Sex Differences in Opioid-Related Mortality Trends in the United States, 1999-2020: By Age, Race/Ethnicity, Region, and Opioid Type.

Background: Previous studies on opioid-related mortality in the United States have largely focused on burden estimation by sex, with limited analysis of temporal trends in sex-based differences in opioid-related overdose deaths. This study examines opioid overdose mortality trends by sex in the United States from 1999 through 2020. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed mortality data from the National Center for Health Statistics' Multiple Cause of Death Files, from 1999 to 2020. Using International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-10 codes (X40-X44, X60-X64, X85, and Y10-Y14 in underlying caus

The Cross-Sectional Relation of Body Mass Index to Adiposity among 8- to 19-Year-Olds within Several Races and Ethnicities.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the screening ability of a high body mass index (BMI) for high adiposity among 8- to 19-year-olds. STUDY DESIGN: This cross-sectional study included 6454 National Health and Nutrition Survey participants from 2011 through 2018. Fat and lean mass were measured with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. We expressed adiposity as fat mass index (FMI, kg ÷ m2) and %fat. RESULTS: Based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 95th percentile, a high BMI correctly classified a high FMI for about 95% of participants in each racial and ethnic group. About 81% (Blacks) to 90

Device-estimated sleep metrics do not mediate the relation between race and blood pressure dipping in young black and white women.

Short, disturbed, and irregular sleep may contribute to blunted nocturnal blood pressure (BP) dipping, a predictor of cardiovascular disease. Black women (BLW) demonstrate less BP dipping and poorer sleep health than White women (WHW). However, it remains unclear whether device-estimated sleep health metrics mediate the relation between race and BP dipping in young women. We hypothesized that the relation between race and BP dipping would be partly mediated by sleep health metrics of sleep duration, sleep efficiency, and sleep regularity. Participants (20 BLW, 17 WHW) were 18-29 years old, nor

Trends in Education-Related Smoking Disparities Among U.S. Black or African American and White Adults: Intersections of Race, Sex, and Region.

INTRODUCTION: Despite its overall decline in the United States, trends in cigarette smoking could vary by intersection with demographic characteristics. We explored trends in education-related disparities in current smoking among U.S. adults by race (Black or African American and White), sex, and U.S. census region. AIMS AND METHODS: Data were from U.S. civilian non-institutionalized adults (aged ≥18 years) who self-identified as Black or African American and White and participated in the 1995-2019 Tobacco Use Supplement to the Current Population Survey. We estimated average annual percent ch

Prevalence of psychiatric disorders at the intersection of race and sexual orientation: Results from the National Epidemiologic Survey of Alcohol and Related Conditions-III.

OBJECTIVE: Sexual minority individuals display elevated rates of psychiatric and substance use disorders compared with heterosexuals. Racial/ethnic minority individuals report lower prevalence of disorders compared with White individuals. Research on sexual minority mental health often neglects research on racial/ethnic minority mental health and vice versa. Therefore, at the intersection of sexual and racial/ethnic minority status, the prevalence of disorders remains unclear. METHOD: In a nationally representative sample (N = 36,309), we compared disorder prevalence between sexual minorities

Differential access to care: The role of age, insurance, and income on race/ethnicity-related disparities in adult perforated appendix admission rates.

BACKGROUND: Differences in perforated appendix admission rates (PAAR) are an ambulatory-sensitive measure of access to care. While pediatric studies report disparities in PAAR, initial adult investigations suggest a lack of racial/ethnic inequity. The objectives of this study were to (1) assess for risk-adjusted, racial/ethnic differences in PAAR among adults on a national scale, (2) consider the extent to which variations (or lack thereof) are explained by age, insurance, and income, and (3) compare results within the United States population to a national segment of the population who are co

Adrenergic-pathway gene variants influence beta-blocker-related outcomes after acute coronary syndrome in a race-specific manner.

OBJECTIVES: Overcoming racial differences in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) outcomes is a strategic goal for U.S. health care. Genetic polymorphisms in the adrenergic pathway seem to explain some outcome differences by race in other cardiovascular diseases treated with β-adrenergic receptor blockade (BB). Whether these genetic variants are associated with survival among ACS patients treated with BB, and if this differs by race, is unknown. BACKGROUND: β-adrenergic receptor blockade after ACS is a measure of quality care, but the effectiveness across racial groups is less clear. METHODS: A pro

Parental Racism-Related Stress and Child Depression: Disparities Across Income and Race/Ethnicity in a National Sample of Racial/Ethnic Minority Families.

BACKGROUND: Vicariously experienced racism-related stress is a key social determinant of child depression, yet national data on racial/ethnic and income disparities in this relationship are limited. OBJECTIVES: This study tested whether non-Hispanic Black (NHB) children and children from lower income households experience more frequent depression linked to parent-experienced racism-related stress than other groups. METHODS: In the 2023 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), 1712 parents of children from minoritized racial/ethnic groups aged 5-17 years (weighted N = 37.7 million) reported t

Both parents matter: a national-scale analysis of parental race/ethnicity, disparities in prenatal PM2.5 exposures and related impacts on birth outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Most U.S. studies that report racial/ethnic disparities in increased risk of low birth weight associated with air pollution exposures have been conducted in California or northeastern states and/or urban areas, limiting generalizability of study results. Few of these studies have examined maternal racial/ethnic groups other than Non-Hispanic Black, non-Hispanic White and Hispanic, nor have they included paternal race. We aimed to examine the independent effects of PM2.5 on birth weight among a nationally representative sample of U.S. singleton infants and how both maternal and pate

Race-specific temporal trends of HPV-related cancers in South Africa: An analysis of the South African National Cancer Registry, 2011-2022.

Evaluating trends in HPV-related cancer rates by race is essential for identifying high-risk populations and improving prevention efforts. Using 2011-2022 South African National Cancer Registry data, we analyzed age-standardized incidence rates by race and sex across three periods (2011-2014, 2015-2018, 2019-2022) using linear regression. Significant increases were observed for oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) among White females (p < .01), vulvar SCC among Asian (p < .01) and Black (p = .02) females, and anal SCC among Colored females and Black males (p < .01). Evolutionary Arms Race between Virus and Host Drives Genetic Diversity in Bat Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-Related Coronavirus Spike Genes.

The Chinese horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus sinicus), reservoir host of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV), carries many bat SARS-related CoVs (SARSr-CoVs) with high genetic diversity, particularly in the spike gene. Despite these variations, some bat SARSr-CoVs can utilize the orthologs of the human SARS-CoV receptor, angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), for entry. It is speculated that the interaction between bat ACE2 and SARSr-CoV spike proteins drives diversity. Here, we identified a series of R. sinicus ACE2 variants with some polymorphic sites involved in the interact

Associations among physical activity, body mass index, and health-related quality of life by race/ethnicity in a diverse sample of breast cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND: Health-related quality of life (HRQOL), body mass index (BMI), and physical activity (PA) levels have all been associated with prognosis following breast cancer and may explain partially the higher mortality for breast cancer in certain racial/ethnic subgroups. In this study, associations between PA, BMI, and HRQOL by race were examined in a sample of breast cancer survivors. METHODS: Measures of PA, BMI, and HRQOL as well as demographic and medical characteristics of women (N = 3013, 13% nonwhite) who participated in the Women's Healthy Eating and Living Study were assessed at ba
