In Vivo Safety Studies With SPBN GASGAS in the Frame of Oral Vaccination of Foxes and Raccoon Dogs Against Rabies.

In order to obtain Marketing Authorization for an oral rabies vaccine in the European Union, not only safety studies in the target species, red fox and raccoon dog, are required. Since baits are distributed unsupervised in the environment, specific safety studies in selected non-target species are compulsory. Furthermore, oral rabies vaccines are based on live, replication-competent viruses and thus distinct safety studies in the target species for such type of vaccines are also mandatory. Here, the results of these safety studies in target and selected non-target species for a 3rd generation

Maintenance of skeletal muscle energy homeostasis during prolonged wintertime fasting in the raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides).

The raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) is a canid species with autumnal fattening and prolonged wintertime fasting. Nonpathological body weight cycling and the ability to tolerate food deficiency make this species a unique subject for studying physiological mechanisms in energy metabolism. AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a cellular energy sensor regulating energy homeostasis. During acute fasting, AMPK promotes fatty acid oxidation and enhances glucose uptake. We evaluated the effects of prolonged fasting on muscle energy metabolism in farm-bred raccoon dogs. Total and phosphorylate

Trichinella nativa and T. spiralis induce distinguishable histopathologic and humoral responses in the raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides).

Three experimental groups of six male raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) each were formed by placing one of three littermates from six litters into each group. One group was inoculated with pig-origin Trichinella spiralis, the second was inoculated with raccoon dog-origin T. nativa, and the third served as a control group. The infective dose was 1,000 larvae/kg of body weight. Every third week, biopsies from M. triceps brachii were taken, and serum samples were collected for up to 12 weeks postinfection. In the early phase of the infection, cysts of both parasites were elongated cylinders

Protection of black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) against plague after voluntary consumption of baits containing recombinant raccoon poxvirus vaccine.

Prairie dogs (Cynomys spp.) are highly susceptible to Yersinia pestis and significant reservoirs of plague for humans in the western United States. A recombinant raccoon poxvirus, expressing the F1 antigen of Y. pestis, was incorporated into a palatable bait and offered to 18 black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) for voluntary consumption; 18 negative control animals received placebo baits. Antibody titers against Y. pestis F1 antigen increased significantly (P < 0.01) in vaccinees, and their survival was significantly higher upon challenge with Y. pestis than that of negative contr

Detection of spotted fever and typhus group rickettsial infection in wild raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides koreensis) in Chonbuk Province, Korea.

Both the spotted fever and the typhus group rickettsioses are potential emerging arthropod-borne infectious disease complexes in Korea. Wild raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides koreensis) sheltered at the Korean Society for the Protection of Wild Animals, Chonbuk Branch, Korea, were sampled for the presence of spotted fever and typhus group rickettsial pathogens. Thirty-six serum samples of wild raccoon dogs were examined by an indirect fluorescent antibody test using type-specific YH strain Rickettsia japonica (spotted fever group rickettsia) and Wilmington strain Rickettsia typhi (typhus

Cervids and raccoon dogs as wildlife sentinels for the geographical distribution of tick-borne encephalitis virus and Francisella tularensis in Denmark.

Collecting and testing ticks for rare tick-borne pathogen surveillance can be labour-intensive and true absence of rare pathogens in ticks is difficult to determine. Nevertheless, knowledge of the distribution of tick-borne pathogens is relevant for risk assessment and diagnosis. Tick-borne encephalitis and tularemia are rare human tick-borne diseases. Knowledge of the distribution of the pathogens of these diseases in Denmark is limited. The aim of this study was to assess the geographical distribution of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) and Francisella tularensis using wildlife as sentin

Genetic evidence for domestic raccoon dog rabies caused by Arctic-like rabies virus in Inner Mongolia, China.

An outbreak of rabies affected domestic raccoon dogs on an animal farm in Inner Mongolia, China in 2007. A study was conducted to characterize the aetiological agent and clarify the origin of the rabies virus. Brain tissues were obtained from five rabid raccoon dogs. Viral nucleoprotein antigen was detected in the brain tissues and five rabies viruses were isolated from these rabid animals. Phylogenetic analysis of the N and G gene sequences showed that these isolates were closely related to Arctic-like rabies viruses isolated from the far-eastern region of Russia and South Korea, but distinct

Effects of Dietary Protein and Starch Digestion Rates on Jejunal and Cecal Microbial Community States and Feed Efficiency in Raccoon Dogs.

Feed efficiency remains a significant challenge in farmed raccoon dogs, and performance differences can occur even when diets are formulated with similar nutrient levels. Beyond nutrient concentrations, digestion kinetics can alter the timing of carbon and nitrogen availability along the gastrointestinal tract, thereby influencing microbial assembly in a segment-specific way. Twenty 2-month-old male raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) were divided into four dietary groups (n = 5) in a 2 × 2 factorial design. The design combined protein-source formulations containing either soybean cake or

Protective antibody response in Korean raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procynoide koreensis) administered a new rabies bait vaccine containing the ERAGS-GFP strain.

PURPOSE: Rabies is a deadly zoonotic disease affecting many mammals, including humans. Oral rabies bait vaccines induce an immune response without direct inoculation, and are crucial for controlling rabies in wildlife. This study evaluated the safety and immunogenicity of a new rabies bait vaccine containing a recombinant rabies virus expressing green fluorescent protein (ERAGS-GFP) in wild raccoon dogs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To confirm the safety of the ERAGS-GFP vaccine, reversion to virulence was evaluated in 1-day-old suckling mice. The uptake, minimum effective dose, and immunogenicity

Oral vaccination of foxes and raccoon dogs against rabies with the 3rd generation oral rabies virus vaccine, SPBN GASGAS, in Finland.

BACKGROUND: To prevent re-emergence of wildlife-mediated rabies in Finland, oral rabies vaccine baits are distributed every year during autumn in southern Finland in a vaccination zone bordering Russia. Recently, Finland introduced a 3rd generation oral rabies virus vaccine bait. By analysing bait uptake and seroconversion in red foxes and raccoon dogs, the field efficacy of this new vaccine strain, SPBN GASGAS, was compared with the originally used highly efficacious 1st generation vaccine SAD B19. RESULTS: Overall, 74.6% and 53.9% of the animals submitted from the vaccination area after the

Coexistence of two different genotypes of Sarcoptes scabiei derived from companion dogs and wild raccoon dogs in Gifu, Japan: The genetic evidence for transmission between domestic and wild canids.

Sarcoptes scabiei is the causal agent of sarcoptic mange in domestic/companion dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) and raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides). Although there have been successful cases of experimental transmission of S. scabiei from mangy wild Canidae hosts to healthy dogs, and suspected cases of transmission between raccoon dogs and companion dogs, no clear-cut evidence has been obtained. In the present study, the genetic relationships between Sarcoptes mites from raccoon dogs and companion dogs living in the same region were elucidated. One hundred and thirty Sarcoptes mites from 2

Efficient distribution of oral vaccines examined by infrared triggered camera for advancing the control of raccoon dog rabies in South Korea.

The field distribution of the oral rabies vaccine is effective in controlling the spread of rabies. The present study aimed to investigate efficient distribution locations based on the environment, contact rate, and consumption by target wildlife species in South Korea. The target species (Korean raccoon dogs, domestic dogs, and feral cats) accounted for 945 contacts (52.2%), in total 1,808 contacts. There were 863 (47.8%) contacts by non-target species. Raccoon dogs, a main reservoir of rabies in South Korea, had the highest contact rate (34.1%) among all species. The contact rate by target s

Severe impact of sarcoptic mange on the movements and space use for one of its most important vector species, the raccoon dog.

Sarcoptic mange is a highly contagious zoonotic skin disease that can have severe effect on population dynamics of many wild mammals. However, very little is known about its effect on the activity and space use of infected animals. In this study we equipped two raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) in a mange outbreak area with radio-collars and observed the spatial and temporal effects of sarcoptic mange to these individuals. Initially, the raccoon dogs had no external symptoms of mange infection, but developed these during the study period. One of the raccoon dogs died just 32 and the othe

Homogenous Population Genetic Structure of the Non-Native Raccoon Dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) in Europe as a Result of Rapid Population Expansion.

The extent of gene flow during the range expansion of non-native species influences the amount of genetic diversity retained in expanding populations. Here, we analyse the population genetic structure of the raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) in north-eastern and central Europe. This invasive species is of management concern because it is highly susceptible to fox rabies and an important secondary host of the virus. We hypothesized that the large number of introduced animals and the species' dispersal capabilities led to high population connectivity and maintenance of genetic diversity thr

Whole-genome shotgun metagenomics reveals environmental perturbations in the gut microbiome and resistome of wild raccoon dogs rescued at a wildlife center.

Raccoon dogs are potential vectors for the transmission of zoonotic pathogens and antimicrobial resistance, with their gut microbiome carrying genetic determinants of virulence and resistance. However, previous studies have primarily relied on traditional culture-based approaches, limiting our understanding of the entire dynamics and genetic potential of the gut microbiome in raccoon dogs. In this study, we employed both culture-dependent approach and whole-genome shotgun sequencing in raccoon dogs undergoing rehabilitation for eight weeks. We integratively assessed how rehabilitation-related

First genetic characterization and phylogenetic analysis of Okutama tick virus in a tick collected from a raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) in South Korea.

Okutama tick virus (OKTV) is a novel tick-borne RNA virus that has been reported in Japan and China. In the present study, an OKTV was detected in Haemaphysalis flava that had bitten a raccoon dog in South Korea by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction using viral family-specific primers. Whole-genome sequencing revealed that the South Korean OKTV strain contains L and S segments with lengths of 6,529 and 1,890 nucleotides, respectively. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that OKTV strains formed two clusters based on the L segment and three clusters based on the S segment, with the Sout
