Radiation Exposure Dose Trends and Radiation Dose Reduction Strategies in Medical Imaging.

Since the discovery of x-rays, many investigations of radiation effects on humans have taken place. From the discovery of severe x-ray dermatitis near the end of 1896, the multiple radiation burns endured by Thomas Edison's assistant, Clarence Dally, to the establishment of early radiation regulation in 1929, radiation exposure has been a continuing concern. Studies from the 1940s to the 1960s looked at effects such as leukemia and other cancers that appeared to be caused by exposure to radiation; outcomes of these studies resulted in increased regulation, establishment of dose tolerances and

Radiation exposure for intraoperative 3D scans in a hybrid operating room: how to reduce radiation exposure for the surgical team.

BACKGROUND: Hybrid operating rooms are used in different fields of surgery. In orthopedic surgery, the possibility of a 3D scan of difficult anatomical regions (spine, pelvis) showed promising results not only in navigated screw placement. The associated exposure to radiation raises questions regarding potential risks for the operating room personal and the patient. The present study focuses on scatter radiation during 3D scans in a hybrid operating room, the adjacent rooms, and methods to reduce radiation exposure. MATERIAL AND METHODS: [Formula: see text] i2 dosimeters were used to measure

Reassessment of Radiation Exposure From Bone Scintigraphy.

AIM: This study was aimed to re-determine the radiation dose rate emitted from the patients who underwent bone scintigraphy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A mean of 20.87±2.54 mCi 99mTc-MDP was injected into patients. A GM counter was used to measure dose rates in 3 different periods, at intervals of 25, 50, 100, 150, and 200 cm from the patient's anterior for head, thorax, abdomen, and pelvis levels. Measurements were used to determine patient-induced environmental doses and radiation doses to personnel/patient relatives. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: There were strong correlations between mean dose rate

Physician knowledge of nuclear medicine radiation exposure.

PURPOSE: Because physician knowledge of patient exposure to ionizing radiation from computed tomography (CT) procedures previously has been recognized as poor, the purpose of this systematic review is to determine whether physician or physician trainee knowledge of patient exposure to radiation from nuclear medicine procedures is similarly insufficient. METHODS: Online databases and printed literature were systematically searched to acquire peer-reviewed published research studies involving assessment of physician or physician trainee knowledge of patient radiation exposure levels incurred du

Reducing radiation exposure using commonly available objects.

OBJECTIVES: One and a half years have passed since the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant disaster. The environmental radiation dose rate was not critical, but an existing exposure situation has been identified in a large part of Fukushima Prefecture. Although people continue to live and work in the contaminated area, they are not provided with sufficient information to reduce their exposure to radiation by themselves. In this study, we attempt to evaluate the efficiency of radiation shielding by using everyday items widely available to people. METHODS: NaI scintillation and Geiger-Müller

[Risk from prenatal exposure to ionizing radiation].

Exposure to ionizing radiation during pregnancy always is a worrisome event. Knowledge of teratogenic and carcinogenic mechanisms based on reliable scientific data (ICRP 84) allows appropriate management of patients following exposure to ionizing radiation. Radiation exposure in the setting of diagnostic imaging studies is not associated with an increased risk of fetal malformation; however, the risk of childhood malignancy is minimally increased. This information must be provided to parents so they may reach an informed decision with regards to the outcome of the pregnancy. The analysis of th

Malformations after radiation exposure of preimplantation stages.

Our studies have shown that, contrary to the opinion in most textbooks, it is possible to increase the number of malformed fetuses in one of our mouse strains (originally "Heiligenberger Stamm", meanwhile HLG/Zte) by radiation exposure of zygotes or of subsequent preimplantation stages. The malformation affected most pronouncedly is gastroschisis, a defect occurring at a frequency of 1 to 4% in the controls. The observed increase is strain specific (C57Bl mice or (HLGxC57Bl)F1 hybrids do not react in the same way), it is accompanied by an increased frequency of chromosomal aberrations in skin

Radiation exposure during dynamic hip screw operation.

Exposure to radiation by surgeon and patient was measured in ten cases during insertion of a dynamic hip screw, using image intensified screening. There were low levels of irradiation of the thyroid and eyes of the surgeon. However, the dominant hand of the surgeon was often exposed to higher levels. The use of a memory during screening significantly reduced the level of radiation measured (P less than 0.05). Recommendations are made for reducing radiation exposure by the surgeon, and a method is described to measure the irradiation of surgeons' hands.

A radiopharmacological study without human radiation exposure.

The development, study and control of new drugs today is hardly conceivable without nuclear medicine studies. Nuclear physicians on ethical commissions bear great responsibility in the planning and execution of such studies. In order to protect subjects and patients those nuclear techniques are therefore to be welcome which do not include exposure to radiation. Nuclear techniques used in in-vitro diagnostics (RIA) and the determination of naturally occurring nuclides incorporated in the human body belong to this category. With the aid of a clinico-pharmacological study of a new combination of

Nuking the radiation: minimizing radiation exposure in the evaluation of pediatric blunt trauma.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Our objective is to highlight recent literature investigating low-radiation diagnostic strategies in the evaluation of pediatric trauma. RECENT FINDINGS: In the area of minor head injury, research has focused on implementation of validated clinical decision rules into practice to reduce unnecessary computed tomography scans. Clinical observation may also serve as an adjunct to initial assessment and a potential substitute for computed tomography imaging. Subgroups of children with special needs or severe injury mechanisms may also be safely characterized by the clinical dec

Radiation in the workplace-a review of studies of the risks of occupational exposure to ionising radiation.

Many individuals are, or have been, exposed to ionising radiation in the course of their work and the epidemiological study of occupationally irradiated groups offers an important opportunity to complement the estimates of risks to health resulting from exposure to radiation that are obtained from other populations, such as the Japanese survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. Moreover, workplace exposure to radiation usually involves irradiation conditions that are of direct relevance to the principal concern of radiological protection: protracted exposure to low le

Possibilities to estimate the personal UV radiation exposure from ambient UV radiation measurements.

People are exposed to solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) throughout their entire lives. Exposure to UVR is vital but also poses serious risks. The quantification of human UVR exposure is a complex issue. Personal UVR exposure is related to ambient UVR as well as to a variety of factors such as the orientation of the exposed anatomical site with respect to the sun and the duration of exposure. This is mainly determined by personal behaviour. A variety of efforts have been made in the past to measure or model the personal UVR exposure of people and often personal UVR exposure has been expressed a

Comprehensive Radiation Shield Minimizes Operator Radiation Exposure and Obviates Need for Lead Aprons.

BACKGROUND: The catheterization laboratory predisposes to occupational health hazards. Chronic radiation exposure (RE) direct injuries include a predilection to cataracts and concerns for cancers. Indirectly adverse effects underly the prevalence of orthopedic maladies in interventionists, linked to the burden of mandatory protective lead aprons. A novel comprehensive shielding system (Protego, Image Diagnostics Inc) has been validated in early studies to provide excellent radiation protection. The system is designed to reduce operator RE sufficient to eliminate the need for personal lead apro
