What's race got to do with it? Factors contributing to self-change from cocaine use disorder among Black adults.

INTRODUCTION: A substantial number of people with substance use disorders recover without formal treatment, though we know little about the process of self-change among Black adults with cocaine use disorder (CUD) and whether racism contributes to the development of CUD and these adults' process of self-change. METHODS: The study team conducted qualitative interviews with 29 Black adults using a narrative and phenomenological approach. At the time of the interview, all participants met criteria for DSM-5 CUD prior to the past year but did not meet criteria for CUD in the past year and reporte

Variations in prostate biopsy recommendation and acceptance confound evaluation of risk factors for prostate cancer: Examining race and BMI.

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer is ubiquitous in older men; differential screening patterns and variations in biopsy recommendations and acceptance will affect which man is diagnosed and, therefore, evaluation of cancer risk factors. We describe a statistical method to reduce prostate cancer detection bias among African American (n = 3398) and Non-Hispanic White men (n = 22,673) who participated in the Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention trial (SELECT) and revisit a previously reported association between race, obesity and prostate cancer risk. METHODS: For men with screening values suggesti

Race, Hispanic origin, and socioeconomic status in relation to motor vehicle occupant death rates and risk factors among adults.

Black and Hispanic adults travel less in motor vehicles than whites but may be at greater risk when they do travel. Passenger vehicle occupant deaths per 10 million trips among persons ages 25-64 were computed by race, Hispanic origin, gender, and socioeconomic status (SES) using 1995 data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) and Nationwide Personal Transportation Survey. Educational level was used as the indicator of SES. Blacks, particularly black men, were at increased risk of dying relative to whites when traveling in motor vehicles (rate ratio (RR) for black men=1.48; 95% co

Variation by Race and Ethnicity in the Population Attributable Fractions Associated With Key Tuberculosis Risk Factors in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: Although the overall incidence of tuberculosis (TB) in the United States has declined in the last 2 decades, the incidence among racial and ethnic minority populations remains elevated. The objective of this study was to estimate the contributions of 4 risk factors to the incidence of TB, stratified by race and ethnicity and recent transmission in the United States. METHODS: We estimated the population attributable fractions (PAFs) of TB and TB attributed to recent transmission (RT-TB) associated with HIV, diabetes, current incarceration, and past-year experience of homelessness in

Determinants of Pancreatic Size and Fat Content in the UK Biobank: Influence of Race, Genetic Variants, and Risk Factors.

OBJECTIVE: Pancreas size and fat content differ in individuals with diabetes, but it is not clear how pancreas imaging features are impacted by race, genetics, and lifestyle factors. METHODS: We performed cross-sectional analysis of 37 163 UK Biobank participants with pancreas imaging data to investigate racial and genetic influences on pancreas volume index (PVI) and pancreatic fat fraction (PFF). We further assessed the influence of prior glycemic status and lifestyle factors on pancreas size and composition after adjusting for sex and age. RESULTS: White nondiabetic individuals had lower

The dual factor structure of self-rated MDQ hypomania: energized-activity versus irritable-thought racing.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar II is diagnosed in a clinically depressed patient by documenting history of hypomania. Therefore, it is of great significance for both clinical and research purposes to characterize the factor structure of hypomania. METHODS: Among consecutive depressive outpatients-126 major depressives and 187 bipolar II-diagnosed by the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (Clinician Version), 181 who had clinically recovered from depression were administered the Mood Disorder Questionnaire (MDQ of. Am. J. Psychiatry 157, 1873). The MDQ is a newly developed, psychometrically validat

Factors mediating community race and ethnicity differences in initial shockable rhythm for out-of-hospital cardiac arrests in Texas.

BACKGROUND: Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients from minoritized communities have lower rates of initial shockable rhythm, which is linked to favorable outcomes. We sought to evaluate the importance of initial shockable rhythm on OHCA outcomes and factors that mediate differences in initial shockable rhythm. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of the 2013-2022 Texas Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival (TX-CARES). Using census tract data, we stratified OHCAs into majority race/ethnicity communities: >50% White, >50% Black, and >50% Hispanic/Latino. We compared logist

Race/Ethnic Differences in Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors Among Patients With Hypertension: Analysis From 143 Primary Care Clinics.

BACKGROUND: While it is known that sex and race/ethnic disparities persist for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), disparities in risk factor control have not been well-described in primary care where ASCVD can be prevented. METHODS: Adult patients with a hypertension diagnosis without ASCVD were included in this analysis of electronic health records from a large US healthcare system from 2018. Patients were categorized based on risk factor control defined as blood pressure (BP) <130/80 mm Hg; statin prescription among patients with indications, HbA1c of <7%, and not smoking. Mult

Sex, Race, and the Quality of Life Factors Most Important to Patients' Well-Being Among Those Seeking Bariatric Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests obesity-related social stigma and impairment in work function may be the two most detrimental quality of life (QOL) factors to overall well-being among patients seeking weight loss surgery (WLS); whether the relative importance of QOL factors varies across patient sex and race/ethnicity is unclear. METHODS: We interviewed 574 patients seeking WLS at two centers. We measured patient's health utility (preference-based well-being measure) as determined via standard gamble scenarios assessing patients' willingness to risk death to achieve weight loss or perfect healt

Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors in Women: The Impact of Race and Ethnicity: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women, yet differences exist among certain racial and ethnic groups. Aside from traditional risk factors, behavioral and environmental factors and social determinants of health affect cardiovascular health and risk in women. Language barriers, discrimination, acculturation, and health care access disproportionately affect women of underrepresented races and ethnicities. These factors result in a higher prevalence of cardiovascular disease and significant challenges in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular conditions. Culturally se

Experiences and factors associated with transphobic hate crimes among transgender women in the San Francisco Bay Area: comparisons across race.

BACKGROUND: Trans women experience high rates of gender-based violence (GBV)-a risk factor for adverse health outcomes. Transphobic hate crimes are one such form of GBV that affect trans women. However, little is understood about factors that shape transphobic hate crimes and racial/ethnic variation in these experiences. To contextualize GBV risk and police reporting, we examined self-reported types and correlates of transphobic hate crimes by racial/ethnic group of trans women in the San Francisco Bay Area. METHODS: From 2016 to 2018, trans women participated in a longitudinal cohort study o
