There is a concern over the potential use of radioactive isotopes as a weapon of terror. The detonation of a radiation dispersal device, the so-called "dirty bomb" can lead to public panic. A total of 72 patients with chronic gastroduodenitis having become victims of the Chernobyl accident were examined. Of these, 43 subjects exhibited surface gastroduodenitis (GD), 29 had erosive GD. In the studies made, the role has been ascertained of the duodenogastral reflux, allergization of the organism, and changes in the immune system in the pathogenesis of erosive-and-ulcerous lesions of the gastroduodenal portion of the digestive system.

Weinberg et al. (2001, Proc. R. Soc. Lond. Data are submitted from the published literature and the authors' investigations on the state of lipid peroxidation (LPO) and antioxidant defence (AOD) in liquidators of the effects of the Chernobyl accident and those working under watch rate. Both groups patients revealed activation of LPO and AOD processes. Long-continued activation of AOD can lead to its exhaustion and become a trigger factor in the development of cardiovascular diseases and digestive disorders.

To date, areas contaminated by radionuclides discharged from the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant accident have been mapped in detail. Inhalation therapy of diethylene-triamine-penta-acetate (DTPA) should be initiated immediately to workers who have significant incorporation of plutonium, americium or curium in the nuclear fuel reprocessing plant. A newly designed electric mesh nebulizer is a small battery-operated passive vibrating mesh device, in which vibrations in an ultrasonic horn are used to force drug solution through a mesh of micron-sized holes. This nebulizer enables DTPA administration at an early stage in the event of a radiation emergency from contamination from the above radioactive metals.
