Protection from radiation enteritis by an absorbable polyglycolic acid mesh sling.

Patients with malignant tumors of the pelvis who cannot be cured surgically often are treated with radiation after surgery. A devastating side effect of this treatment is radiation-associated small bowel injury (RASBI). The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that removal of the small bowel from the radiation field would protect it against RASBI. Twenty cebus monkeys underwent low anterior resection. In 10 animals an absorbable polyglycolic acid (PGA) mesh was sewn circumferentially around the interior of the abdominal cavity as a supporting apron, which prevented the small bowel'

Molecular insights and translational potential of ferulic acid in radiation protection.

Ferulic acid, a common dietary phenolic abundant in plant cell walls, has been identified as a potential drug candidate with radiation-protective effects in experimental models. This review summarizes new developments regarding the molecular mechanisms, experimental models and translational potential of ferulic acid-induced radioprotection. Mechanistically, ferulic acid attenuates ionizing radiation-induced damage by scavenging free radicals, inhibiting lipid peroxidation, maintaining mitochondrial fitness, modulating inflammation signaling pathways and upregulating endogenous antioxidant syst

Implementing Patient Protection Radiation Dose Alerts for Pediatric Cardiac Catheterization Examinations.

BACKGROUND: Advancements in cardiac catheterization have improved survival for pediatric congenital heart disease patients, but the associated ionizing radiation risks necessitate ethical consideration. METHODS: This study presents an empirical model, developed from 3131 unique pediatric procedures, to establish alert levels based on a patient's lateral thickness of the thorax for various procedural categories during diagnostic or interventional cardiac catheterization. The model uses linear regression of logarithmic reference air kinetic energy released per unit mass (KERMA) and air KERMA ar

Ultraviolet Radiation Exposure, Risk, and Protection in Military and Outdoor Athletes.

Overexposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from the sun is associated with deleterious health effects including, but not limited to, increased risk of skin cancers. Military personnel and those who participate in outdoor exercise or sports represent two potential populations at elevated risk of negative health consequences of UVR exposure due to large amounts of time spent outdoors, often in harsh UVR environments. Despite exposure to high and/or frequent doses of UVR in recreational and tactical athletes, adequate sun-protection practices are often disregarded or not well understood by many

A universal radiation protection system based on individual standardised integrated doses.

A 'Universal Radiation Protection System' (URPS) is proposed in this paper with a novel philosophy, concept and methodology. It applies a 'Standardised Integrated Dose System' (SIDS) based on health risk limits for workers and public, no matter where they live in the world. The URPS assigns equal radiation health risk limit to an individual by integrating doses from national natural background (NBG) radiation and from man-made sources. For public, the SIDS integrates doses from planned exposure situations within a dose limit (e.g. 1 mSv y(-1)) on top of the mean national NBG dose in a country.

Exercise-induced protection of bone marrow cells following exposure to radiation.

The hormetic effects of exercise training have previously been shown to enhance cellular protection against oxidative stress. Therefore, adaptations to exercise training may attenuate the harmful effects of radiation induced by oxidative stress. Flow cytometric analysis of genotoxicity (γH2AX foci and micronucleated reticulocytes (MN-RET)) and cytotoxicity (apoptosis and percentage of reticulocytes) were conducted on bone marrow cells isolated from acutely exercised (Acute EX), exercise-trained (EX), and sedentary (SED) mice following 1 and 2 Gy radiation challenges in vitro. Acute EX increase

Protection of UV-radiation induced skin toxicity by reactive oxygen scavengers.

Although, photoaddition reactions of psoralens with DNA and membrane lipid are regarded as the major photochemical events responsible for skin-photosensitization and photochemotherapeutic properties, their O2-dependent reactive oxygen specie (ROS) generating potential is also responsible for biologic photooxidation reactions and cutaneous phototoxicity. We have investigated the skin-sensitization reactions of psoralen in presence of selected free radical scavengers. The results confirm that sodium azide, DABCO and beta-carotene inhibited considerably the 1O2 generation reactions in a chemical

Metallothionein induction as a potent means of radiation protection in mice.

A striking resistance to lethal damage from a single dose of 6-8 Gy of X rays has been found in mice which had received various pretreatments to induce metallothionein (MT) synthesis in the liver prior to irradiation. Mice were injected with manganese (10 mg Mn/kg) or cadmium (3 mg Cd/kg) salt subcutaneously, or a patch of dorsal skin (2 X 2 cm2) was excised 1 or 2 days prior to irradiation. The increased tolerance of these mice to radiation was established by a marked decrease of mortality rate, an increase of mean survival time, a reduction of weight loss, and a smaller decrease in the numbe

Comparison of a suspended radiation protection system versus standard lead apron for radiation exposure of a simulated interventionalist.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the radiation protective characteristics of a system designed to enhance operator protection while eliminating weight to the body and allowing freedom of motion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Radiation doses to a mock interventionalist were measured with calibrated dosimeters in a clinical interventional suite. A standard lead apron (SLA; Pb equivalent, 0.5 mm) was compared with a suspended radiation protection system (ZeroGravity; Zgrav) that shields from the top of the head to the calves (except the right arm and left forearm) with a complex overhead motion system that elimina

NCRP Report no.180-management of exposure to ionizing radiation: NCRP radiation protection guidance for the United States.

NCRP Report No. 180, 'Management of Exposure to Ionizing Radiation: Radiation Protection Guidance for the United States (2018)' was developed by Council Committee 1. The report builds and expands upon previous recommendations of NCRP and ICRP, covering exposure to radiation and radioactive materials for five exposure categories: occupational, public, medical, emergency workers, and nonhuman biota. Actions to add, increase, reduce or remove a source of exposure to humans require justification. Optimisation of protection universally applies, taking into account societal, economic, and environmen

From UV Protection to Protection in the Whole Spectral Range of the Solar Radiation: New Aspects of Sunscreen Development.

Sunscreens have been constantly improving in the past few years. Today, they provide an efficient protection not only in the UVB but also in the UVA spectral region of the solar radiation. Recently it could be demonstrated that 50% of all free radicals induced in the skin due to solar radiation are formed in the visible and infrared spectral region. The good protective efficacy of sunscreens in the UV region prompts people to stay much longer in the sun than if they had left their skin unprotected. However, as no protection in the visible and infrared spectral region is provided, high amounts

Radiation Protection Practices Among Medical Students at Two United Kingdom Medical Schools.

Background Orthopaedic surgery frequently involves the use of intraoperative fluoroscopy, exposing operating theatre personnel to ionising radiation. Medical students often attend orthopaedic procedures during their clinical training, yet their education on radiation safety and access to appropriate protective equipment remain poorly understood. This study aimed to evaluate radiation safety among medical students during surgical placements, focusing on educational exposure, practical radiation protection practices, and perceived safety. Methodology A multicentre, cross-sectional, questionnaire

Ovarian radiation injury and protection: Mechanisms, delivery-enabled interventions, and future directions.

Incidental ovarian irradiation during pelvic radiotherapy or total-body irradiation leads to irreversible endocrine dysfunction, premature ovarian insufficiency, and infertility in young women with cancer. Current clinical strategies-ovarian transposition, shielding, and organ-at-risk dose constraints-provide only partial protection and offer limited control over temporal exposure or spatial confinement. These limitations underscore the need for delivery-enabled radioprotective systems capable of targeting the ovary with precision, synchronizing protection with radiation fractions, and minimiz
