Suppression of optokinesis during smooth pursuit eye movements revisited: the role of extra-retinal information.

When our eyes track objects that are moving in a richly structured environment, the retinal image of the stationary visual scene inevitably moves over the retina in a direction opposite to the eye movement. Such self-motion-induced global retinal slip usually provides an ideal stimulus for the optokinetic reflex. This reflex operates to compensate for global image flow. However, during smooth pursuit eye movements it must be shut down so that the reflex does not counteract the voluntary pursuit of moving targets. Here, we asked if retinal information is sufficient for this cancellation of the

Effect of osteopathic vs sham treatment and test-retest improvements on smooth pursuit eye movements.

OBJECTIVE: While positive impacts of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) on the human visual system have long been proposed, even in individuals without visual or oculomotor symptoms, scientific evidence supporting this hypothesis remains insufficient. This randomized, three-arm parallel clinical trial aimed to compare the effects of OMT vs. sham OMT and test-retest improvements on ocular pursuit. METHODS: 145 participants aged 18-35 years were randomly assigned to one of three groups: an experimental OMT group (n = 53), a sham OMT group (n = 51), or a no-treatment control group that rec

Cognitive processes involved in smooth pursuit eye movements: behavioral evidence, neural substrate and clinical correlation.

Smooth-pursuit eye movements allow primates to track moving objects. Efficient pursuit requires appropriate target selection and predictive compensation for inherent processing delays. Prediction depends on expectation of future object motion, storage of motion information and use of extra-retinal mechanisms in addition to visual feedback. We present behavioral evidence of how cognitive processes are involved in predictive pursuit in normal humans and then describe neuronal responses in monkeys and behavioral responses in patients using a new technique to test these cognitive controls. The new

Keep your eyes on the ball: smooth pursuit eye movements enhance prediction of visual motion.

Success of motor behavior often depends on the ability to predict the path of moving objects. Here we asked whether tracking a visual object with smooth pursuit eye movements helps to predict its motion direction. We developed a paradigm, "eye soccer," in which observers had to either track or fixate a visual target (ball) and judge whether it would have hit or missed a stationary vertical line segment (goal). Ball and goal were presented briefly for 100-500 ms and disappeared from the screen together before the perceptual judgment was prompted. In pursuit conditions, the ball moved towards th

Effects of unilateral ocular motor nerve palsies on smooth pursuit eye movements in adult patients.

AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of single ocular muscle weakness on smooth pursuit eye movements. METHODS: Infrared video recordings of horizontal and vertical eye movements were obtained from 14 adult patients with either unilateral abducens nerve palsy or trochlear nerve palsy. During the recordings, subsequent series of horizontal, vertical and oblique ramp stimuli of 10 degrees/s constant target velocity and +/-10 degrees amplitude were presented under monocular viewing conditions. RESULTS: In both forms of ocular nerve palsies, similar changes of pursuit eye

Differences in cerebral activation during smooth pursuit and saccadic eye movements using positron-emission tomography.

BACKGROUND: Abnormalities of smooth pursuit eye movements occur commonly in schizophrenia, but the pathophysiological significance of these abnormalities is unknown. To address this, the authors conducted a pilot study in which we examined differences in regional cerebral activation using positron-emission tomography (PET) in normal volunteers as they performed two types of eye movements. METHODS: Cerebral activation in 10 normal volunteers was studied using C15O2 PET while subjects tracked a visual target using smooth pursuit and saccadic eye movements. Smooth Pursuit and Reflexive Saccade in Discriminating Multiple-System Atrophy With Predominant Parkinsonism From Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Performing the differential diagnosis of Parkinson's disease (PD) and multiple-system atrophy of parkinsonian type (MSA-P) is challenging. The oculomotor performances of patients with PD and MSA-P were investigated to explore their potential role as a biomarker for this differentiation. METHODS: Reflexive saccades and smooth pursuit were examined in 56 patients with PD and 34 with MSA-P in the off-medication state. RESULTS: Patients with PD and MSA-P had similar oculomotor abnormalities of prolonged and hypometric reflexive saccades. The incidence rates of decreased r

Smooth Pursuit Eye-Movement Abnormalities Associated With Cervical Spine Whiplash: A Scientific Review and Case Report.

Whiplash injuries may disrupt normal cervical afferent and efferent projections. Oculomotor abnormalities have been reported in chronic whiplash cases, but there is limited knowledge of their presence in acute whiplash and how acute assessment may target early intervention. We present a literature review and case study of a 22-year-old female presenting with an acute concussion and whiplash secondary to a high-speed motor vehicle collision. Smooth pursuit eye-movement abnormalities were observed in relative cervical rotation in the setting of clinical examination of cervicogenic dysfunction. T

Medications influencing central cholinergic neurotransmission affect saccadic and smooth pursuit eye movements in healthy young adults.

RATIONALE: Acetylcholine is an important neuromodulator in the central nervous system, where it plays a significant role in central functions such as the regulation of movement. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the pharmacological effects of over-the-counter anticholinergic medications on saccadic and smooth pursuit eye movements, in order to establish the significance of central cholinergic pathways in the control of these centrally regulated oculomotor processes. METHODS: Sixteen subjects (mean age 23 ± 3 years, 9 females) performed pro-saccadic, anti-saccadic and smooth pursuit eye move

Smooth pursuit eye movement training promotes recovery from auditory and visual neglect: a randomized controlled study.

BACKGROUND: No treatment for auditory neglect and no randomized controlled trial evaluating smooth pursuit eye movement therapy (SPT) for multimodal neglect are available. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of SPT and visual scanning therapy (VST) on auditory and visual neglect in chronic stroke patients with neglect. METHODS: A randomized, prospective trial was conducted. Fifty patients with left auditory and visual neglect were randomly assigned. Twenty-four patients completed SPT therapy and 21 patients VST. Five patients (4 VST, 1 SPT) were lost. Each group received 1-hour sessions of neg

[Study of non-visually induced smooth pursuit eye movements and their predictability using pseudorandom target motion].

It has been found that the smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEM) are elicited by not only visual stimuli but also non-visual information such as the subject's fingertip movement and a moving sound source. We have already reported the quantitative analysis of SPEM which were induced by somatosensory and acoustic information. In the previous study, we used a sinusoidal waveform that could be highly predictable. Since it is wellknown that predictive control has an important role in the normal SPEM, we expect the predictive control to function in non-visually induced SPEM (NVSPEM). We quantitatively

Smooth pursuit eye movement dysfunction in abstinent cocaine abusers: effects of a paternal history of alcoholism.

The present study evaluated smooth pursuit eye movement (SPEM) function in 36 cocaine-dependent patients, with or without a paternal history of alcoholism, and 12 nondrug-dependent normal volunteers. None of the subjects in either group met DSM-III-R diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia, or delusional, major affective, or schizotypal personality disorders. None possessed a history of seizures, significant head injury, HIV-1 infection, or regular medication use. SPEMs were elicited by a pendulum, oscillated at 0.5 Hz, and recorded using electro-oculographic techniques. Tracking accuracy was es

Control of the gain of visual-motor transmission occurs in visual coordinates for smooth pursuit eye movements.

Sensory inputs control motor behavior with a strength, or gain, that can be modulated according to the movement conditions. In smooth pursuit eye movements, the response to a brief perturbation of target motion is larger during pursuit of a moving target than during fixation of a stationary target. As a step toward identifying the locus and mechanism of gain modulation, we test whether it acts on signals that are in visual or motor coordinates. Monkeys tracked targets that moved at 15°/s in one of eight directions, including left, right, up, down, and the four oblique directions. In eight-nint

Accurate detection of cerebellar smooth pursuit eye movement abnormalities via mobile phone video and machine learning.

Eye movements are disrupted in many neurodegenerative diseases and are frequent and early features in conditions affecting the cerebellum. Characterizing eye movements is important for diagnosis and may be useful for tracking disease progression and response to therapies. Assessments are limited as they require an in-person evaluation by a neurology subspecialist or specialized and expensive equipment. We tested the hypothesis that important eye movement abnormalities in cerebellar disorders (i.e., ataxias) could be captured from iPhone video. Videos of the face were collected from individuals

After Effects of Cerebellar Continuous Theta Burst Stimulation on Reflexive Saccades and Smooth Pursuit in Humans.

The use of cerebellar repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation has been attempted for perturbing reflexive and voluntary eye movements, but discrepancies are seen between the results of distinct studies possibly due to the different stimulation sites, intensities, and paradigms. We describe the after effects of 20 and 40 s continuous Theta Burst Stimulation (cTBS) as compared to sham stimulation, applied over the lateral cerebellar vermis and paravermis on Reflexive Saccades (RS) and Smooth Pursuit (SP) eye movements, recorded in the 30 min following stimulation. Cerebral control of eye movements. I. The relationship between cerebral lesion sites and smooth pursuit deficits.

We investigated smooth pursuit eye movements in 72 patients with focal cerebral lesions using a sinusoidal pursuit task at multiple target frequencies and amplitudes. Twenty patients had normal pursuit gain and symmetry at all target frequencies, 12 had strictly ipsilesional pursuit deficit, 19 had symmetric bi-directional pursuit deficit, 18 had asymmetric bi-directional pursuit deficit (the deficit being more severe on the side of the lesion) and three had more severe contra-directional deficit. Normal pursuit gain was found in patients whose lesions were limited to the frontal, temporal and

Initial tracking conditions modulate the gain of visuo-motor transmission for smooth pursuit eye movements in monkeys.

Smooth pursuit eye movements allow primates to keep gaze pointed at small objects moving across stationary surroundings. In monkeys trained to track a small moving target, we have injected brief perturbations of target motion under different initial conditions as probes to read out the state of the visuo-motor pathways that guide pursuit. A large eye movement response was evoked if the perturbation was applied to a moving target the monkey was tracking. A small response was evoked if the same perturbation was applied to a stationary target the monkey was fixating. The gain of the response to t
