Suppression tuning in noise-exposed rabbits.

Psychophysical, basilar-membrane (BM), and single nerve-fiber tuning curves, as well as suppression of distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs), all give rise to frequency tuning patterns with stereotypical features. Similarities and differences between the behaviors of these tuning functions, both in normal conditions and following various cochlear insults, have been documented. While neural tuning curves (NTCs) and BM tuning curves behave similarly both before and after cochlear insults known to disrupt frequency selectivity, DPOAE suppression tuning curves (STCs) do not necessarily

Early neuromotor behavior in craniosynostotic rabbits.

OBJECTIVE: Clinical studies have shown both abnormal and normal mental and psychomotor development in patients with craniosynostosis. However, a number of confounding variables make study comparisons difficult. For these reasons, the present study describes early neuromotor development in an homogeneous rabbit model of craniosynostosis. DESIGN: Fifty-three newborn New Zealand white rabbit kits were used: 13 were wild-type, normal control rabbits; 23 had delayed-onset coronal suture synostosis (onset is approximately 57 to 74 days post conception); and 17 had early-onset coronal suture synosto

Brain growth rates in craniosynostotic rabbits.

OBJECTIVE: It has been suggested that abnormal brain morphology or growth rates may be a primary causal factor of craniosynostosis due, in part, to a lack of normal growth stretch and tension at the sutural margins. The purpose of the present study was to quantify cerebral hemisphere morphology and growth in a rabbit model of nonsyndromic coronal suture synostosis to determine whether cerebral dysmorphology is primary or secondary to synostosis in this model. DESIGN: Fifty-seven brains (114 hemispheres) were examined from 40 normal control rabbits and 17 rabbits with bilateral coronal suture

Experimental lumbar spondylolisthesis in growing rabbits.

Lumbosacral spondylolisthesis was provoked experimentally in growing rabbits by means of a bilateral facet joint resection at the L7-S1 segment. The effects of additional immobilization of the L6-L7 segment with bone cement and of severing the lumbosacral disc on the development of the olisthesis were tested. A mean ventral slip of 21% was seen after the facet joint resection. The slip resembled the spondylolisthesis seen in humans in wedging of the olisthetic vertebra, sacral rounding, and increased sagittal rotation. Combining the facet joint resection with immobilization of the L6-L7 segmen

Pseudomonas aeruginosa keratitis in leukopenic rabbits.

To study the role of the host inflammatory response in Pseudomonas aeruginosa keratitis, rabbits were made leukopenic with intravenous injections of cyclophosphamide and dexamethasone. Twenty-four hr later, keratitis was initiated in all rabbits with an intrastromal injection of 1,000 log phase P. aeruginosa strain 27853. Slit lamp examination of eyes showed that leukopenic rabbits had significantly less (P < 0.0001) ocular pathology at 16, 22, and 27 hr postinfection. The number of viable bacteria recovered from corneas of leukopenic rabbits was the same as the number recovered from nonleukop

Pathology of congenital syphilis in rabbits.

We have developed a model for congenital syphilis in the rabbit. This report provides additional information on newborn tissue pathology in animals that were infected in utero. A total of 35 pregnancies were evaluated, each containing 6 to 12 newborns. In the infected group, the mortality was approximately 50%; of the live newborns, half appeared normal and half were hyperreflexic, weak, and runty. Gross pathology in the sickly newborns was quite prevalent and involved enlarged spleens with isolated spots of necrosis; enlarged livers that were overtly congested and hemorrhagic and had numerous

Eucapnic hyperventilation-induced bronchoconstriction in rabbits.

We examined whether eucapnic hyperventilation with dry air produces the bronchoconstriction in anesthetized, non-sensitized rabbits and in ovalbumin sensitized rabbits. Eucapnic hyperventilation challenge with dry air containing 5% CO2 at room temperature was performed with 4 non-sensitized and 7 sensitized rabbits by mechanical ventilation for 15 min (120 breaths/min, 7 ml tidal volume/kg body weight). Total lung resistance (RL) and dynamic compliance (Cdyn) were measured before and 0, 5, 15, and 30 min after hyperventilation. In non-sensitized rabbits, RL and Cdyn did not change significantl

[Pathology of Schistosomiasis mansoni in rabbits].

The pathology of schistosomiasis mansoni in rabbits was studied with special consideration to worm burden and duration of infection. Heavy and prolonged infections resulted in severe changes involving the intrahepatic portal vein branches, such as: polypoid endophlebitis, granulomatous endophlebitis and, later on, vascular occlusion and recanalization, vascular ectasia, fibrosis and hyalinization of the endothelial polyps. Living and dead adult worms, rather than the mature eggs, were the main pathogenetic factors. For some time the lesions tend to be limited to the portal vein branches, not e

Intestinal repair in chronically undernourished rabbits.

To assess the effect of chronic undernutrition on intestinal epithelial repair after injury, we studied 10-wk-old rabbits, nutritionally deprived for 6 wk (body weight 1.95 +/- 0.2 kg versus controls, 2.68 +/- 0.7 kg, p less than 0.001). Intestinal structure and function were assessed 4, 24, 48, 72, or 96 h after a 90-min vascular occlusion of a 20-cm segment of midintestine in undernourished and control-diet animals. Tritiated thymidine autoradiography showed that movement of epithelial cells along the crypt-villus axis was significantly curtailed in undernourished rabbits after sham operatio

Experimental unilateral coronal synostosis in rabbits.

Immobilization of the coronal suture was produced unilaterally in 9-day-old rabbits to determine its effect on subsequent craniofacial development. The suture was immobilized unilaterally by the topical application of methylcyanoacrylate adhesive. Subsequent growth effects on the cranial vault, base, and facial skeleton were assessed by serial radiographic cephalometry. Unilateral coronal suture immobilization resulted in significantly decreased bone growth at the coronal suture (mean 0.95 mm +/- 0.35 SE) when compared to sham-treated control animals (mean 5.06 mm +/- 0.20 SE). Perthes' disease in rabbits and puppies.

An effusion was simulated in the hip joints of rabbits and puppies known to be susceptible to Perthes' disease. The effusion was produced by the injection of glycol wax. The object of producing the effusion was to show that a transitory interruption of the venous flow was capable of producing changes that would subsequently manifest the pathologic changes and establish a Perthes-like disease.

Furosemide decreases ventilation in young rabbits.

To test the hypothesis that furosemide would cause metabolic alkalosis and thus alveolar hypoventilation, normal rabbit pups were given either furosemide (4 mg/kg/day) or saline solution for the first 8 to 10 days of life. Pups given furosemide developed primary metabolic alkalosis and reduced ventilation, which resulted in secondary respiratory acidosis. Lung compliance was improved by furosemide, and the ventilatory response to CO2 was unaffected. KCl injection in alkalotic pups increased ventilation and decreased pH. The data show that conventional doses of furosemide can (1) cause metaboli

Immunity to pasteurellosis in compromised rabbits.

Pasteurellosis in the rabbit inoculated with a malignant variant of Shope fibroma virus (SFV-MV) is presented as a model for the study of immunosuppression and immunoprophylaxis in pasteurellosis. The rabbits, before the inoculation, were healthy carriers of Pasteurella multocida. They were intradermally inoculated with SFV-MV, and 3 to 6 days later, a primary tumor appeared at the site of inoculation. By postinoculation day (PID) 7 or 8, the rabbits had snuffles, conjunctivitis, and tumor metastases; death occurred on PID 10 to 14. Rabbits given the nonmalignant Patuxent strain of SFV develop

Spontaneous "primary biliary cirrhosis" in rabbits.

A syndrome resembling human Primary Biliary Cirrhosis (PBC) and occurring spontaneously in a strain of domesticated rabbits from the Faenza region in Italy, is reported. The syndrome is characterized by histological liver changes consisting of chronic non-suppurative destructive cholangitis and copper accumulation, biochemical and immunological abnormalities mainly represented by an elevation of serum alkaline phosphatase and a positive antimitochondrial antibody test. The abnormalities were not observed in newborn rabbits from the same area nor in control rabbits from the island of Sardinia.

Experimental vascular occlusion in hypercholesterolemic rabbits.

Rabbits fed a diet rich in cholesterol developed hypercholesterolemia and atheromas in the cornea, sclera, iris, ciliary body, and choroid, and a few synchysis scintillans in the vitreous. The fellow eye of these rabbits, in which one nasal vortex vein was occluded, developed far more severe changes in all the above-mentioned eye tissues, especially over the sector of the eye drained by the occluded vein. In hypercholesterolemic rabbits in which a short posterior ciliary artery was occluded, the ischemic area of the choroid was gradually seem to become infiltrated with large crystalline partic

Experimental Yersinia enterocolitica enteritis in rabbits.

Young rabbits weighing 500 to 800 g were inoculated orogastrically with clinical isolates of Yersinia enterocolitica (serotype O:3; enterotoxigenic; HeLa cell invasive) at a dose of 1.4 X 10(10) bacteria suspended in 10% sodium bicarbonate solution. Diarrhea developed in 41 (87%) of 47 rabbits, with a mean +/- standard deviation onset at 5.4 +/- 2.4 days. The attack rate and onset of diarrhea were correlated with inoculum size. The 50% infectious dose was 2.9 X 10(8) bacteria. Bacterial colonization occurred in almost all rabbits, regardless of inoculum size. Seroconversion was demonstrated in

Experimental aerogenic pulmonary berylliosis in rabbits.

The dynamics of pulmonary changes produced by a prolonged daily administration of 1 g per cent solution of BeSO4 in aerosols was pursued by current histopathological methods in periodically sacrificed rabbits. A progressive constitution of beryliosic granulomas involving intralobular and interlobular areas was observed. The epithelioids and giant cells were present in variable proportions. Concomitantly, a cellular thickening of alveolar walls and perivascular cuffs was noted, as well as an intercellular reticulin fibrillogenesis. The intratracheal three-fold administration of a 0.3 g per cent

[Local Schwartzman phenomenon in axenic rabbits].

Local Schwartzman phenomenon was produced by coli-endotoxin in all the germfree rabbits tested (11 in all) at the age of 102 to 135 days. Any kinds of natural antibodies were not detected in sera of the rabbits, which in fact were found to be agammaglobulinaemic in most cases, as revealed by immunoelectrophoresis. These facts suggested that the germfree rabbits utilized here had not been sensitized to bacterial endotoxins. From the results obtained here, it may be concluded that the existence of hypersensitivity to endotoxin is not necessary to the production of local Schwartzman phenomenon by
