Bibliometric Analysis of the 50 Most Cited Publications in Hidradenitis Suppurativa.

BACKGROUND: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) has historically been a neglected disease. However, research in this field has grown exponentially in the past decade. METHODS: The top-cited HS articles from 1950 to 2020 were analyzed for authorship, study topic, study design, and senior author country of origin. RESULTS: We found that nearly half of the top 50 cited articles were published in the last decade, with a recent increase in the number of highly cited randomized controlled trials. Medical treatment is the most cited topic, with more attention on biologics over time. The past decade has s

Temporal and geographic trends in celiac disease publications: a bibliometric analysis.

BACKGROUND: Despite the increasing prevalence of celiac disease (CD), the rate of diagnosis remains low. This may be related to the lack of research and publications on CD compared with other gastrointestinal conditions. We hypothesized that CD publications are underrepresented as compared with other gastrointestinal illnesses, and are particularly underrepresented in the USA. GOAL: To explore the rate of CD publication output, comparing it with other gastrointestinal conditions, and to assess for changes over time. STUDY: We used an iterative search process to identify all articles in PubMe

Risk factors for bronchiolitis obliterans: a systematic review of recent publications.

BACKGROUND: Obliterative bronchiolitis remains the major limitation to long-term survival after lung transplantation. A thorough understanding of the factors that confer high risk of developing obliterative bronchiolitis or its physiologic surrogate bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome is important to help define therapeutic strategies. METHODS: We performed a systematic review of studies published since the beginning of 1990. The review excluded non-human studies, publications before 1990, small (less than 25 patients) studies that were predominantly concerned with investigating the pathogenesi

Translational Inefficiencies in Traumatic Brain Injury Research: Evidence From 94 399 Publications.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Despite extensive investigation, no proven neuroprotective therapy exists for traumatic brain injury. Although this translational gap has been widely discussed, it has not been objectively characterized through systematic analysis. We hypothesized that this deficit reflects not only biological intractability but also constraints within the research ecosystem that impede translational progress. METHODS: Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus were searched without date or document type restrictions. A natural language processing pipeline screened results and classified st

Fragment-to-Lead Medicinal Chemistry Publications in 2024: A Tenth Annual Perspective.

Fragment-based drug discovery (FBDD) has led to dozens of clinical compounds, including eight approved drugs. For the past decade, we have published an annual review of successful fragment-to-lead (F2L) medicinal chemistry programs. This Perspective marks the tenth in the series. We analyze the 18 F2L case studies from 2024 and put them in the context of the larger set of 233 examples dating back to 2015. We hope that the lessons herein will both inform and inspire researchers to discover the next generation of drugs.

Bibliometric Analysis of Publications on Prenatal Genetic Screening Using Cell-Free DNA.

Prenatal genetic testing plays a vital role in the early detection of fetal chromosomal abnormalities, with cell-free DNA (cfDNA) testing emerging as a highly accurate noninvasive screening method. By analyzing fetal DNA fragments in maternal plasma, cfDNA-based tests have significantly improved the detection of conditions such as trisomies.  Bibliometric analysis is a quantitative research method used to evaluate publication trends, citation patterns, and research impact within a specific scientific field. By analyzing bibliographic data, it provides insights into scholarly productivity, infl

Scientific impact of the National Birth Defects Prevention Network multistate collaborative publications.

BACKGROUND: Given the lack of a national, population-based birth defects surveillance program in the United States, the National Birth Defects Prevention Network (NBDPN) has facilitated important studies on surveillance, research, and prevention of major birth defects. We sought to summarize NBDPN peer-reviewed publications and their impact. METHODS: We obtained and reviewed a curated list of 49 NBDPN multistate collaborative publications during 2000-2022, as of December 31, 2022. Each publication was reviewed and classified by type (e.g., risk factor association analysis). Key characteristic

Open Science Practices in Gambling Research Publications (2016-2019): A Scoping Review.

The replication crisis has stimulated researchers around the world to adopt open science research practices intended to reduce publication bias and improve research quality. Open science practices include study pre-registration, open data, open access, and avoiding methods that can lead to publication bias and low replication rates. Although gambling studies uses similar research methods as behavioral research fields that have struggled with replication, we know little about the uptake of open science research practices in gambling-focused research. We conducted a scoping review of 500 recent

Scientific X-ray: Scanning and quantifying the idea evolution of scientific publications.

The rapid development of modern science nowadays makes it rather challenging to pick out valuable ideas from massive scientific literature. Existing widely-adopted citation-based metrics are not adequate for measuring how well the idea presented by a single publication is developed and whether it is worth following. Here, inspired by traditional X-ray imaging, which returns internal structure imaging of real objects along with corresponding structure analysis, we propose Scientific X-ray, a framework that quantifies the development degree and development potential for any scientific idea throu

The 50 most cited publications in endoscopic third ventriculostomy: a bibliometric analysis.

OBJECTIVEAlthough endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) for the treatment of hydrocephalus was introduced in 1923, the method was relegated to the sidelines in favor of extracranial techniques. Since the 1990s to the beginning of the current century, however, ETV has undergone a remarkable resurgence to become the first-line treatment for obstructive hydrocephalus, and for some groups, the procedure has been applied for communicating hydrocephalus as well. In the present study, the authors identified the top 50 cited ETV works. These articles represent works of significance that document curr

Gender Representation in Authorship of Original Research Publications in Medical Student Journals.

BACKGROUND: Despite the increasing proportion of female medical students globally, women remain a minority of authors in mainstream medical journals. Whether similar differences in gender representation extend to medical student journals (MSJs) remains unknown. In this bibliometric analysis, we explored female author representation in student-authored original research articles published in MSJs over the past decade. METHODS: Using a standardized search strategy, we identified English-language MSJs that are currently active and have been continuously operating for ≥10 years. We used a hierarc
