performance is often ignored. METHODS: Based on reported case counts of bacillary dysentery from 2005 to 2007 in Beijing, semi-synthetic datasets containing outbreak signals were simulated to evaluate the performance of five outbreak detection algorithms. Parameters' values were optimized prior to the evaluation. RESULTS: Differences in performances were observed as parameter values changed. Of the five algorit

Stakeholder Perspectives on Health System Readiness for Integrating Artificial Intelligence into Public Health in Saudi Arabia.

Background/Objectives: Although artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to strengthen disease surveillance, predictive analytics, preventive interventions, and population-level decision-making, its successful integration requires health systems to be adequately prepared across technical, workforce, governance, and organizational dimensions. Saudi Arabia's rapid digital health transformation provides a unique national context for exploring these readiness conditions. This study explored stakeholder perceptions of conditions relevant to health system readiness for integrating AI into publ

Role of the centers for education and research on therapeutics (CERTs) in pharmacovigilance and proper use of therapeutics.

According to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Committee on the Assessment of the U.S. Drug Safety System, "The recent highly publicized controversies surrounding the safety of some drugs have contributed to a public perception that the drug safety system is in crisis. It seems fair to say that this perception has created an opportunity for a thorough evaluation of the U.S. drug safety system." The evaluation was focused on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). To improve the FDA and its function in the public health system to improve therapeutics, it is critical to understand the contrib

Syndromic surveillance using minimum transfer of identifiable data: the example of the National Bioterrorism Syndromic Surveillance Demonstration Program.

Several health plans and other organizations are collaborating with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to develop a syndromic surveillance system with national coverage that includes more than 20 million people. A principal design feature of this system is reliance on daily reporting of counts of individuals with syndromes of interest in specified geographic regions rather than reporting of individual encounter-level information. On request from public health agencies, health plans and telephone triage services provide additional information regarding individuals who are part of ap

Verbal autopsy of 48 000 adult deaths attributable to medical causes in Chennai (formerly Madras), India.

BACKGROUND: In the city of Chennai, India, registration of the fact of death is almost complete but the cause of death is often inadequately recorded on the death certificate. A special verbal autopsy (VA) study of 48 000 adult deaths in Chennai during 1995-97 was conducted to arrive at the probable underlying cause of death and to measure cause specific mortality rates for Chennai. METHODS: Trained non-medical graduates with at least 15 years of formal education interviewed the surviving family members or an associate of the deceased to write a report on the complaints, symptoms, signs, dura

A framework to integrate equity in public health emergency response dashboards: Dashboard instrument to review equity (DIRE).

OBJECTIVES: COVID-19 created an urgent element of clinical and financial strain to the public health system, forcing it into rapid response mode. Key public health decisions were quickly made, with limited data and guidance to address decision trade-offs and community inequities. Gaps identified in the pandemic confirmed the need for a new tool, like this study's Dashboard Instrument to Review Equity (DIRE) Framework, to ensure decision-makers are given quick and equitable decision-making guidance. STUDY DESIGN: Scoping review and tool development. METHODS: The scoping review was conducted t

Principles of Large-scale Evidence Generation and Evaluation across a Network of Databases (LEGEND).

Evidence derived from existing health-care data, such as administrative claims and electronic health records, can fill evidence gaps in medicine. However, many claim such data cannot be used to estimate causal treatment effects because of the potential for observational study bias; for example, due to residual confounding. Other concerns include P hacking and publication bias. In response, the Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics international collaborative launched the Large-scale Evidence Generation and Evaluation across a Network of Databases (LEGEND) research initiative. Its

Initiating informatics and GIS support for a field investigation of Bioterrorism: The New Jersey anthrax experience.

BACKGROUND: The investigation of potential exposure to anthrax spores in a Trenton, New Jersey, mail-processing facility required rapid assessment of informatics needs and adaptation of existing informatics tools to new physical and information-processing environments. Because the affected building and its computers were closed down, data to list potentially exposed persons and map building floor plans were unavailable from the primary source. RESULTS: Controlling the effects of anthrax contamination required identification and follow-up of potentially exposed persons. Risk of exposure had to

Using a community-engaged health informatics approach to develop a web analytics research platform for sharing data with community stakeholders.

Marginalized communities are rarely included in the planning of research relevant to their own health or have access to research data. We implemented a community-based participatory research approach in developing a new health informatics system, WARP (Web Analytics Research Platform), to enable stakeholders to access and analyze research data. We leveraged data from a cohort study of 751 patients in the Transitions Clinic Network (TCN), a network of clinical programs serving patients with a history of incarceration. WARP holds de-identified, patient data, streamlines data processing (i.e. tra

Advancing genomics for waterborne pathogen surveillance in Australia.

Waterborne pathogens, particularly Cryptosporidium, pose a growing public-health risk in Australia and globally. Cryptosporidiosis notifications have increased markedly in recent years across multiple countries, driven by greater recreational water exposure, human mobility and climate variability. Climate change, including rising temperatures and extreme weather events, is expected to intensify transmission. Emerging drug resistance in some parasitic pathogens underscores the need for high-resolution surveillance. Despite its status as a nationally notifiable disease, cryptosporidiosis surveil

De-black-boxing health AI: demonstrating reproducible machine learning computable phenotypes using the N3C-RECOVER Long COVID model in the All of Us data repository.

Machine learning (ML)-driven computable phenotypes are among the most challenging to share and reproduce. Despite this difficulty, the urgent public health considerations around Long COVID make it especially important to ensure the rigor and reproducibility of Long COVID phenotyping algorithms such that they can be made available to a broad audience of researchers. As part of the NIH Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery (RECOVER) Initiative, researchers with the National COVID Cohort Collaborative (N3C) devised and trained an ML-based phenotype to identify patients highly probable to have Lon
