A systematic review of water, sanitation, and hygiene practices in developing countries: exploring the effects on public health.

BACKGROUND: Lack of proper access to safe Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) is a pervasive cause of preventable disease and mortality in developing countries, disproportionately impacting the most vulnerable portions of the population. Despite activity globally, much still needs to be accomplished regarding expansion of WASH coverage, and the issue still remains a defining public health challenge. This systematic review synthesizes available evidence to assess the current status of WASH practices, associated health outcomes, and the barriers to effective safe WASH behaviors in developing c

The vaccine-autism connection: a public health crisis caused by unethical medical practices and fraudulent science.

In 1998, Dr. Andrew Wakefield, a British gastroenterologist, described a new autism phenotype called the regressive autism-enterocolitis syndrome triggered by environmental factors such as measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccination. The speculative vaccination-autism connection decreased parental confidence in public health vaccination programs and created a public health crisis in England and questions about vaccine safety in North America. After 10 years of controversy and investigation, Dr. Wakefield was found guilty of ethical, medical, and scientific misconduct in the publication of th

Academic-practice partnerships in public health workforce development in China: a comparative analysis of 12 purposively selected cases.

BACKGROUND: Academic-practice partnerships (APPs) are increasingly used in public health workforce development, but evidence on their institutional drivers and varied development pathways in China remains limited. This study examines how institutional pressures, interorganizational resource relationships, and boundary-spanning practices are reflected in the development of APPs in China. METHODS: An exploratory multiple-case comparative design was adopted. Twelve APP cases were purposively selected across Chinese regions with diverse resource endowments. Drawing on institutional isomorphism, R

WHO public health laboratories webinar series - an online platform to disseminate testing recommendations and best practices during health emergencies.

Laboratories play a central role in managing public health emergencies. The COVID-19 pandemic imposed unique challenges on global laboratory systems, including testing protocol uncertainties, supply shortages, rapid need for information dissemination, and disruptions to traditional training methods. In response, the WHO established the Public Health Laboratories (PHL) knowledge sharing webinar series whose goals were to respond to the increased demand in up-to-date and reliable information, which WHO is in a unique position to provide. It also aimed to enhance peer-to-peer exchanges across lab

Exposure to a Vitamin D Best Practices Toolkit, Model, and E-Tools Increases Knowledge, Confidence, and the Translation of Research to Public Health and Practice.

Preventable vitamin D deficiency (VDD) is a global health concern. The prevention, early detection, and treatment of vitamin D deficiency aligning with serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration recommendations of 40-60 ng/mL (100-150 nmol/L), provided by an international panel of 48 vitamin D researchers, would result in significant health benefits and cost savings to individuals and society. However, research shows that healthcare professionals lack knowledge and confidence in best practices with respect to vitamin D. A vitamin D toolkit was developed that included a model for decision-making s

Age-Based Genomic Screening during Childhood: Ethical and Practical Considerations in Public Health Genomics Implementation.

Genomic sequencing offers an unprecedented opportunity to detect inherited variants that are implicated in rare Mendelian disorders, yet there are many challenges to overcome before this technology can routinely be applied in the healthy population. The age-based genomic screening (ABGS) approach is a novel alternative to genome-scale sequencing at birth that aims to provide highly actionable genetic information to parents over the course of their child's routine health care. ABGS utilizes an established metric to identify conditions with high clinical actionability and incorporates informatio

Diabetic retinopathy: global prevalence, major risk factors, screening practices and public health challenges: a review.

Diabetes retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of vision loss in middle-aged and elderly people globally. Early detection and prompt treatment allow prevention of diabetes-related visual impairment. Patients with diabetes require regular follow-up with primary care physicians to optimize their glycaemic, blood pressure and lipid control to prevent development and progression of DR and other diabetes-related complications. Other risk factors of DR include higher body mass index, puberty and pregnancy, and cataract surgery. There are weaker associations with some genetic and inflammatory markers.

Perceptions and Practices of Mass Bat Exposure Events in the Setting of Rabies Among U.S. Public Health Agencies.

Current guidelines in the setting of exposures to potentially rabid bats established by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) address post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) administration in situations where a person may not be aware that a bite or direct contact has occurred and the bat is not available for diagnostic testing. These include instances when a bat is discovered in a room where a person awakens from sleep, is a child without an adult witness, has a mental disability or is intoxicated. The current ACIP guidelines, however, do not address PEP in the setting of multiple p
