Distal radius fractures are among the most common fractures of the upper extremity. Indications for operative and nonsurgical management have evolved over time, as have fixation techniques. Volar locking plates are commonly used in the treatment of selected distal radius fractures such as low-energy or relatively uncomplicated fractures. They have limitations, however, in the management of highly comminuted fracture patterns and in polytrauma patients. In these patients, other methods ranging from spanning fixation to fragment-specific fixation have emerged as useful alternatives in the surgeo

Treating a fracture of the distal radius may require the surgeon to make a difficult decision between surgical treatment and nonsurgical management. The use of surgical fixation has recently increased because of complications associated with conservative treatment. However, conservative action may be necessary depending on certain patient factors. The treating surgeon must be aware of the possible complications associated with distal radius fracture treatments to prevent their occurrence. Prevention can be achieved with a proper understanding of the mechanism of these complications. This artic

PURPOSE: To assess the rates and associated diagnoses of readmissions for patients having received an intervention for treatment of distal radius fracture.
METHODS: We analyzed patient discharges from 2005-2011 for California, Florida, and New York. We used Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality data sets: (1) State Inpatient Database, (2) State Ambulatory Surgery Database, and (3) State Emergency Department Database. We examined inpatient, outpatient, and emergency room treatment locations. We identified patients by diagnosis code for distal radius fracture (813.41). Patients were strati

OBJECTIVE: The exact prevalence of scapholunate dissociation (SLD) associated with distal radius fracture (DRF) and the effect of persistent SLD on the function of the wrist are not known. So, we examined the association between SLD and DRF and the effects of treatment on clinical outcomes.
METHODS: Eight hundred and twenty-nine patients with 839 DRF were included in the study. The radiographs of the patients were examined with special reference to SLD both in pre- and post-reduction period. Persistent SLD cases were evaluated by the scoring system of Green and O'Brien at least 2 years after

INTRODUCTION: In our local emergency departments (EDs), manipulation and reduction (M&R) of distal radius fractures are performed by emergency doctors, with blind manual palpation, using postreduction x-rays to assess adequacy. We sought to study the effectiveness of ultrasound guidance in the reduction of distal radius fractures in adult patients presenting to a regional ED.
METHODS: This was a before-and-after study. Eligible patients were adults older than 21 years who presented to the ED with distal radius fractures that required M&R. Sixty-two patients were prospectively enrolled from Oc

Distal radius fractures account for approximately 15% of all fractures in adults. Care of these fractures is associated with a myriad of complications. This review focuses on the soft tissue complications encountered during the management of distal radius fractures, including tendon injury, nerve dysfunction, vascular compromise, skin problems, compartment syndrome, complex regional pain syndrome, and ligament dysfunction. There are many vital soft tissue structures in close proximity to the osseous anatomy around the wrist, and the complications associated with the soft tissues may be more pr

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the proximal radius need to be classified in an appropriate and reproducible manner. The aim of this study was to assess the reliability of the three most widely used classification systems.
METHODS: Elbow radiographs images of patients with proximal radius fractures were classified according to Mason, Morrey, and Arbeitsgemeinschaft für osteosynthesefragen/Association for the Study of Internal Fixation (AO/ASIF) classifications by four observers with different experience with this subject to assess their intra- and inter-observer agreement. Each observer analyzed the

UNLABELLED: Internal fixation by pinning is one of the most used methods of surgical treatment in fractures of the distal extremity of the radius. As in stable fractures a styloid pinning is satisfactory, in unstable fractures however we must resort to different patterns of pin insertion, in order to effectively prevent the secondary displacement of the fractured fragments. The elastic pinning described by Py and Desmanet is one of the possibilities of inserting the pins. The principle of this method is to use the bending-induced tension in the pins to counteract the postero-lateral displacing

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to review, over a fixed period of time and in a geographically defined area, all paediatric fractures of the distal radius that were initially reduced. We wished to assess the fracture pattern at different ages, the seasonal variation, the severity of the initial angulation, and the radiological outcome in terms of reangulation, remodelling, refracture, growth disturbance, and functional outcome.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 88 patients were followed in a prospective setting (11 fractures of the distal radial physis). The pre- and post-reductio

There are myriad factors that affect patient satisfaction following a distal radius fracture, including anatomic alignment, age, motion, pain, and hand dominance to name a few. The seeming contradictions in the literature serve to illustrate that individual outcomes are not entirely predict-able because of the different functional demands, expectations, and pain tolerance for each patient. Elderly populations may tolerate greater degrees of residual deformity because of a more sedentary lifestyle. Unrecognized intracarpal pathology may account for poor results despite acceptable radiographic ali

External fixation in fractures of the distal radius has been used for almost 80 years. The main objective is to achieve reduction and maintain the reduction throughout treatment. The fixator concept described as the dynamic fixator allows reduction in three planes and allows for the wrist to move after a period of rigid fixation. Fixator application is illustrated for fractures that necessitate bridging of the wrist joint and for extra-articular fractures. Indications for additional measures, including bone grafting, k-wire fixation, and stabilization of the radioulnar joint, are discussed. As

Distal radius fractures require precise medical treatment, therapeutic intervention during fracture immobilization, and specialized rehabilitation thereafter to ensure an optimal functional result. With an understanding of the mechanics of distal radius fractures, surgical intervention, and bone healing, the therapist can modify the therapy program according to the patient's individual needs. The therapeutic process is begun in the crucial stage of bone healing during fracture immobilization. By addressing edema reduction and early range of motion of the uninvolved joints, most problems can be

The author has described one of the typical combinations of injuries in the elbow joint area in children, i.e. fractures of the neck of the radius with a simultaneous fracture of the ulna. The study is based on 37 cases observed by the author. Two types of the above-mentioned fractures have been distinguished: abduction (32) and extension (5) fractures. The methods of closed reposition of each type have been presented. These methods allow to reach the desired results even in major dislocations (60-90 degrees) of the head of the radius.

BACKGROUND: Although distal radius fractures (DRFs) are clinically common, intra-articular DRFs accompanied by dorsally displaced free fragments are much less so. At present, it is very difficult to fix and stabilize the intra-articular distal radius fractures accompanying dorsally displaced free fragments with a plate. Our aim was to investigate the clinical effect of DRFs with distally displaced dorsal free mass treated with distal volaris radius (DVR) combined with turning of the radius via the distal palmar approach.
METHODS: From 2015 to 2019, 25 patients with intra-articular distal radi

A 70-year-old woman incurred a stress fracture of the radius following a fracture of the ulna. The patient had osteomalacia secondary to a Billroth II procedure. The primary reasons for the development of osteomalacia following a Billroth II procedure are: decreased transit time through the gut, which causes less Vitamin D and calcium absorption, and bypassing of the duodenum, where calcium absorption is highest. After treatment of the osteomalacia with calcium and Vitamin D, the fracture healed uneventfully. The present case report emphasizes the need to identify and treat diseases associated

Distal radius fractures are one of the most prevalent fracture types. Dorsal tilt of the articular surface of the distal radius as assessed on the lateral radiograph is often used in determining the correct treatment method. This report seeks to highlight the importance of correct forearm positioning when obtaining distal radius radiographs, and the effects of pronation and supination on dorsal tilt measurements of the radius. It presents a case of a 35-year-old male with a malaligned left-sided distal radius fracture sustained during a sports-related fall.
